K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Happy New Year, everyone!

I am so excited to be climbing Mount Olympus!

To help me keep track of my climb, I thought that I would post a once-a-week progress report each Sunday (most likely in the evening) to let you all know how I’m doing. In addition to this, I will also be updating my “Finished Reading” list as I complete books from my TBR.

I decided to start the year by diving into my stack of unread manga, beginning with the most recent volumes of my ongoing series. I have close to 60 volumes of manga on this year’s TBR list, and I’m really looking forward to reading them all. I also began reading my first nonfiction book of the new year.

I was able to spend the majority of the day reading, so I have already made a decent amount of progress on my climb.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals...

📚Physical TBR: 4/634
📱Ebook TBR: 0/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 0/13
Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 4/150+

~That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime Vol. 20 — I am continuing to enjoy this series very much. I’d love to have a chance to see the anime adaptation at some point as well. 📚:⭐⭐⭐⭐

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good evening, everyone! Happy Sunday!

It has been a super busy week, but I’ve still managed to make time for reading.

This week I decided to focus on reading some of the newer titles on my TBR, so most of the books I finished this week were either Christmas gifts, or books that I bought with gift cards right after the holiday. I really wanted to make these books a priority early in the year, and I’m glad that I did.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

~Alice in Borderland, Vol. 2 — 📚: ⭐⭐⭐
~Alice in Borderland, Vol. 3 — 📚: ⭐⭐⭐
~Alice in Borderland, Vol. 4 — This was the last volume that is currently available in English, so I’ll be taking a break from this manga until the next book is released.📚: ⭐⭐⭐

~Lore Olympus: Volume Three — I’m really looking forward to the release of the next book in this series later this year! 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

~Barbarian Alien — This is the second book in the Ice Planet Barbarians series. It’s been really good so far. 📚

During the coming week, I am planning to start reading some of the books that I purchased after the first of the year. I will be continuing to read books from my TBR list as well, but I probably will not finish quite as many TBR titles as I did this week.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

This week’s update is being posted a little ahead of schedule, but since I had some free time this morning, I thought I’d go ahead and share my progress for the week…

Most of my free time this week was spent reading the Bridgerton series, by Julia Quinn. I got so hooked on the Netflix adaptation at the beginning of the year that I decided to read the original books, and I am absolutely loving them. I ended up reading the first six books in the series this week (I’m currently on the seventh), and all of them were five-star reads. I did purchase them after the first of the year, however, so they won’t be counted toward my TBR total.

Even though I’ve been almost exclusively focused on the Bridgerton series, I did manage to finish a couple of books from my TBR list. I’m also continuing to read the true crime book I started last week.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 24/634
📱Ebook TBR: 3/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 0/13
Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 27/150+

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~Night of the Cupid — This is the seventh book in the Doyle Cozy Mystery series. It was a great continuation of the series, set around/on Valentine’s Day. 📱: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~Barbarian Alien — I really enjoyed the second book in the Ice Planet Barbarians romance series. It was a fun read. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~Crazy Scottish Love — This was a cute romance. I will probably read the sequel sometime in the next few weeks. 📱: ⭐⭐⭐

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
None

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
None

DNFed:
None

Currently Reading:
~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — I’m only a couple of chapters into this book, but it has been interesting so far. 📚
~Robinson Crusoe — I’m not overly impressed with this book, but I am going to finish it.📱

During the upcoming week, I am planning to continue the books from my TBR that I am currently reading, along with the Bridgerton series. I should be able to finish Robinson Crusoe this week, but H.H. Holmes will probably take me a while longer.

I am also planning to start reading the Ouran High School Host Club manga, which I bought shortly before the end of last year. I watched the anime adaptation years ago and really enjoyed it, so I’m certain I will enjoy the manga as well.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good afternoon, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I’ve been sick since Thursday morning, so it’s been kind of a lousy week for me personally. It has been a good week for reading though…

I spent the first part of this week finishing the remaining books in the Bridgerton series, and I absolutely loved them! I will definitely be re-reading the series in the future.

I also managed to make some more progress on my climb up Mount Olympus this week. I ended up taking a little break from H.H. Homes (because I just wasn’t in the mood for true crime), but I had a chance to finish reading a decent amount of manga, as well as a couple of classics, and a romance.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 37/634
📱Ebook TBR: 5/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 0/13
Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 42/150+

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~Robinson Crusoe — I was not impressed with this book. Apparently there is a sequel, which I discovered at the end of the story, but I have no interest in reading it. 📱: ⭐⭐
~Treasure Island — While I did read this book as a child, I really enjoyed having a chance to read this adventure again as an adult. 📱: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~Barbarian Lover — This is the third book in the Ice Planet Barbarians series. It was a great continuation of the series. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
None

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
~Ouran High School Host Club, Vol. 1 — I am really enjoying this series so far. It’s a lot of fun! (I also started re-watching the anime on Netflix, which has been great.) 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

DNFed:

Currently Reading:
~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — I took a short break from H.H. Holmes this week, but should be getting back to it soon. 📚
~Big Shot — I’m enjoying this cozy mystery so far. 📱
~The Murder of Roger Ackroyd — I’ve read this mystery before, so I’m already familiar with the story, but I’m really enjoying Richard Armitage’s narration. He does different voices for all of the characters. 🎧

This week I plan to finish reading the Ouran High School Host Club manga. I will either begin reading the Demon Slayer manga next, or I will get caught up on my FoxTrot comics. I am also planning to start reading The Count of Monte Cristo, which is one of the longest books on my TBR this year.

I will also be continuing to read the books I have bought since the beginning of 2023. So far I’ve managed to read nearly three-quarters of the titles on my “new books” list, and intend to get completely caught up before I purchase any more books this year.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good evening, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I am so done with being sick. It’s been over a week, and while I am feeling better, I’m still having a lot of trouble with my sinuses. Fortunately I don't get sick very often, but when I do...I get taken down hard.

This week I focused pretty exclusively on reading manga and comic collections, but I did manage to finish a couple of mystery novels from my TBR, as well as a few titles from my New Books list.

My big news of the week is that I’ve managed to pass the one-third mark on my Mount Olympus climb!

I’m really pleased with my TBR progress thus far, especially since we’re just now nearing the end of January.

~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — I did get back into this book this week. It is definitely a slow read though. 📚
~Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other — I currently have about 4 hours remaining in this book, and I’m really enjoying listening to it. The narration is done by the authors, and it is brilliant. It’s really making me look forward to the next season of Men in Kilts. 🎧

Next week I am planning to finish reading the FoxTrot comic series, and will also be starting The Count of Monte Cristo (which I had originally planned to start this week and just didn’t get to). I will also be continuing to read the last couple of books on my New Books list, and may start another audiobook (if time allows).

