Looks like Hulu is starting to get in the game. Another series starting soon. I read the book a long time ago, but the series really looks good and I will be sure to tune in.
Right now you can get Hulu for $1.99 a month for a year, but you have to act quick. It is an extended Black Friday sale - no telling when it will drop off.

Great book. Sorry we don't have Hulu.
Watched the first episode of Kindred today on Hulu. Both main actors new to me. I read the book years ago, so barely remember much about it other than the major premise. Will watch more of it. All the first season episodes are available right now. Think there was 8 of them.
Plan to watch the rest of this series this coming week. Hope others are interested too. Shout out if you are watching...
Just found out about this series (loved the book) and going on a weeks vacation (RV) but will check it out when we're back home.
Well, we did have good wifi so could use our ?Roku thing. I watched the first 3 episodes and haven't decided whether to continue or not. Not loving it tbh. I loved the book. I don't care for the changes made and am not feeling the characters so far enough to stay in that dark dark world with them for long.
Oh Bonnie sorry about that. I have only heard good things about this one. It has been too long ago that I read the book so doubt I would notice any big changes to the series. I have been too busy to watch it yet, but it is on my list to watch really soon.

Plus, to be honest, I'm a wuss about anything really graphic (torture/abuse/rape/pain) on the screen more than reading. Even shows/movies I do love (like Outlander/Last of the Mohicans/Game of Thrones) I tend to FF stuff I don't want taking a visual hold in my head.

That's ONE huge reason why they want to keep it out of the school systems, to NOT acknowledge the past, will soon repeat, we see it already. If you seen ROOTS, then you'll be fine, because KINDRED is a less painful series.....

I actually did read and watch a lot more when I was young about wars/mistreatment of women/genocides/slavery than I want to now. I think it's because I do already know the history. I totally think true history should be taught to children (but in a fair and age appropriate way.)
Because my ancestor was raped and sold from Mali to Brazil, I want the entire country to know what happened to my people. Its easy to read about it, but to live knowing that someone was raped by a slave owner and here I am is a different feeling. Its sad that we drill the Jewish Holocaust in the school system, its a shame when the school system wants to sugar coat what really started this racism in this country.
There are so many horrid things in our history. I don't think it is so much people try to ignore or coverup what has happened, it is just the overwhelming amount of things from the past. Not only is slavery abhorrent, but the massacre of Native Americans, the internment of Americans of Japanese decent, the Holocaust and murder of those of the Jewish faith. Down thru history there have been many instances of one people against another.
All the things you just mentioned was all done by Caucasian folks. Not 1 war was started by the ones you mentioned....It saddens me when someone brings up slavery, and then you throw all the others. None of these groups that you mentioned went thru half of what Africans went thru, not 1. That's a cover up when someone mentioned one thing, then folks pop up with others. Funny how you said all these others, and they all got reparations, haha, and black folks talk about reparations, and all hell breaks out. School systems want everything BUT what needs to be discussed....

White people have not stood up together to condemn and sincerely apologize for the enslavement of Africans, convict leasing, the end of Reconstruction, Jim Crow, etc., and for how the effects of these continue to oppress African Americans even today. I believe both white supremacy and deep white shame keep us from truly acknowledging our history. And when reparations are mentioned, as Stephanie said, despite that fact that bills have been introduced in Congress after Congress, it is always a nonstarter.
Octavia Butler is one of my favorite authors and Kindred is an amazing book. But I need to watch it as well as read about it, because it's too easy to divert my mind away from the true horrors of enslavement when I'm reading. We don't have the streaming service so I have not yet watched Kindred, but I hope to soon.
