Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments The Working Sheet
This post is all about our working sheet. The working sheet is where the majority of the Uno game will take place. This excel spreadsheet is how we will claim cards and fill out our completed books. This is separate from the official spreadsheet, so ever member is able to use this spreadsheet to your heart's content. There is only two columns that are captain only and that is the check mark columns "On SS" and "Member Shelf Checked" on the far right. These columns are grey instead of white.

My Basic Rules

I like to let you claim cards on our team working spreadsheet. I do put a limit to the number you can claim at a time to make sure everyone has a fair chance to claim cards, from the prolific readers to those who maybe don't read as quickly. Please, limit yourself to claiming only four cards at a time. You can claim more as you complete your cards, but only four uncompleted cards can be claimed at one time. The exception being color cards. I like for the color cards to all be claimed ahead of time, so if you have books that work for the color cards, then you are welcome to claim those in addition to the four basic cards you'd like to claim.

Below I will include the link to the working sheet. For the month of Feburary, I've already filled out a few cards as an example of how you should fill them out. If you have any questions about how it works, or how to fill out the spreadsheet please feel free to ask.

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Finally... Introduction!

And with all the rules and expectations posted, let's move on to the real introduction. Hello, I'm Sara. I will be your team Captain this Uno. A little about myself, this will be my 4th year playing Uno, my 2nd year as Captain. This is my favorite group game of the year and I look forward to it every year.

I like to read mostly fantasy and sci-fi genres, but I do read a little of everything. I love recommendations and will give anything a try. I'm from California and I'm 26 years old. I graduated from university last year, and I'm currently working in a rather boring job that I will no doubt complain about if you let me and trying to decide if I'd like to go to grad school. I also have two cats for reading companions! For Uno this season, I'm really hoping to finally get the chance to finish the Inheritance Cycle series.

Now that you know a bit about me, I'd love to know a bit about you. Here's the couple questions I'd like for you to answer:
- What's your name?
- If you've played Uno before or not.
- Book genres you enjoy.
- Anything you want to mention about yourself from your age, work, or school background. Whatever you want, have fun with this!
- Pets if you have any. Pets are the best!
- And what books from your TBR list you most look forward to reading during the Uno challenge.

Marie | 196 comments Hi everyone!
I'm Marie, I'm French and live in Switzerland.
I almost exclusively read fiction, mainly romance and crime, some YA.
It's my first UNO challenge and I will probably be a little lost (I'm famously useless with technology) Alyssa, Eli, Filipa and I teamed up for a reading challenge before and they're used to my being a bit clueless 😅
I created a new shelf for the challenge https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I'm looking forward to making new friends and discovering new books.

Im Rosina. i live in Calgary Alberta. Played uno a couple of times. One of my favorite team challenges.

I read a bit of everything but I enjoy fast pace page turners....

In a bit of a reading slum right now....

Fi | 182 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Filipa and I'm from Portugal. I've played UNO a lot. 😄 I read m/m romance, love fantasy, historicals and mystery but I read a little of everything.

Marie, always willing to be your tech support. 🤗

I'm really looking forward to Tavia Lark's Prince and Pawn and continuing the Game Changer's series so I can read The Long Game.

Sara, please ignore my access request to the spreadsheet, the link to our working SS is going to the official one I think.

message 11: by Eli (new)

Eli | 64 comments Hello new friends!!

I'm Eli, early 30s, also based in California and also with two cats 😊 Besides reading, I love playing board games and low-stakes video games, and recently have begun attempting to improve my cooking skills a bit (they were pretty nonexistent before, so the bar is low!)

I've done a lot of reading challenges over the past two years but this is my first time playing Uno. I mostly read queer fiction, mysteries/thrillers, paranormal, and more recently dipping my toes into horror. Anytime those genres are combined, it's almost definitely going to be a winner for me! I just bought a ton of books at the end of year Smashwords sale, so am excited to dip into those for this challenge, as well as my physical TBR which just seems to... magically continue to grow. Maybe will finally read the Raven Cycle series? Also looking to expand my horizons a bit so I'm excited to see what you all are reading!

message 12: by M (new)

M Beal | 317 comments Hello everyone. I am M and I live in Vancouver Canada (waves to Rosina Hello neighbor!) I am a loyal minion to me void overlord named Garrus after one of my favorite video game characters. I also do a lot of embroidery and sewing.

