bookswithpaulette | 1625 comments Welcome to Team - Blue-Footed Booby!

We are back for another year of UNO my 5th year! Our mascot is very cute! Ive always wanted to go to Galapagos, maybe this is a sign 🙃

For those of you who are new to this challenge, do not worry. It may look like it is a lot to take in at first sight, but you'll see that it is a very easy game. You will be more aware of keeping an eye on character names whilst reading.

First things first though!
Please read the Rules If you're uncertain, it usually helps to go over them again. And then have a look at the spreadsheet to make it all more visual. And if you still have questions, I am all ears!

I’m your Captain, UNO is hands down my fav group challenge on GR. I live in Melbourne, Australia. We are well into Summer here, it’s been great over the holiday’s enjoying time at the beaches.

I have sent you all friend requests and will PM you soon with the link to this thread so hopefully we will see you all soon.

So tell me a little about yourselves? Share your favourite read from 2022 or your most recommended book. Because, yep I totally need to add more books to my TBR!!

When you arrive in the thread, please post a link to your Uno shelf.

Welcome everyone …. Most importantly, let’s have some fun!

*******

When do we start?
https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Important
*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count.

Main cities, FYI:

Wednesday 1 February 2023
San Francisco 1am
London 9am
New York 4am
Mumbai 2.30pm
Tokyo 6pm
Sydney 8pm

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before we can use as a reverse.

*Please add these to the Team Tracking Sheet. I will move them across to the master sheet, leave that to me. The "Tracking Sheet" you will use the most, best to save this on your browser for easy access.

For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour. You can ask us in this thread for our opinion, or use this colour tool: https://labs.tineye.com/color/ to get an idea. If in doubt, ask me or a co-captain.

* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

message 10: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2887 comments Hello everyone and thanks for being our captain, Paulette!
My name is Corina, originally from Romania (vampire land in books and movies haha) but have been living in New Zealand for the last 6 years.
I live on a farm with my husband and my 2 and a half year old boy. Luckily we are only 15-20 min from town, so not a long drive to work.
Last year was my first time playing UNO and loved it, so here I am again :) I read mostly fiction, quite a variety of genres.
2022 was an amazing reading year for me. I read the most books I've ever read and so many great ones, I can't choose just one :)
The Daevabad and Diviners series, Nettle and Bone, Cloud Cuckoo Land, The island of missing trees, The winners, Notes on an execution, Once there were wolves, Book lovers...too many haha
Here is the link to my UNO 2023 shelf:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
I'm lucky to already know Vanessa and Bella as we have been reading together on GR for a while now :)
Looking forward to meeting everyone else and having fun playing UNO this year.

Welcome Corina, great to hear you are back for another year of UNO! oh Im originally from NZ, what a great to live and for your son to grow up, I miss NZ.

Oh some great books there, I recently read Notes on an execution and loved it - such a great book, beautifully written.

Welcome to the team

Corina | 2887 comments Thanks, Paulette!
It definitely is a good way to grow up :)
At least Melbourne is not too far away ;)
Exactly...loved the writing and it was so engaging.

bookswithpaulette | 1625 comments I have posted our "Colour" cards for February here

If you have any books that might fit these cards, please post an image of the book and what card it might fit... as everyone checks in I can divy up the cards.

All the other cards, don't worry about those, just read what you want to read. We will allocate them to cards as you read them 😊

Access to the Team Spreadsheet and Tracking Spreadsheet is available
Here

message 14: by Corina (new)

Corina | 2887 comments Sounds good, thanks Paulette! Will have a look at matching the colour cards with books tomorrow :)
Do we request access to the tracking sheet to add the books there as well? or do we just post the books in this thread and you will transfer them on the sheet?

The tracking sheet, I have set up and it is ready for everyone to use. you will see the link in Message #5 here

You should be able to access no problems. Let me know if any issues, I have added a couple of books for Feb.

Look forward to seeing what covers you have that might fit our colour cards. I'll have a look at mine shortly too

I’m looking forward to reading some different books and having fun. 🥰

Hey Lauren,

Happy to see you on our team. Don't worry about the cards too much, once we start playing and you see the Tracking sheet getting filled in by the team it will all start to click into place.

You will never look at a book the same after playing UNO its a lot of fun

bookswithpaulette | 1625 comments I had a quick look of my shelves, I have a couple of books that might suit our colour cards.

