An interesting question...

What do you think? And why do you think it?

I personally say that yes, it should be.

Do you disagree? If so, why?

Have fun!

I think yes. If other people don't want it, they don't have to ssay it, but out of respect they should at least stand/be quiet

Should we pledge to something else? Or not at all. Is it because of the flag part or the God part?

It may seem weird to other countries, but it is part of what makes America America - patriotism and allegiance to our country, something that needs to be supported.

It's respecting the people who died for us to be free and to have that flag."

Yes.

Rose | 66 comments Before I say anything, I'm going to add that I am Canadian.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

I would say that, the pledge shouldn't be recited by younger children in schools,
Firstly because pledging your allegiance, isn't something that should be thrown around and taken lightly, it should be because of a serious genuine reason, no matter the country your pledging to, when you are mature enough to understand what it means.
Second, the "one Nation under God" I think that school children should not be reciting that daily before they even start to understand and develop their own sense of religion,
Third; Which god? America is a diverse country where people have different beliefs, when the pledge was written the god that was referred to was Christian, but now, decades after, is it still acurrate? One Nation under god- it could have various meanings and unless there is a unanimous decision about which god are you really "one nation under him?"
I don't think that the pledge itself should be removed just that it should only be said by people mature enough to understand and respect it.

Short answer, yes I think it should be recited in schools.
I also think that they should teach what it means. That it's not just something we say everyday to get it over with, but the real deep meaning behind it.

I believe that people should have a cboice. At the schools I know of near where I live kids get detention for not saying the pledge. It should still be recited but you shouldbe given a choice

Barbara I think it should be - I think its important for people to be reminded of what the principles of the country are, even though we look around and see where we fall short. But having said that, I think if there are students who don't want to say it for some reason they shouldn't be compelled to. I live in a town where there were a lot of Jehovah's Witness families and they didn't believe in saying the pledge, so they just stood quietly while the rest of the class recited it.

I wrote a whole essay on this for school!
*Clears throat*
Picture this, you are in your classroom in the morning just scrolling through your phone when the morning announcements come on and begin the pledge of allegiance. You notice that no one is standing, do you stand? Many young Americans do not stand for the pledge in the morning, and some believe that we should get rid of it entirely. But we need to recite the pledge in schools.

Firstly, we need to understand the intense history of our pledge to know why we should continue this dear tradition. Jack David Eller writes, in the Boston Review “The pledge has its origins in the civil war, but its widespread adoption was thanks to the promotions department of children's magazine.” It was popular in the civil war because they wanted confederates who recently rebelled to pledge themselves back to the United States. Now we use it as a way to show loyalty , and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Next, it is important for me to point out the plain disrespect shown for veterans when you do not recite the pledge of allegiance. Claire Meng, an article writer for Nordic News, acknowledges that “Millions of citizens, many of whom are relatives to the school’s community, serve or have served in the military, often at the expense of time with loved ones.”
Not only do veterans give their time, but often their lives as well for that flag you disrespect. It is also very rude to their families who miss them everyday. Pledging is a way to acknowledge their sacrifice.

However, others have said otherwise by stating that our pledge is outdated. One article points out “ Particularly with its mention of God. The United States is a mix of different cultures and religions, and the pledge isn’t inclusive." Where the author goes wrong here is that we are not pledging to God, we are pledging to a nation that is so blessed. Under God, is a way of stating the miracle of the U.S and how truly lucky we are to live here.

The pledge of allegiance is so important to recite in schools. Its purpose is not only to display our loyalty, but to also recognize our military that keeps us safe. With liberty and justice for all and a vow to do better in our daily lives. So I leave you with the question, will you stand?
