Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments for task 10 with a large door on the cover, will you accept elevator doors? The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead

message 3: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Dec 15, 2022 12:43PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I'm going to say no, because that will open the door to other possibilities - car door, train door. I was thinking like this:
All This I Will Give to You by Dolores Redondo .

message 4: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2562 comments was worth a try. I can't find a way to use that book. can't win 'em all...

message 5: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I briefly looked at your book and I don't see where it would fit either. You might sneak it in, "just because".

message 6: by Gunit Kaur (new)

Gunit Kaur Kalada | 407 comments The link (http://bhort.bh.cornell.edu/tree/list...) in task 4 doesn't open for me. Does it open for anyone else?

message 7: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments It works for me. If you can't get it to work, try googling Cornell University Tree List, and see if you can find it that way.

message 8: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19323 comments It works for me, Gunit. Oddly, even the link you pasted above brings me to the page.

message 9: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The link Gunit pasted does not work on my iPod either. The little connection symbol keeps spinning. I tried it in the long list too. Nope.

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Cherie wrote: "The link Gunit pasted does not work on my iPod either. The little connection symbol keeps spinning. I tried it in the long list too. Nope."

That makes me suspect even more that it's that you're trying to access the links from your iPod, and it no likey.

message 11: by Gunit Kaur (new)

Gunit Kaur Kalada | 407 comments I was trying to access it from my laptop. But weirdly, its working now. Maybe the site was just temporarily down or something.

message 12: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I'm glad it worked for you, Gunit.

message 13: by Ariane (new)

Ariane | 947 comments Hi Janice, already here with a question.
For the door on the cover, could this work?
Les dix mille portes de January by Alix E. Harrow

message 14: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I'm afraid not - the task calls for a large door and it needs to be the focus.

message 15: by Ariane (new)

Ariane | 947 comments Janice wrote: "I'm afraid not - the task calls for a large door and it needs to be the focus."

I get it, thank you!

message 16: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4500 comments will this work for door?
By Their Cold Fingers by Timothy Bryan

message 17: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4500 comments Nevermind that last one, I think I found a better one - as long as the door can be open?
The Stroke of Winter by Wendy Webb

message 18: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Fingers wouldn't work - not Large Door that is the focus of the cover, but Stroke will work.

message 19: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1519 comments Would Murder at Ardith Hall (A Redmond and Haze Mystery Book 6) by Irina Shapiro be acceptable for the task:
10. Read a book with a large door on the cover.

Thanks.

message 20: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think that's a gate, not a door . There's a task about a gate on the cover somewhere too.

message 22: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1519 comments Need help with the task:
Read a book where the main character sets forth on a major journey.

Would fantasy genre be allowed for this? Or books like 1. The Celtic Quest (Harry Fox Book 3) by Andrew Clawson 2. The Magdalene Veil (The Magdalene Chronicles #3) by Gary McAvoy and similar books dealing with quests or search ancient secrets (sort of archeological thrillers) work for this?

Thanks.

message 23: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I didn't look at your books, but please review the rules. Genres are discussed, and there were no exceptions for this task.

Viji | 1519 comments Task:
Read a book about the environment

Would Ascent into Hell by Fergus White Ascent into Hell work for this task?

Thanks.

message 26: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments No, I don't think so. It's more about mountaineering - the quest to get to the top . If the book was a discussion of the environmental impact of the climbing (leaving oxygen bottles and dead bodies) , that would be considered "environmental:.

message 27: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1812 comments For about the environment, would Virgin Earth work? It looks like it's about a gardener who becomes a botanist in the New World.

message 28: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments It sounds like it might work.

Margo | 11668 comments Amanda wrote: "For about the environment, would Virgin Earth work? It looks like it's about a gardener who becomes a botanist in the New World."

Well you've done me a favour Amanda - I own Earthly Joys on audible and I didn't have it marked on GR!!! If your message hadn't prompted me to check audible for book 2 I might never have it. No that's a symptom of owning too many audio books LOL

Viji | 1519 comments Task: Read a book about the environment.

I found that I have A Blizzard of Polar Bears: A Novel of Suspense. Currently, it has MPG - Environment > Nature, which is at the bottom of the list. Will it work for the environment task?

Thanks.

message 32: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Sounds like it would.

message 33: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1519 comments Janice wrote: "Sounds like it would."

Thanks, Janice. Do I need a verification for this?

message 34: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments "It sounds like it would" is not an approval or verification. It's one of those books that you'll have to read to find out. We work on the honour system, and it you read it and find it works, great. If in reading it, you find it doesn't, then the expectation is that you not claim it and find another book.

message 35: by Viji (new)

Viji | 1519 comments Task: Read a book with the name of a tree in the title from this site - http://bhort.bh.cornell.edu/tree/list....

Should the title relate to an actual tree or it could be something like
The Mysteries of Hawthorn Hall? Hawthorn is in the prescribed list. But the 'Hawthorn' in this title is part of a building name. Would it be acceptable for this task?

Thanks.

message 36: by Janice, Moderator (new)

i don't how you managed to translate that Janice I didn't notice that my words had got garbled but thank you for quick response

message 42: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Hi Janice,

Task 5, Read a book where someone is protecting someone else. I have a book that fits, but to explain why, I'll need to spoil it. Can I use spoiler tags in my recording post for that, or should I find something else?

message 43: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments I think it will be fine if you use spoiler tags.

message 44: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 09, 2023 07:10AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19221 comments Checking in re: the task "Read a book where the main character sets forth on a major journey."

I am reading a book at the moment where there are multiple (4) main characters who are all taking significant journeys - eg. One moving to the USA to study a PhD, one going to the Middle East to fight, three other spoilers. So not one big one, but multiple important plot points.

Would that meet your requirement for this task? I think so but as I have had to move this book twice already, thought I better double check :D

message 45: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60073 comments Yes, go ahead Rusalka.

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments I'm struggling to find a book for the someone protecting someone else task. Does anyone have suggestions to narrow down my search? Maybe I should look for a thriller with someone guarding a witness or something?

message 48: by Katrisa (last edited Jan 17, 2023 04:39PM) (new)

Katrisa | 4500 comments Laura have you read A Gentleman in Moscow? He protects a little girl in that book

message 49: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4500 comments I also just read The Last Thing to Burn which would also fit for the protection task. Various characters end up protecting various characters

message 50: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Jan 17, 2023 05:45PM) (new)

Kristie | 19323 comments The Island is about a woman protecting her stepchildren. The Neighborhood is a man trying to protect his neighborhood from invaders. I think there are often people being protected in the Orphan X series.

Edit - I feel like there are a lot of books where people protect other people, particularly children. Maybe a WWII book? Something like 50 Children: One Ordinary American Couple's Extraordinary Rescue Mission into the Heart of Nazi Germany or Irena's Children: The Extraordinary Story of the Woman Who Saved 2,500 Children from the Warsaw Ghetto?