I have played Uno quite a few times and it is one of my favorite challenges. I mainly read Science Fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction but I am working on broadening my reading horizons.

This year for Uno will be an adventure since right in the middle of the challenge I am going back to school. May the force be with me. I don't have a TBR yet but I am working on one.

A fun getting to know everyone question:
Do you prefer coffee or tea? What is your favorite drink? I personally love any tea with ginger or lemon or cardamom milk tea.

Nope, I forgot to unlock it. Apologies. It should be open now to anyone who clicks the link to edit it. No need for editor requests.

message 14: by Denise (new)

Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 271 comments I'm Denise from California. I've played Uno several times in the past, but this is my first time as cocaptain.

I went back to school after 20+ years away, and I just graduated with my bachelor's degree in English literature, but so far, it's only on paper. I don't walk until May, but I plan on it.

Now that I've finished school, I am finding things to do to fill the time I had been using for homework and classes. I lost my excuses to stay in and read when my friends and family ask me to go places with them, so I'm struggling a bit.

I have two grown daughters who are still working on finding their ways through school and early job entry. We have 2 dogs and one of our cats recently passed. We have one cat and my daughter's boyfriend moved his cat in, but she hasn't quite made her place in the family yet. Our dog, Molly, seems to think that she's my dog and is my constant companion when I'm home. My kids have a selection of reptiles and such upstairs that I don't deal with. There are geckos and a bearded dragon and fish and frogs and whatnot.

I'll read just about anything with words. I am a polygamous reader, so I start a lot and read a little here and there and finish a lot of books all at once. I'm open to most genres, but, since I'm not reading for school right now, I find myself reading fluff and stuff that I don't need to think about much.

message 15: by alyssa (new)

alyssa (lastofthewilds) | 47 comments Hiya everyone, it's great to meet y'all! I'm Alyssa and I'm based in the US over on the east coast. This is my first time playing UNO and only my second team reading challenge, so don't mind me bumbling about for a bit at the start 😆 I read mainly MM romance and love a good mystery, but I am more than willing to delve into any genre as long as the premise piques my interest. I sadly don't have any pets, so reading has taken up the torch as my closest companion during the pandemic - nothing beats an audiobook when you're working remote! When I'm not reading, I dabble in languages, cooking, and gaming (RPGs are my fave). Can't wait to get started on conquering reads at the top of my TBR once February arrives!

@M's question: Fellow tea drinker here 👋 Green tea, herbal tea, black tea with milk and sugar, you name it! When I make the rare trip to a coffee shop, 99% of the time you'll find me falling back on my go-to chai tea latte order ☕

And I can't help but wish you an early congratulations on getting your hard-earned degree, @Denise - that's absolutely incredible! 🥳

message 16: by Sara (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments @M, I mostly drink energy drinks, but if I'm not drinking an energy drink, I prefer coffee. I only drink tea when I'm sick.

message 17: by Eli (new)

Eli | 64 comments Congrats on your graduations, Sara and Denise!! I can only imagine how much harder the pandemic made it to focus on school.

I love both coffee and tea! I think I have a slight preference for tea (especially iced tea) but if coffee is available I will always grab a cup.

message 18: by Denise (new)

Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 271 comments I tend to drink coffee in the mornings and tea in the evenings. For both, I don't put anything in it. The rare exception is a nonfat latte if I'm out and about.

message 19: by Marie (new)

Marie | 196 comments I drink green tea all through the day, I have a large collection and like to try out different flavours

Sara and Denise thats awesome that you managed to get those degrees done during the pandemic...

Off to check out the SS....have a good day everyone...

What book do you recommend that everyone should read?

