Umm okay, hi everyone. This is my first time doing this so bare with me. I enjoyed this book and it’s mystery. It was interesting to see the characters each become suspicious of each other. Not much trust in that group of strangers. Even as they grew closer to each other they couldn’t help but wonder if that person could be the killer.
I also found the PTSD character interesting. She was really her own worst enemy and her own fear is what eventually led to her downfall. It was a pointless death and one the character should have known better.
Which scene stood out to you the most?
Who did you think the killer was?
Which characters did you like the least/most.
Do you think a love story would really begin in a place like that?
How did the snowstorm add to the suspense of the story? Besides trapping the guests so they literally had no where to run to.
I suspected everyone at some point. Lol.
Pam wrote: "I just finished listening and did not guess the murderer ... not even close!"Same! And to think I was getting a bit bored with this book in some parts. WOW!
I had fun with this one. It reminded me of some of Agatha Christie’s classic isolation mysteries. I don’t ever seem to be able to figure out the murderer in these books. Not sure if that’s a reflection of my intellect 😜, but that’s part of the thrill for me. Heather, thanks for leading our discussions. I may answer some of your great questions on the “with spoilers” thread, since the answers may involve character and plot details.
just finished it today! I did suspect who it was, but only during the last chapters. I didn't see that last twist coming though!
Just started this the other day. Lots of firsts for me with this one. First group read and first time reading this author.... So far so good
Just finished and really liked it. It kept me guessing right to the end, with a surprising twist. I look forward to reading more from her.
I read this book in the past but forgot who the murderer was so had to gleefully read again and realized why I had forgotten, such a twist! Loved this book very much.
Shari Lapena seldom disappoints and this one is a definite page turner. There are several POV shifts throughout each chapter, so if that's something you dislike, this isn't the book for you. I love that when it's done well, and in my opinion, Lapena has excelled at it.Of course, it's not a unique premise -- guests stuck at a hotel in an ice storm, someone or someones get murdered -- Ruth Ware's excellent One by One comes to mind -- and Agatha Christie was the master of this sort of thing -- but still, none of that took away from my enjoyment of the book.
If I have a quibble it's that there is no way as a reader I could have guessed whodunit...the clues simply weren't there, or if they were, I missed them. That said, I was satisfied with the ending.
Fast-paced and an easy read.
I hadn't until recently discovered Shari Lapena but I'm really enjoying her books. An Unwanted Guest involves a group of guests stranded in a luxury hotel one weekend, something dreams are made of, but this weekend turns into a nightmare. No phone reception, internet and then no power. no way out and no way to summon help. There is a murder amongst them!
I really enjoyed this book. I like books with this type of ambience: snow, winter, in the middle of nowhere. It reminded me of Agatha Christie too. It's funny how I suspected almost everyone except the murderer. It was a nice twist.
Finished it last week, and really enjoyed it. I haven't read a classic mystery like this in a while. Here is my full spoiler-free review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'm about halfway done with this one. it is interesting, and it reminds me so much of how Aatha Christie plots hr novel. so far my theory on who is the murdered hasn't changed, but now that the second guest has been murdered, I am not so confident in who I thought it was. I'm excited to so how it ends