Starting on Wednesday, I will also be participating in Seasons of Reading’s Winter’s Respite readathon, which takes place during the month of February. I am planning to focus primarily on fantasy novels during this readathon, beginning with Legends & Lattes.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I had some free time this morning, so I thought that instead of waiting until this evening, I’d go ahead and post this week’s update.

We’re just over a month into the Mount TBR Challenge, and I am so excited to announce that I have officially managed to pass the halfway point on my Mount Olympus Climb!

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 70/634
📱Ebook TBR: 6/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 3/13
Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 79/150+

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~Death of a Cad — This is the second book in the Hamish Macbeth mystery series. It was a great mystery and a very fast read. I’m looking forward to reading more of this series next month when I participate in March Mystery Madness. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~Legends & Lattes — I ended up reading this book in a single morning and absolutely loved it! If you’re looking for a great cozy fantasy to read, then I highly recommend this one. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
~The Hobbit, or There and Back Again — I love this story so much, and have ever since I first read it as a kid! Andy Serkis is an awesome narrator. 🎧: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
~Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other— This was such a great audiobook! I loved the fact that it was narrated by the authors. 🎧: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Currently Reading:
~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — I am slowly continuing to make progress on this book. I’m finding it interesting, but it’s not high on my list of priorities right now. 📚
~The Count of Monte Cristo — I’m really not far enough into this book to have formed any opinions, but I will say that it is one big book. 📚

Next week I will be finishing the Arc of a Scythe series (from my New Books list) and then turning my attention to some of the sequels and standalone fantasy novels on my TBR. I’m either going to start with A Mirror Mended, by Alix E. Harrow, or Nettle & Bone, by T. Kingfisher.

I will also be continuing to read H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil, as well as The Count of Monte Cristo.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good afternoon, everyone! Happy Sunday!

It has been a pretty good week for reading! This week I was able to finish the Arc of a Scythe series (from my New Books list), as well as a few titles from this year’s TBR.

My pace on this challenge has slowed down somewhat, but I’m still feeling really good about my overall progress.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 73/634
📱Ebook TBR: 6/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 4/13
Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 83/150+

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~A Mirror Mended — I really enjoyed this sequel to A Spindle Splintered! 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
~Nettle & Bone — I thought this was a really interesting book. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~The Wishing Spell — The first book in The Land of Stories series was a really fun read. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~Robin Hood: The Complete Series 1 — The title of this audiobook is somewhat misleading, since it only includes the first four novelized episodes of the BBC’s Robin Hood series, but I still really enjoyed it! 🎧: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
None

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
None

DNFed:

Currently Reading:
~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — I only read a couple pages of this book during the week. It’s just not a priority right now. 📚
~The Count of Monte Cristo — I’ve actually made a significant amount of progress on this book throughout the week. I’ve been reading three chapters each night before bed, and I’m really enjoying the story. 📚
~The Enchantress Returns — This is the second book in The Land of Stories series. I’m enjoying it just as much as the first one. 📚

My main reading goal for next week is to continue the books I am currently reading. Including the book I am on right now, I have five books remaining in The Land of Stories series, and I’m hoping to be able to finish them before my next update. I should also be able to make a significant amount of progress on The Count of Monte Cristo.

Once I’ve finished The Land of Stories, I would like to spend some time reading James Rollins’ newest book, The Cradle of Ice. I would also like to start reading the Demon Slayer manga series, if time allows.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good evening, everyone! Happy Sunday!

Up until Friday morning, it was a pretty decent week. Unfortunately, while going out into my garage to take out the trash, I fell down the garage steps and fractured my ankle. I’m currently in a splint, and I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon about halfway through next week. For the most part the pain is manageable, which I am grateful for. My ability to move around has also gotten a little easier since I swapped my crutches for a knee walker, but I'm still pretty limited mobility-wise.

I’ve spent the last few days on the couch, binge watching baking shows on Netflix and National Geographic documentaries on Disney+, and trying to avoid getting up as much as possible.

While I did get some reading done at the beginning of the week, I haven’t read very much since my accident. I just haven’t been able to focus well enough to read.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 75/634
📱Ebook TBR: 6/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 6/13
Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 87/150+

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~Doctor Who: The Resurrection Casket — This was a great audiobook! David Tennent is the ideal person to narrate books about the 10th Doctor. 🎧: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~Doctor Who: The Nightmare of Black Island — This was another great audiobook, which was read by Anthony Head. 🎧: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~The Enchantress Returns — This is the second book in The Land of Stories series. I enjoyed this book just as much as the first one. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
~A Grimm Warning — The third book in The Land of Stories series was just as good as the first two. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
None

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
None

DNFed:
None

Currently Reading:
~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — I am seriously considering DNFing this book, and may do so if I don’t make any significant progress in the next week. 📚
~The Count of Monte Cristo — I am currently on chapter 46 and really enjoying the story. 📚
~Beyond the Kingdoms — I’m only a couple of chapters into the fourth Land of Stories book, but it’s been good so far. 📚
~Doctor Who: Winner Takes All — I’m currently about a third of the way through this Doctor Who audiobook. It’s narrated by Camille Coduri, who played Jackie Tyler (Rose’s mum) in the television series. 🎧

At this point I am not setting any reading goals for next week. Until I know what kind of treatment I’m going to be undergoing for my ankle, I’m probably going to continue to have a hard time concentrating.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I had a doctor’s appointment on Thursday morning to get more information about my fractured ankle, and it turns out that my fracture is not super serious, which is a big relief. A small piece of bone has gotten chipped away from my ankle, which apparently is a fairly common injury. It can’t really be set in the way a more serious break would be, so I just have to wait for scar tissue to form around it to hold it in place.

I came home from the appointment rocking some new footwear, and I am so grateful that it is a boot and not a cast. I can’t do any strenuous activities, but I’m allowed to walk around as much as my foot can stand.

Unfortunately, I did not make any progress on my Mount Olympus climb this week. In fact, I did very little reading at all. I spent almost the entire week curled up on the couch, binge-watching baking shows on Netflix (Baking Impossible and The Great British Baking Show to be specific).

I did manage to finish a couple of books on Saturday, but both of them were from my New Books list, so I wasn’t able to use them for this challenge.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — Amazingly enough, I actually did make some progress on this book during the week. I think I’m going to give it a bit more time instead of DNFing it. 📚
~The Count of Monte Cristo — This was really the only TBR book that I read with any regularity this week. I’ve stopped counting my number of chapters each night, so I’m currently a little bit ahead of where I had planned to be. Right now I’m on chapter 68. 📚
~Beyond the Kingdoms — I just didn’t feel like reading this book during the week. I will get back to the story eventually, but I think I need a break from this series for a little while. 📚
~Doctor Who: Winner Takes All — This has been a good audiobook so far. I have read this book before (in physical form), however, so I’m not in a huge hurry to finish it. 🎧
~Showcase Presents: Phantom Stranger, Vol. 1 — I usually prefer Marvel to DC, but I’m really enjoying this collection of comic books. DC has several supernatural titles, and I’ve really enjoyed all of the ones I’ve had a chance to read. 📚

My main goal for next week is to get back into a routine that doesn’t involve quite so much television. Hopefully that will allow me to make significant progress on my Mount Olympus climb before my next update.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good evening, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I just got back from an author event at one of my local libraries, where I had the chance to see Julia Quinn (author of the Bridgerton series). It was a great afternoon, and I was really excited to get my copy of The Viscount Who Loved Me signed.