Eli | 64 comments I've been wanting to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo for a while! Maybe I'll get to it with this challenge.

A few books I thought about for a long time after finishing (in a good way) were The Honeys, Keep This to Yourself, and Summer Sons. I think my favorite series of all time is The Spectral Files (the first one being P.S. I Spook You).

The Wicker King has been on my TBR for a while too! I'll check out These Violent Delights too. I had a hard time putting down Keep This To Yourself! Summer Sons is very weird and a bit abstract but I really liked it.

Andy (_btp) | 421 comments hi everyone, sorry, bit late checking in

I'm Andy, from Ireland, third time UNOer - love it

mostly reading fiction - fantasy, historical, sci-fi
add in some biography / memoir

not sure what I'll get to clear from TBR during Uno, mostly a library-based reader so whatever comes my way.

we've a 18 month old dog here, she's mostly still (still!) puppy energy, but has recently decided she will help out whenever she sees me sitting down to read

puppy reading time

message 31: by Marie (new)

Marie | 196 comments Awww she's so cute!!! You're very lucky to have help for your reading challenges 😆

message 32: by Denise (new)

Denise Lauron (dlauron) | 271 comments Welcome, Andy!

My daughter's dog is almost 5 and still has her puppy energy. She plays hard and sleeps hard. She also hogs the bed while she sleeps, but we're working on that.

message 33: by Eli (new)

Eli | 64 comments Welcome Andy! Your dog is adorable, I would be totally distracted all the time!

We still have tons of time left before we start but just wanted to let everyone know I have several books that work for all of the remaining color cards, but I already claimed one so wanted to give others a chance to claim the others if they want. But if it ends up being a struggle to fill any of them, I'm happy to do so!

And question about Reverse - is it supposed to be a book another team member read during the challenge, or anytime at all?

message 34: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 421 comments Eli wrote: "And question about Reverse - is it supposed to be a book another team member read during the challenge, or anytime at all? ..."

Hi Eli, I believe it can be book another team member read at any time - open to correction

message 35: by Sara (new)

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Andy is correct. The reverse card can be a book read by a team member at any time. So it doesn't have to be a book read during the challenge.

message 36: by Marie (new)

Marie | 196 comments Thanks Eli, I have a few coloured cards too if needed. I have marked a Wild draw 4 card with my name but I can help with more if nobody is interested.

message 37: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 421 comments what do you think is best option for identifying reverses
reader checks when they add a book if any of the team have previously read
or
if we notice a book added to sheet that we have read, then add note to that entry

message 38: by alyssa (new)

alyssa (lastofthewilds) | 47 comments Welcome Andy 👋 Your doggo is the absolute cutest - I don't know if I'd be able to focus!

With the reverse cards, I'll personally be combing through shelves and linking to a teammate's review of said book in the sheet. I already have my sights set on a few read shelves based on the reading preferences we shared above, and I'm sure I'll find plenty of new reads to add to Mt. TBR while exploring! But if you or anyone has any specific books in mind, maybe we can list them out here and double check with each other 😊

message 39: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 421 comments anyone have favourite books that are short but still meet the 100 page requirement for Uno, maybe between 100 and 150 pages?

some of mine:
Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan - (118p). This was one of my top books last year - very Irish so not sure if it's for everyone
What Willow Says by Lynn Buckle (118p).
All Systems Red by Martha Wells (144p) - book 1 of a fantastic series

hope everyone has great weekend

Sara Hollingsworth | 643 comments Hi everyone! Just wanted to say hello, happy start of the week, and remind everyone that we have roughly 8 days until Uno starts officially!

We have a few colored cards left open! I do like those to be picked ahead of time so if we could fill in those last few color cards that would be awesome.

We still need:
8 Yellow
4 Green
Wild Draw 4

message 46: by Andy (new)

Andy (_btp) | 421 comments would this work for 8 Yellow?
The Last Family in England by Matt Haig

looks yellow to me, and I'm assuming location will be England
just adding to my library reserve list now
