Bill | 465 comments The World of Normal Boys by K.M. Soehnlein has been on my "To Read" shelf far too long. Maybe it's because the plot is about a North Jersey boy in the 70s struggling with doubts about himself is too close to my own story.

Hannah Simone | 1 comments Blood Sanctuary Pt. 2 by Vela Roth
It is a fantasy romance series. If you've ever read the From Blood and Ash series it has a similar structure to that without the bits that make it insufferable. It's cozy and beautifully written with several of the main characters being in queer relationships (rare for the genre).

The whole series is on Kindle Unlimited, beginning with Blood Solace. It's so good! The author isn't well known but deserves far more credit than some front runners in the genre.

message 3: by Greg (new)

Greg Just finished Fully Empowered by Pablo Neruda, and re-reading it almost a couple decades later, it's still my favorite of the five or six of Neruda's books that I've read so far. I can see why it was a personal favorite of his, and the translation by Alastair Reid is wonderful! It holds up much better than his The Yellow Heart that I re-read earlier in November.

Also finished Rabeah Ghaffari's extraordinary tale set in the times of Iran's 1979 revoluation, To Keep the Sun Alive. And I finished Foundation and Empire, a fun light read.

Now, I'm reading The Blithedale Romance by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I'm only 6 chapters in, but I've somewhat pleasantly surprised. I was worried it would be only a philosophical allegory with characters serving as props to demonstrate ideas and that it would bore me slightly . . . but Hawthorne's writing has kept me well engaged, at least so far. I'm enjoying the symbolic, metaphoric and suggestive language and images.

I'll probably also pick up The Night Tiger and/or Nutcracker and Mouse King and the Tale of the Nutcracker soon.

I watched the Netflix adaption of that one - it was interesting. Maybe I'll read it someday. I've read other books by Bardugo but not that one yet. The ones I did read were fun. Enjoy!

Sarah-Hope | 56 comments I loved, loved, loved When the Angels left the Old Country, the story of a small demon and an angel who have been studying torah in a shtetl for centuries and decide they must travel to America to rescue a girl from that shtetl who immigrated to America and hasn't been heard from since. This story is heartwarming in a delightfully non-cloying way.

Sarah-Hope | 56 comments Erin Kelly's The Skeleton Key by Erin Kelly The Skeleton Key is one of those books that can quite rightly be called "addictive." It's a sophisticated mystery/thriller with a disturbing book and two disturbed families at its center. Whatever your taste in books, this is a title you'll have a hard time putting down once you've begun it.

The queer characters are secondary, but they're there.

Would love some queer story recommendations 👍🏼

message 32: by Will (new)

Will Allison | 3 comments Currently reading Game Changer by Rachel Reid.

message 33: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (sfraneta) | 2 comments I want to recommend the graphic nonfiction book Other Russias by Victoria Lomasko. It's really an incredible book about activism in Russia, protests against Putin, Pussy Riot and other LGBTQ activism. The drawings are by Victoria and there is not very much text but there is commentary and every drawing has a balloon, all expertly translated by Thomas Campbell, a great book about an unknown (for the most part) Russia.

message 34: by Sarah-Hope (new)

Sarah-Hope | 56 comments Before All the World by Moriel Rothman-Zecher Before All the World is a book that makes demands on the reader, but pays that effort back with its rich plot, its profound reflection, and its utterly original language. It has a remarkable pair of gay men: Leyb, the survivor of a pogrom; Charles, a Black, Yiddish-speaking, Philadelphia Communist

Bill | 465 comments Ending the year by reading Peter's Chair by John Simpson. It's about an American cardinal who happens to be gay, and finds himself elected Pope. As he goes about trying to modernize the Church a group of conservative clergy invite Satan himself into the Vatican.