My ankle is rather sore after standing in line for an autograph, but overall it has been feeling better this week. I still spent most of the week resting on the couch and watching television (mostly binging The Great British Baking Show), but I also managed to get back into reading in a big way, and made significant progress on my Mount Olympus climb.

Part of the reason for that progress is that the March Mystery Madness readathon started this week. I wasn’t sure if I was going to participate this year, but I decided to just go for it. This year I wanted to get back into the Hamish Macbeth series, by M.C. Beaton, and I’m really glad I did. All of the books in the series are fairly short (between 150-200 pages), so I should be checking quite a few titles off my TBR list over the coming weeks.

Of course, I am planning to continue the other books on my “currently reading” list as well, and hope to finish them sooner rather than later.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 83/634
📱Ebook TBR: 6/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 6/13
Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 95/150+

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~Death of an Outsider — I really enjoyed getting back into the Hamish Macbeth series this week. The third book of the series was a great murder mystery with no shortage of suspects. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Perfect Wife — I really enjoyed the fourth book in the Hamish Macbeth series. I would’ve read the entire book in a single sitting if I hadn’t started reading so late at night. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Hussy — The fifth book of the Hamish Macbeth series was very fast paced. I ended up staying up past one in the morning to finish it. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~The Count of Monte Cristo — It took me almost a month, but I have officially finished The Count of Monte Cristo! I’m really glad that I took the time to read it. The book is so much better than the movie adaptation. I’ll definitely be reading more books by Dumas later this year. 📚: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
~Death of a Snob — This is the sixth book in the Hamish Macbeth series. I had a really hard time putting this one down. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Prankster — Book seven of the Hamish Macbeth series was a really good read. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Greedy Woman — The eighth book in the Hamish Macbeth series was a very quick read. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
None

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
~Showcase Presents: Phantom Stranger, Vol. 1 — There were a few stories that I wasn’t impressed with, but overall I enjoyed this comic book collection. I generally prefer Marvel to DC, but I’ve found that I do enjoy DC’s supernatural stories. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

DNFed:
None

Currently Reading:
~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — I’ve only read about 20 pages this week, but any progress is good progress. 📚
~Beyond the Kingdoms — I am still taking a break from this book. I plan to get back into it next week. 📚
~Doctor Who: Winner Takes All — I am also taking a break from this book for a little while. I’m just not in the mood to listen to an audiobook right now. 🎧
~Death of a Travelling Man — The next book in the Hamish Macbeth series has been really good so far. 📚

Next week promises to be very busy, so I’m not going to be setting any goals. I will continue to participate in March Mystery Madness, however, and should manage to read a decent number of books in the Hamish Macbeth series.

It was really cool to listen to her talk about her books! She had a lot of great stories to tell, and was very funny. I'm really glad that I was able to go...especially since I wasn't able to drive with my injured ankle. Fortunately my dad was willing to drive me down to the library and pick me up afterward. He's the best!

I have gotten so obsessed with this show! I honestly don't know what I'm going to do when I run out of new episodes to watch. I've already picked up a few of the show's cookbooks though, so there will definitely be baking happening soon.

On April 23rd and 27th, there is a stage play adaptation of Spirited Away that is going to be shown in movie theaters in North America!

I don't know how many theaters are going to be showing the stage adaptation, so you'll need to check your local theater’s listings if you're interested, but tickets are already available for purchase. If you’d like to learn more about the show, here’s a link to the GKids website… https://gkids.com/films/spirited-away... They've got a link to the trailer on their website, which looks amazing!

I had some good news from the orthopedist this week. After getting some new x-rays taken, I was told that I could begin slowly transitioning out of the boot and back into normal shoes. I’m doing my best not to overdo it, but I’m really pleased that my ankle is healing well.

It’s been a pretty busy week, but I still managed to make time for the March Mystery Madness readathon. Almost all of the books I read this week were mystery novels from my TBR, so I was able to make a lot of progress on my Mount Olympus climb as well.

~Doctor Who: Winner Takes All — Even though I’m not in the mood to listen to an audiobook, I’m going to try and finish this one in the coming week. 🎧
~Death of a Bore — I am currently about halfway through this book, and will probably finish it before I go to bed tonight. 📚

I’m in for another very busy week next week, but I do have a couple of reading goals that I would like to accomplish. The first is to finish the two fiction titles that have been on my “Currently Reading” list for the past several weeks. Even though I’m not in the mood for either of them right now, I do want to be able to check them off my TBR sooner rather than later.

I am also planning to continue reading the Hamish Macbeth series next week. I currently have 16 books remaining in the series (including the one I’m reading right now), so I am going to try and finish the series before the end of the month. Do you think I’ll be able to manage it?

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I wanted to go ahead and post this week’s update a little early. It has been a pretty busy week, but I am feeling really good about the things I’ve managed to accomplish.

Since my last update, I have finally managed to get my “Currently Reading” list under control. If you’ve been following my updates, you know that there were a few titles on that list that I had been “reading” for close to (and in one case, well over) a month. It’s not really typical for me to stall out on books like that (especially for such a long period of time), so I was determined to get back into those books this week. I was able to finish all three, which is awesome!

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 106/634
📱Ebook TBR: 6/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 9/13
Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 121/150+

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~Beyond the Kingdoms — This is the fourth book in The Land of Stories series, which I have been taking a break from over the past couple of weeks. When I decided to get back into this book, I found that I had a really hard time putting it down. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Winner Takes All — This was a really good audiobook. Camille Coduri is a great narrator. 🎧: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Pride and Prejudice — This is one of my all-time favorite novels, and it was a lot of fun to listen to while I was working on household projects this week. Unfortunately, I did have a couple of issues with this audiobook. While I liked the narrator very much, she did mispronounce the names of a couple of the estates (Rosings Park and Longbourn), which I found rather surprising. I was also surprised by the fact that the chapters were not separated into individual tracks. Having only one 11.5-hour track made it very difficult to return to earlier scenes on the occasions when my reading was interrupted. 🎧: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In addition to those books, I also finished several Hamish Macbeth mysteries. Last week I announced that since I only had 16 books remaining, I was going to attempt to finish the rest of the series before the end of the month. I’ve been able to read a total of 8 books since my last update. The titles I read this week (books 20-27) include…
~Death of a Bore — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Dreamer — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Maid — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Gentle Lady — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Witch — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Valentine — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Chimney Sweep — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Kingfisher — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
~H.H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil — I managed to power through the rest of this book on Friday afternoon, and I have to confess that I am glad to be done with this one. This is a well-researched and well-written book, and the author did a good job of separating history from legend, so I would definitely recommend checking it out if you are doing research on Holmes. Unfortunately, I found it to be a very slow read, which ultimately took me over two months to finish. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~The Hobbit Sketchbook — I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to learn about Alan Lee’s work on The Hobbit films, and his experience illustrating Tolkien’s novel. The sketches in this book are incredible! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~The Lord of the Rings Sketchbook — I also enjoyed learning about Alan Lee’s work on The Lord of the Rings films, and his experience illustrating the original novels. The sketches in this book were amazing, and I liked having the opportunity to see sketches of scenes and characters that never made it into the films. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
None