The Girl in 6E (Deanna Madden, #1) by A.R. Torre - Red 1 (O: Setting - Oklahoma)

Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult - Blue 1 or 9 (O: character - Diana O'Toole or N: Setting - New York)

We do have two WD4 Cards (Duplicates for two colour cards) so if you also have books that fit these cards, please post them on here so I can see what everyone has and wants to read

message 20: by Faith (new)

Faith | 124 comments Hi! I'm Faith from Phoenix, Arizona. This is my 3rd year playing UNO and I love it!

My uno shelf is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I consider myself somewhat at the beginning of my reading journey. I'm still learning my favorite genres, authors, series, etc. That's one of the things I love about UNO, the exposure to many different books.

message 21: by Faith (new)

Faith | 124 comments Took a look at my shelves for color cards...

Claret and Present Danger (Literary Pub Mystery, #4) by Sarah Fox is #4 in the series

I have to return The Maid by Nita Prose to the library on 4 Feb. I don't think it will cover any of our red cards unless someone who has already read it knows something that not given in the summary. :)

Vanessa Menezes (vanessa_menezes) | 441 comments Heyya Everyone!

I'm so excited to meet all of u guys!

Its my third year playing this challenge n I had so much fun playing last two years that I signed up this year too inspite of being less free!

I am from India . I love reading but for few years it took a slight back seat as I shifted all my focus into my exams.

My favorite genre is Mystery & Thrillers. But I also love reading YA, Romance, General Fiction and Graphic novels (sad that they are not considered here!). There are a few authors whom I love and whose books I never miss out on. But I do enjoy discovering new books and trying out new genre. guys!!

I know Corina and Bella here!!! Thanks to them I have been able to read more books of different genre.

Looking forward to discover more books from you all.

message 24: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (teewho) | 195 comments Hey everyone! :D

Excited for another year of UNO, this will be my 5th year...I think, haha. This is definitely my favourite challenge on Goodreads.
I'm from New South Wales, Australia and hating summer. >.<

My favourite genre is Fantasy, Mythology and Mystery, basically anything that has a good adventure. I'll take all any and all recommendations (especially Mythology based!) My favourite author is Kerri Maniscalco.

Would love to hear everyone's favourite series/author :D

Look forward to the challenge with you all.

Oh, and I have a book for Green 4 that should work (hopefully?)

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, #3) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Abhipsa | 112 comments Hello everyone! I guess I am the last one to check in. I am from India. Uno got me into team challenge. I love UNO as a game itself. so when combined with reading, it’s the best thing ever. About me - mom to a 3 year old. hence reading has taken a back seat. But I am hoping this year will be better. I love to read anything and everything except may be non-fiction.

Hi Faith,

Welcome. The Maid is a great book for UNO, just doesn't fit the numbers we drew for Red this month. But it might fit our cards for March or April if you wanted to consider taking it out again.

Thank you for the Green 4 card.

Corina | 2887 comments Lovely to meet everyone :)

bookswithpaulette | 1625 comments What book is everyone thinking of starting the challenge with? Im thinking i might start with The Last Mrs. Parrish by Liv Constantine

But we still have a couple of weeks to go and Im a mood reader so it may change lol

message 39: by Ivelisse (new)

Ivelisse | 154 comments Hi everyone! I'm finally here! Sorry for the delay. I am usually super active during the day but because my work was hacked, they took away internet access for the next week and signal sucks!!!

I live in Dallas, TX... I'm an accountant to pay my book habit. Two kids who keep me super occupied during the weekend between baseball and soccer. I read romance (dark and light), historical fiction, horror, just about everything.

Some great reads off the top of my head:
Things We Never Got Over (Knockemout, #1) by Lucy Score Haunting Adeline (Cat and Mouse Duet, #1) by H.D. Carlton Pen Pal by J.T. Geissinger Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson

I have never played but am so excited. Everyone keeps talking about how much fun it is.

message 40: by Corina (last edited Jan 16, 2023 03:33PM) (new)

Corina | 2887 comments I've had a look through my owned books (shelves and kindle). Out of the coloured cards I didn't see mention yet, I found:

Blue 9
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
or
Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay

Yellow 6
The Murmur of Bees by Sofía Segovia
or
Yolk by Mary H.K. Choi

I have quite a few red ones, but couldn't find one for 5.

I'm kind of leaning towards starting with:
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
but I am a mood reader as well haha

I will try and update our tracking sheet today/tomorrow as well.

I keep needing to remind myself to hold off on the coloured covers until the challenge starts.
