It was a book that had little lift flaps where you thought the mouse was hiding but they were just random household objects that looked like a mouses tail. I first read this to my daughter in 2000 .

Could it have been Cat in a Flap by Shoo Rayner? The book was originally published in 1992 and features flaps that lift up.