Finished Reading (Poetry and Drama):
~Classic Love Poems — This was a good collection of poems. Richard Armitage is the perfect reader for these poems! 🎧: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DNFed:
None

Currently Reading:
~Death of Yesterday — I am currently about two-thirds of the way through this book, and will probably finish it this afternoon. It has been really good so far! 📚

Starting tomorrow I will actually be participating in two readathons, March Mystery Madness and the Mini-Manga Readathon, so I will be splitting my reading time between mysteries and manga during the coming week.

I am planning to continue reading Hamish Macbeth for March Mystery Madness, and will hopefully be able to finish four or five books next week, which will keep me on track to finish the rest of the series before the end of the month.

For the Mini-Manga Readathon, I will be reading the Demon Slayer series, which is 23 volumes in length. I picked this series up at the end of 2022, and I’m really looking forward to reading it.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I had a little extra time this morning, so I thought I’d go ahead and post this week’s update…

I have done a massive amount of reading this week, which has allowed me to finish my Mount Olympus climb much earlier than I anticipated.

I am so excited that I’ve been able to make so much progress on my TBR list, especially in such a short amount of time! So far, I’ve managed to complete 17% of the books on my TBR list!

While I do plan to spend the rest of the year reading titles from my TBR list, I haven’t decided how I am going to proceed now that I’ve completed this challenge. I’m currently considering a second climb up Mount Olympus, but haven’t quite made up my mind yet.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 136/634
📱Ebook TBR: 6/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 11/13
TBR Checklist Total: 153/883

Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 150/150 (Complete!)

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~Doctor Who: The Stealers Of Dreams — This was a great Doctor Who story! I really enjoyed Camille Coduri’s narration. 🎧: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Pest Control — This was a fantastic audiobook, which featured the Tenth Doctor and Donna, and was read by David Tennant. It also had a soundtrack that played during many of the scenes, which really made the audiobook feel like an episode of the tv show. 🎧: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Hamish Macbeth books I read this week include…
~Death of Yesterday — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Policeman — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Liar — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Nurse — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Ghost — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of an Honest Man — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Death of a Green-Eyed Monster — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In addition to these books, I also read the 35th (and most recent) Hamish Macbeth novel, as well as two short stories, officially finishing the series about a week before the end of March Mystery Madness. I have not included these titles on this week’s list, since I purchased all three in 2023 and they cannot be counted toward my Mount TBR Challenge total.

~Ordeal by Innocence

With less than a week left to go before the end of March Mystery Madness, there really isn’t enough time for me to start (or continue) another mystery series. Instead, I will be reading one or two of Agatha Christie’s standalone novels before the readathon ends. I’ve decided to start with Ordeal by Innocence.

After March Mystery Madness ends, I am planning to take a little break from reading the books on my TBR list. Since the beginning of the year, I’ve purchased quite a few books, and I want to take a few weeks to try and get caught up on those new titles. I currently have read 36 out 61, but I don’t want to get too far behind on them. (One of my goals for the year is to read all of the books I buy during 2023 before the end of the year, so that I won’t be adding new titles to next year’s TBR.)

I will be posting an update next Sunday, but after that I will probably take a break from posting until we’re about halfway through April. Regardless of whether or not I decide to attempt a second climb, I will continue to post updates after that break.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

It has been a busy week, but a super productive one. I spent most of the week working on household projects, mostly unpacking my remaining moving boxes and organizing my kitchen (which has been a disaster area ever since I moved in). I’ve been listening to the My Favorite Murder podcast while I work, so I’ve enjoyed getting things done this week.

In addition to all of my housework, I’ve also been able to do some reading.

Friday was the final day of the March Mystery Madness readathon, and I was able to read a few more books (including one new mystery purchase) before it ended. This was my third time participating in this particular readathon, and I had a great time. I had a chance to read a lot of fantastic titles (not only the Hamish Macbeth series, but some Agatha Christie mysteries as well), and I’m looking forward to participating again in the future.

As of today, here are my current TBR totals…

~Ordeal by Innocence — I really enjoyed this standalone Agatha Christie mystery! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Mr. Parker Pyne, Detective — I really enjoyed this collection of short mysteries, especially since Parker Pyne is not a typical detective. Rather than solving murders, he focuses on helping people find the happiness they have lost. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):
~The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Chronicles II: Creatures & Characters — This behind-the-scenes book was really interesting! I really enjoyed learning more about the work that went into creating the first movie in The Hobbit trilogy. I loved the fact that the book included commentary from both the production team members and the actors, because you got to see how they worked together to develop the characters. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Right now, I am reading books from my “New Books” list, which do not count for the Mount TBR Challenge.

For the next couple of weeks, I will be taking a break from reading the titles on my TBR list to focus on the books I have purchased this year. I currently have 21 titles left to read on my “New Books” list, and I’m really excited to see how many of those books I can finish before the middle of April.

I’m also going to be taking a break from posting updates on this thread until about halfway through the month. Hopefully by then I’ll have made up my mind about whether or not to attempt a second Mount Olympus climb.

In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts…

Should I attempt a second climb up Mount Olympus this year?

Should I just keep a record of how many TBR books I manage to read before the end of 2023, and try to read as many as possible?

-or-

Should I attempt to complete a specific percentage of my TBR list before the end of the year? (Last year I managed to complete 40% of the books on my TBR. I currently need to read just over 197 additional books to tie last year’s score.)

Regardless of what I choose to do, I am planning to continue posting updates on this thread, but I’d love to get your input before I make a final decision. Thanks, everyone!

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

This afternoon promises to be really busy, so I thought I’d go ahead and post this week’s update while I had a little extra time…

For the past couple of weeks, my focus has been on reading the titles on my “New Books” list. At the time of my last post, I had a total of 21 books remaining on that list. I did end up buying some more books, however, which brought my total up to 30. Oops! I’ll get them all read eventually, right? 😂

As of this morning, I have 12 books left to read out of those 30. While that is still a fair amount of books, my list is looking a little more manageable, and I feel pretty good about the progress I was able to make during my TBR break.

In addition to reading, I’ve also spent a considerable amount of time thinking over my options for tackling the rest of my TBR.

Since I currently have 727 unread books remaining on my shelves (both physical and digital), I think it’s fairly safe to say that there’s no chance of me finishing all of the remaining books on my TBR before the end of the year. That being said, I would really like to push myself to read as many of those titles as possible.

To that end, I have decided that my goal for the remainder of the year will be to complete at least 40% of my TBR, which is what I managed to do last year. That’s a total of 354 books!

With the books I’ve read so far (including those I finished after completing my Mount Olympus climb), I’ll need to read 198 additional TBR titles to meet my goal.

Rather than making a second (and possibly third) Mount Olympus climb, I’ve decided to treat the rest of this year as a continuation of my original climb…which may soon get a new name. I’m kind of partial to “Katherine’s Great TBR Quest.”

My plan is to continue to keep a running total of the books I read throughout the rest of the year, starting where I left off at the end of my Mount Olympus climb (at #151). I will also continue my weekly progress updates each Sunday, which will help me stay on track.

Even though I have not read any books from my TBR list this week, here are my current TBR totals…

~An Author's Odyssey — This is the fifth book in The Land of Stories series. I will be starting it later today. 📚

Now that I am back to reading the titles on my TBR list, my plan for next week is to finish the remaining two books in The Land of Stories series, followed by the fourth book in the Ice Planet Barbarians series. If I have enough time, I might start Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series as well.

While my primary focus is going to be on titles from my TBR list, I will also be continuing to read the books on my “New Books” list, as time allows.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good evening, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I just got back from seeing the stage play adaptation of Spirited Away at my local movie theater. It was phenomenal! The sets, music, and acting were wonderful! Kanna Hashimoto also did an amazing job playing Chihiro! If you have an opportunity to see it before it leaves theaters, I highly recommend going!

Here is the link to the Spirited Away: Live On Stage website if you’re interested in learning more… https://gkids.com/films/spirited-away...

As far as reading it concerned, this week I’ve divided my time pretty equally between reading books from my TBR and “New Books” lists, and I’ve been able to make a decent amount of progress on both.

Here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 155/634
📱Ebook TBR: 7/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 11/13
TBR Checklist Total: 173/883 (19.5% complete)

Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 150/150 (Challenge Complete)
Total Progress Toward 40% TBR List Completion: 173/354 (48.8%)

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~An Author's Odyssey — This is the fifth book in The Land of Stories series. It was a great continuation of the series. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Worlds Collide — This is the sixth, and final, book in The Land of Stories series. I really enjoyed this book, and thought that it was a great way to end the series. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Barbarian Mine — The fourth book of the Ice Planet Barbarians series was a really good read. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Big Bad — This is the second book in the Big Murder Mystery series, by Kirsten Weiss. I really enjoyed it!📱: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
This week I decided to finally read Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, which is probably his most well-known creation. To be honest, I had really mixed feelings about this series the entire time I was reading it, and I actually changed my mind about my star ratings several times. While I did find the story interesting, and was impressed with the art, I can’t really say that I liked it (with the exception of The Sandman: The Dream Hunters, which I did really like). I did finish the series, because I already owned all of the books, but probably wouldn’t have if I had been borrowing them from the library. Content Alert: This series is pretty dark and intense, and definitely lives up to its 17+ rating. (view spoiler) The volumes I read this week include…
~Preludes & Nocturnes — 📚: ⭐️⭐️
~The Doll's House — 📚: ⭐️⭐️
~Dream Country — 📚: ⭐️⭐️
~Season of Mists — 📚: ⭐️⭐️
~A Game of You — 📚: ⭐️⭐️

~Runaways: The Complete Collection, Vol. 2 — I will be starting this comic book collection as soon as I post today’s update. 📚

During the upcoming week, I am planning to focus exclusively on reading comic books and manga. My primary goal for the week will be to finish reading the Runaways series, but I am planning to read my last few Harley Quinn comic books as well.

I will also be reading some titles from my “New Books” list. I recently purchased two complete manga series (Pokémon Adventures and The Promised Neverland), which I’ve been wanting to read for quite a while.

Starting on Saturday, April 29th, I will also be participating in the Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon. I doubt I will participate for the full 24 hours, because I do value my sleep, but I hope to get through quite a few volumes of manga during the event.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

The Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon just ended a few minutes ago, and I had a lot of fun! I only read for about 14 hours yesterday (partly because I wasn’t willing to sacrifice a good night’s sleep, and partly because my eyes started bothering me toward the end of hour 14), but I got a lot of reading done. I decided to focus on reading manga, and was able to complete a total of 25 volumes! If you’re interested in learning more about my readathon experience, including the books I read, you can find my photos of the event on Instagram @unapologbkworm.

Although I’ve spent most of the week (and all of yesterday) reading manga titles from my “New Books” list, I also finished several comic books from my TBR list this week, so I did manage to make a decent amount of progress on my TBR goal as well.

Here are my current TBR totals…

This week I was able to finish Marvel's Runaways series. I really enjoyed it! The artwork and stories were great, and I loved the characters! The volumes I read this week include…
~Runaways: The Complete Collection, Vol. 2 — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Runaways: The Complete Collection, Vol. 3 — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Runaways: The Complete Collection, Vol. 4 — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I also finished the following comic books…
~Harley Quinn and Her Gang of Harleys — This was a really fun read! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Harley Quinn, Vol. 1: Die Laughing — I really enjoyed this comic book, and I’m looking forward to catching up on the rest of the series when I have the opportunity. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Harley's Little Black Book — This was a fun collection of Harley Quinn comics, but I did like some of the stories more than others. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

~The Witcher Omnibus — I’m currently about a quarter of the way through this comic book collection, and really enjoying it. 📚

While I did consider spending another week exclusively reading comic books and manga, I’ve decided to focus on reading mostly fantasy novels next week, starting with The Iron Wyrm Affair.

I am also going to be doing a buddy read of The Three Musketeers during May and the first half of June, which I’m really looking forward to.

Depending on how much free time I have next week, I will also be continuing to read the books on my “New Books” list. At the very least, I should be able to finish a few more volumes of manga.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

Yesterday morning I had the opportunity to watch the coronation of King Charles. I really enjoyed seeing the ceremony! This was my first time seeing a coronation live on television, and I found the whole process very interesting.

Other than getting up super early yesterday morning to watch the coronation, it’s been a pretty laid back week. I’ve spent most of my free time reading, but I also binge-watched Queen Charlotte on Netflix.

Although most of the books I finished this week were from my “New Books” list, I did manage to make a decent amount of progress on my TBR list as well. I’m currently reading a mixture of fantasy novels and comic books, which has been a lot of fun.

Here are my current TBR totals…

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
~The Witcher Omnibus — I enjoyed this comic book collection, which included four Witcher stories. Both the art and stories were really good. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Black Widow, Vol. 1: S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Most Wanted — This is the first half of a two-book Black Widow story. I really enjoyed the art and story, as well as the characters! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Black Widow, Vol. 2: No More Secrets — This is the second half of the two-book Black Widow story that started with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Most Wanted. I really enjoyed the conclusion of this story! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Black Widow: No Restraints Play (Black Widow — This was a really good story. Content Alert: (view spoiler) 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~The Web of Black Widow — I really enjoyed this Black Widow story. It had a really interesting plot. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Tales of Suspense: Featuring Hawkeye and the Winter Soldier — This was a fun comic book to read. I loved seeing a team-up between Barton and Barnes! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Old Man Hawkeye, Vol. 1: An Eye for an Eye — This is the first comic book in the Old Man Hawkeye series. I thought it was really interesting, and the artwork was great! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Old Man Hawkeye, Vol. 2: The Whole World Blind — This is the second comic book in the Old Man Hawkeye series. I thought it did a nice job of concluding the story that was started in the first book. That being said, the ending seemed to indicate that the series would continue, but there don’t appear to be any other books being released. I’ll have to do some more research, but it appears that this series “ends” after this book. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Suicide Squad, Volume 1: Trial By Fire — This is the first collection of the original Suicide Squad comic book series. While I did enjoy the stories in this book, the attitudes and language of some of the characters was problematic. The series is definitely reflective of the time period in which it was written, and the first collection included quite a few examples of stereotyping, racism, and sexism. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

~The Three Musketeers — I am currently doing a buddy read of this book here on Goodreads. We are 10 chapters into the book, and I am loving the story and characters. 📚
~The Red Plague Affair — This is the second book in the Bannon and Clare series. I'm currently only six chapters in, but it has been good so far. 📚
~Suicide Squad, Volume 2: The Nightshade Odyssey — This is the second collection of the original Suicide Squad series. I'm currently about halfway through this book, and will probably finish it later today. 📚

In addition to continuing my buddy read of The Three Musketeers, my plan for next week is to continue reading the Bannon and Clare novels. I will probably not finish the series by the end of next week, because I do have a lot left to read, but I will give it my best shot.

I am also planning to continue reading books from my comic book collection. I will probably try to read my remaining Black Widow and Suicide Squad collections, and I may also return to reading Doctor Strange, if I have time to do so.

Finally, I will be continuing to read some titles from my “New Books” list next week. I just started reading the Bleach manga, which I am really enjoying.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good evening, everyone! Happy Sunday!

It has been a very busy week, and I’ve managed to get a tremendous amount done. I still have a lot of work to do as far as my household organizing is concerned, but I’m feeling really good about the progress I made this week.

This week I have sort of been participating in the Bout of Books 37 Readathon. I say “sort of participating” because while I have kept track of the number of books/pages I read during the week, I decided not to post anything about my progress on social media. I didn’t really have a specific plan for this readathon, and just wanted to see how much reading I could accomplish this week.

As it turns out, I was able to read quite a lot. I tried to split my time evenly between reading titles from my TBR and “New Books” lists, and I actually made some decent progress on both.

Here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 182/634

~The Damnation Affair — This is the fourth and final book in the Bannon and Clare series. I thought this was an interesting story, but was surprised by the fact that Bannon and Clare are not actually in it. I would also call it a horror story, rather than fantasy. Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
This week I finished reading the volumes I own of the original Suicide Squad comic book series. While I enjoyed most of the stories included in these books, the books did include the same problematic content that I mentioned when I discussed the first book in last week's update. The books I read this week include…
~Suicide Squad, Volume 2: The Nightshade Odyssey — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Suicide Squad, Volume 3: Rogues — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Suicide Squad, Volume 4: The Janus Directive — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Suicide Squad, Volume 5: Apokolips Now — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Suicide Squad, Volume 6: The Phoenix Gambit — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Suicide Squad Vol. 7: The Dragon's Hoard — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I also read the following comic book…
~Suicide Squad Vol. 1: The Black Vault — I really enjoyed the artwork in this book, but I felt like the narrative jumped around a little too much. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Poetry and Drama):
~Cyrano de Bergerac — I picked up a copy of this book after watching the 2021 musical adaptation (Cyrano), starring Peter Dinklage. I really enjoyed reading the original play, but I do like the musical version better. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

DNFed:

Currently Reading:
~The Three Musketeers — I am continuing to enjoy this buddy read immensely! We read chapters 11-22 this week, and will be reading chapters 23-29 next week. 📚
~Spider-Man/Deadpool, Vol. 0: Don't Call It A Team-Up — This comic book has been interesting so far. I assumed that it would be one continuous story, but it’s actually a collection of shorter stories. 📚

In addition to continuing my buddy read of The Three Musketeers, next week I will be reading the Veronica Speedwell series, by Deanna Raybourn. Although I have already read the first book, I’m going to be reading it again prior to diving into the rest of the series (since it’s been years since I read it and I remember next to nothing about it). I’m really looking forward to reading this series in its entirety.

I’d also like to read some more comic books next week. I’m currently planning to finish reading my Black Widow comic books, and may try to read my remaining Hawkeye comic books as well.

Finally, I will be continuing to read the titles on my “New Books” list.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I had a little extra free time this morning, so I thought I would go ahead and post this week’s update...

I ended up spending most of the week focusing on the titles from my “New Books” list, so this week’s update is going to be pretty short. I do feel like I’m making pretty good progress on both of my lists though, and I’ve really enjoyed the books I’ve been able to read this week!

Here are my current TBR totals…

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~A Curious Beginning — While this book was not on my TBR list does not count toward my TBR total, I wanted to re-read it before reading the rest of the Veronica Speedwell series. It’s a really good thing I did too, because I had forgotten most of the story. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished Reading (Nonfiction):

Finished Reading (Manga, Comic Books, & Graphic Novels):
~Spider-Man/Deadpool, Vol. 0: Don't Call It A Team-Up — While I did enjoy some of the stories in this collection more than others, this was a fun read. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Black Widow: The Itsy-Bitsy Spider — This was a great collection of Black Widow stories! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Black Widow: Web of Intrigue — This was a good collection of older Black Widow stories. I found the different art styles really interesting. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Black Widow: The Sting of the Widow — This was another good collection of older Black Widow stories. It was cool to see how her costume evolved over time. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Black Widow: Welcome To The Game — This was a great comic book collection! I especially enjoyed the art in this book. Content Alert: (view spoiler) 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~The Three Musketeers — I am continuing to thoroughly enjoy this book. It has been a great buddy read so far! I am finding not reading ahead difficult though. 📚
~A Perilous Undertaking — I’m currently about halfway through the second Veronica Speedwell book, and it has been fantastic so far! 📚
~Hawkeye: Avenging Archer — I’m currently about a third of the way into this comic book collection. The stories have been pretty good so far. 📚

My plan for next week is to continue reading the Veronica Speedwell series. I will also be finishing my Hawkeye comic books. Then, depending on how much time I have, I may also start my last DC title, which is called Showcase Presents: Ghosts, Vol. 1.

Finally, I will be continuing to read titles from my “New Books” list. I’ve already finished just over 75% of the titles on that list, and I’d really like to make it to 90% by the end of next week. We'll see how it goes!

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I had a very productive week, mostly because I made a deal with myself that I could read as much as I wanted, but only if I worked on the house (and my unpacking) in between chapters, and at the end of each manga (or comic book) volume I read. This actually worked really well! I have a fully functioning kitchen now (which I haven’t had since moving in back in November), and I was able to put a ton of boxes out for this week’s recycling pickup.

I also did a tremendous amount of reading this week! Most of the books I completed were from my “New Books” list though, so this week’s TBR update is going to be kind of short.

Here are my current TBR totals…

~Hawkeye: Avenging Archer — This was a good collection of Hawkeye stories. I really liked the artwork in this book. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Ultimate Comics Hawkeye — I really enjoyed the artwork and story, but since this is apparently part of a larger Marvel storyline, this book’s conclusion was not satisfying. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Occupy Avengers, Vol. 1: Taking Back Justice — This comic book collection was okay. I did like the first story, but didn’t care for Red Wolf’s origin story, which was included at the end of the book. It felt really out of place in the context of the narrative that I’d just finished, and it also included a lot of problematic content. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Occupy Avengers Vol. 2: In Plain Sight — I enjoyed this comic book more than the first volume, but felt like the ending was too abrupt. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Showcase Presents: Ghosts, Vol. 1 — I did enjoy most of the stories in this comic book collection, and it turned out to be a pretty quick read despite its size. That being said, there were some stories that I did not care for. There were several stories that included problematic content, most likely due to when they were written. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~The Three Musketeers — I am continuing to enjoy this book very much! 📚
~A Dangerous Collaboration — I’m currently about six chapters into this book, and really enjoying it! Depending on how much time I have, I may actually finish this one later today. 📚

My plan for the beginning of next week is to finish my current reads (with the exception of The Three Musketeers).

As for the second half of the week…

Starting on Thursday (June 1st), I will be participating in the SciFi Summer Readathon, which is hosted by Seasons of Reading. I’m really looking forward to this readathon, because I have a ton of science fiction titles on my TBR list to choose from. It’ll be interesting to see how many I can read before the end of June.

During the readathon I am planning to take a break from the Veronica Speedwell series, but I will be returning to it as soon as the readathon has ended. In fact, other than The Three Musketeers, which is a buddy read, I will only be reading SciFi for the duration of June. I will also be taking a break from reading the books on my “New Books” list, so you should see a lot of progress toward my TBR goal over the course of the next month.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good evening, everyone! Happy Sunday!

The SciFi Summer Readathon started on Thursday morning, and I have to say that I am having a great time so far! I managed to finish the final few Veronica Speedwell books before the readathon began (so I won’t have to take a break from the series after all), and I’ve had a chance to read a tremendous number of SciFi titles since Thursday.

Since almost every book I completed this week was on my TBR list, I’ve managed to make a lot of progress toward my TBR goal!

That being said, I did do some math this week, and I determined that if I want to meet my goal of 40% list completion, I need to read an average of 20 books per month through the end of the year. I’m confident that it’s do-able, but I will definitely need to stay on top of my reading (and my book buying) to be successful.

Here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 205/634
📱Ebook TBR: 7/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 11/13
TBR Checklist Total: 223/883 (25.2% complete)

Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 150/150 (Challenge Complete)
Total Progress Toward 40% TBR List Completion: 223/354 (62.9% complete)

Here are the books I finished prior to the start of the SciFi Summer Readathon…

Finished Reading (Fiction):
I wasn’t sure if I’d have enough time this week, but I was able to finish reading the rest of the Veronica Speedwell series prior to the start of the SciFi Summer Readathon. I’m really glad that I was able to finish the series, because I would have had a very difficult time taking a month-long break from it. They were all excellent books, and a lot of fun to read. The books I read this week include…
~A Dangerous Collaboration — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~A Murderous Relation — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~An Unexpected Peril — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~An Impossible Impostor — 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~I also read A Sinister Revenge, which is the eighth (and possibly final?) book in the series. Unfortunately since I bought it this year, it does not count toward my TBR total. I did give it a four-star rating, however.

Here are the books I’ve finished since the start of the SciFi Summer Readathon…

Finished Reading (Fiction):
Since Thursday, I’ve spent most of my free time reading Doctor Who novels, and I’ve really enjoyed all of the books I've read! The stories were fun, and the authors did a great job of presenting the main characters on the page. The books I read this week include…
~Doctor Who: The Stone Rose — This book features the 10th Doctor and Rose. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: The Resurrection Casket — This book features the 10th Doctor and Rose. Although I did listen to the audiobook version of this novel earlier in the year, I wanted to take the opportunity to read my hardback edition as well. I enjoyed reading my physical copy more than listening to the audiobook, and actually noticed some things that I apparently missed while I was listening. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: The Nightmare of Black Island — This book features the 10th Doctor and Rose. This was another Doctor Who novel that I listened to as an audiobook earlier this year. While I did enjoy the audiobook, I preferred reading the physical book. There were quite a few things I missed while listening to the audio that I caught this time around, so I’m glad that I took the opportunity to read my hardback copy. Content Alert: (view spoiler) 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: The Art of Destruction — This book features the 10th Doctor and Rose. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: The Price of Paradise — This book features the 10th Doctor and Rose. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Sting of the Zygons — This book features the 10th Doctor and Martha. Content Alert: (view spoiler) 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I also read the following Star Wars book…
~Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Alien Species — This was an interesting read with great information and illustrations. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Currently Reading:
~The Three Musketeers — I’m currently about 100 pages away from finishing this book, and I have to confess that I am having a really hard time sticking to my reading schedule of only two chapters per day. It’s just so good! 📚
~Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Characters — I’m currently only a few entries into this book, but I’m enjoying it so far. 📚
~Doctor Who: The Last Dodo — I’ve read about one-third of this book, and I’m really enjoying it so far. I will probably finish it tonight. 📚

While I will be finishing my buddy read of The Three Musketeers next week, the rest of next week’s reading time will be devoted to reading my collection of Doctor Who novels and Star Wars essentials guides.

Depending on my mood, I may also start one of my Pop Culture and Philosophy books. I have one called The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real, which looks really interesting.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I had a little extra time this morning, so I thought I’d go ahead and post this week’s update…

I finally had a chance to see the new Super Mario Bros. movie this week, and I absolutely loved it! If you’re a fan of the video games, then I highly recommend watching this movie! It definitely put me in the mood to break out my old Nintendo consoles for a gaming marathon.

The SciFi Summer Readathon also continued this week, and I have managed to make a sizable dent in my pile of Doctor Who novels, as well as my TBR list. I’m really excited about the progress I’m making! It might be a bit of a stretch, but I’d like to try and finish my collection of Doctor Who books and make it to 30% list completion by the end of the month. Do you think I can do it?

Here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 220/634
📱Ebook TBR: 7/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 11/13
TBR Checklist Total: 238/883 (26.9% complete)

Finished Reading (Fiction):
~The Three Musketeers — This was a fabulous book! I’m so glad that I finally took the time to read it, and I’m really looking forward to reading more books by Dumas later this year! 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This week I also continued reading my collection of Doctor Who novels. I am continuing to thoroughly enjoy these books! The authors have done a great job of making these books feel just like an episode of the television series. The novels I read this week include…
~Doctor Who: The Last Dodo — This book features the 10th Doctor and Martha. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Wooden Heart — This book features the 10th Doctor and Martha. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Forever Autumn — This book features the 10th Doctor and Martha. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Sick Building — This book features the 10th Doctor and Martha. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Characters — I’m currently only about 30 pages into this book. It’s been good so far, but I just haven’t been in the mood for Star Wars this week. 📚
~Doctor Who: The Doctor Trap — I’m planning to start this book later this afternoon. 📚

Next week I will be continuing to read my collection of Doctor Who novels. I am also going to finish reading Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Characters. I was originally planning to read another essential guide after this one, but since I’m having such a great time reading Doctor Who right now, I’m going to focus exclusively on that instead.

I am still considering the possibility of starting The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real before the end of the readathon, but I probably won't get to it next week.

If I am able to finish all of my Doctor Who novels before the end of the readathon (which is actually looking surprisingly likely at this point), which of the following IPs should I focus on next? Firefly, Star Trek (TOS), or Star Wars?

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

We've just finished the third week of the SciFi Summer Readathon, and I ended up reading a fraction of what I had planned this week. The combination of allergy season, poor air quality, and a couple other health issues has just been kicking my butt this week. I ended up spending most of my free time sleeping on the couch, and binge-watching MythBusters (and several holiday baking competitions) on Discovery+.

While I didn't read quite as many books as I'd planned, I did make a decent amount of progress on my TBR list this week, and I’m still in good shape to finish my collection of Doctor Who novels before the end of the readathon.

Here are my current TBR totals…

📚Physical TBR: 230/634
📱Ebook TBR: 7/236
🎧Audiobook TBR: 11/13
TBR Checklist Total: 248/883 (28.0% complete)

Total Progress Up Mount Olympus: 150/150 (Challenge Complete)
Total Progress Toward 40% TBR List Completion: 248/354 (70.0% complete)

Here are the books I finished this week…

Finished Reading (Fiction):
This week I continued reading my collection of Doctor Who novels. I managed to finish the remaining stories with the 10th Doctor, and I am now on the 11th. These books continue to be great! The books I read this week include…
~Doctor Who: The Doctor Trap — This book features the 10th Doctor and Donna. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Beautiful Chaos — This book features the 10th Doctor and Donna. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: The Eyeless — This book features the 10th Doctor on his own. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: The Slitheen Excursion — This book features the 10th Doctor on his own. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Judgement of the Judoon — This book features the 10th Doctor on his own. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: The Taking of Chelsea 426 — This book features the 10th Doctor on his own. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Autonomy — This book features the 10th Doctor on his own. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: The Krillitane Storm — This book features the 10th Doctor on his own. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~Doctor Who: Apollo 23 — This book features the 11th Doctor and Amy. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I also finished the following Star Wars book…
~Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Characters — This was a great overview of the characters in the Star Wars universe. I do think it is important to mention, however, that this book was published prior to the creation of the movie prequels and sequels. It focuses on the characters from the original Star Wars trilogy, as well as the follow-up novels and comic books that I grew up with. I think there is an updated version of this book that includes characters from the prequel movies, but to be honest I don’t have a desire to read that edition because there were several things that were retconned when those movies were released. 📚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~Doctor Who: Night of the Humans — I will be starting this book right after posting this update. 📚

I am currently down to my final 14 Doctor Who books, and I think I’m going to try to get all of them read by the end of next week. Because these books are really quick reads, it shouldn’t be too hard to read two books a day, but it will all come down to the amount of time I’m able to spend reading.

After I finish my remaining Doctor Who books, I think I’m going to turn my attention to my unread Star Trek books. I’ve got a collection of books that are short story adaptations of the episodes from the original series that I’d like to read, as well as novelizations of the first six Star Trek movies. I definitely won’t be able to finish all of them, but I think I can get a pretty good start during the final week of June.

I would also like to dive into some of my SciFi ebooks. I honestly had forgotten just how many alien romance novels are on my Kindle app, and I think it would be fun to read some of those before the end of the readathon.

We'll just have to see how many books I'm able to read in the next 12 days...

Missed this question, but I would have picked Star Trek and it looks like that's what you went with :) Recently started watching Picard, enjoying it very much. I know that's not TOS, but still Star Trek!

That's great that I ended up choosing the IP you would have picked. I really debated between Star Trek and Firefly, and finally decided that I should read the series that has been on my bookshelves the longest amount of time. I think they'll be a lot of fun.

I'm currently on the second season of Picard, and I'm loving it! I'm also looking forward to watching Discovery and Strange New Worlds when I have the chance.

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 76 comments Hello, everyone! Happy Sunday!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a local Scottish Festival, and I had a great time! My favorite parts were watching the highland dance competition and the sheepherding demonstration, but the whole atmosphere was wonderful (especially since you could hear the bagpipes all over the fairgrounds). I definitely want to go to more events like this in the future!

In other news, we’ve officially reached the final week of the SciFi Summer Readathon! I’ve had a fun time participating in this readathon, and I’m really pleased with the amount of books I’ve managed to complete since the month began. Not only have I been able to finish all of my previously-unread Doctor Who novels, but I’ve also made a massive amount of progress on my TBR goal.

Given the progress I’ve made so far, I’m feeling confident about accomplishing my 40% list completion goal before the end of the year.

This week I was able to finish my collection of Doctor Who novels, and I have to say that I had so much fun reading them! I was not able to finish the series as a whole, as I am missing some books, but I am planning to get copies of those missing books so that I can finish the series. I will need to save that for another time, but I’m looking forward to reading more Doctor Who in the future.

The books I read this week featuring the 11th Doctor and Amy include…

~Star Trek 2 — I’m going to be starting this book as soon as I post today’s update. 📚

The final day of the SciFi Summer Readathon is on Friday, and I will be spending most of the week reading my collection of Star Trek books. I would also like to read a couple of my alien romance ebooks, but we’ll see how much time I have this week.

Once the readathon has ended, I am planning to be take a couple of weeks to focus exclusively on reading books from my “New Books” list. I’ve purchased a considerable number of books since the readathon began, so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do if I want to finish all of my new books before the end of the year. I currently have a total of 51 unread books on my “New Books” list, so I’m definitely in for a challenge…
