Important note
Some books on this list may not seem like the colour cover. This is because GR will show the default version. There may be a specific version that has been shelved that is the actual colour.

The version you read is what you should shelve, and is what counts, for UNO

message 11: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 748 comments Hi all, My name is Lexi (she/her/hers). I live in Northern Indiana (EST), and am in the 2nd year of my postdoc. I especially enjoy reading fantasy and sci-fi, and am trying to read authors from a wider range of countries. I have played and captained UNO before. I am currently getting my continuing education credits at a conference and off to lecture on diseases in free ranging and captive alligators that starts in three minutes.

Welcome to UNO and Team Lilac-breasted Roller.

Please introduce yourself (include your preferred pronouns), and if you have played UNO before. To get us started what are 3-5 books that you recommend to team mates. I'll start with Murderbot (the first books is All Systems Red) (I will recommend this series to complete strangers), The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet series, and the Penric's Demon series – I am doing a reread on audio right now before UNO starts.

Also, just a reminder that all books must be started after UNO starts, so you have about two weeks to finish anything you already started and read.

Please feel free to ask any question now and throughout. You can ask here in the thread or message me. I will add some books to the planning spreadsheet as an example once I get that set up in the next day or two.

Elen | 759 comments Hi everyone, welcome to Team Lilac BR!

I'm Elen (she/her/hers) from Estonia. This is my 6th time playing UNO and being co-captain. I really enjoy UNO for being a no-pressure challenge - perfect for the new year, and a lot of fun!
Right now, I read mostly thriller/mystery/crime, and a little bit of fantasy, and sci-fi. Previously fantasy was my main genre to read, but in the past two or more years, I have been in a fantasy slump.
2022 read books that I would recommend are: The Lost Village, Angels & Demons (whole series), Ragdoll (series), The Cruel Prince (series)

As Lexi said don't hesitate to ask questions, we are here to help. You can add your books here if the tracking spreadsheet is not for you or to the tracking spreadsheet.

Don't forget to add your UNO shelf.

My UNO shelf: uno-2023

message 13: by Silje (last edited Jan 17, 2023 12:42PM) (new)

Silje (sikna) | 913 comments Hi all, I'm so excited to play UNO this year with new and old friends on the team!

I'm Silje (she/her/hers) from Norway. I'm a dental hygienist, just started a new job this fall. Before that, I worked part-time in a bookstore while studying. I've also played UNO before, probably four or five times, and was a co-captain in some of them.

I dabble in many genres but tend to return to fantasy and romance when I want to read for comfort/pure fun. I have a few fantasy series that I re-read every two years or so, simply because I love the worlds and characters=)
I can recommend anything by the author Anne Bishop for those who like fantasy, Edenbrooke for historical romance lovers, and J.D.Robb's In Death series if you like futuristic crime with a healthy dose of romance and humor.

No questions are stupid, and if we're unsure about the answer, we can ask the other captains or the mods.

My UNO-shelf: uno2023

Ina ✨ (inaisreading) | 67 comments Hi everyone! So excited to be here :D

I usually go by Sunny (she/her), and I'm from Slovenia (so that would be CET, but I'm usually awake at all random and weird times). I'm currently still a student, in my 3rd year of Graphic Design (of a kind, hah 😅), and luckily I'm finishing my exam season on February 9th so there'll be all the time in the world to read 🥰

I've played UNO once before, I think in 2020 but then I took some time off to take care of my mental health! I mostly read fantasy, sci-fi, and an occasional thriller/historical fiction/mystery/romance. Overall, if it intrigues me, I won't have an issue reading it 😅

My current recommendations would be The Ten Thousand Doors of January (have read it twice and absolutely adored each time), the A Winter's Promise series, and The City of Brass series!

Here is my UNO shelf: uno-2023.

message 15: by Andrea (last edited Jan 17, 2023 06:00PM) (new)

Andrea (pilaryk2) | 134 comments Hello everyone,

I am Andrea (She/her), I am from Colombia (we are currently synced with EST). I am a process engineer within a small engineering firm where we build and install different equipment for food, pharma and chemical companies.
This is my third time playing UNO, it was the first team challenge I participated in and I loved it. These kinds of challenges have moved me to try different genres and discover new books, which is always great.

I read mostly Fantasy, Sci Fi and historical fiction, and from time to time I end up reading Sciency books when I find a topic that seems interesting.

For my fantasy recommendations I would say: anything by Brandon Sanderson, but just to get a feel for his style I would begin with The Emperor's Soul. I would also recommend Strange the Dreamer
which is beautiful and for some fiction I would go to The Shadow of the Wind which has some pretty nice quotes.

My UNO shelf is: uno-2023

Looking forward to playing alongside you all!

Denise (drams5) | 755 comments Edit: I didn't follow directions at all. I just started talking. I'll fix it. 😂

Hello everyone! I'm Denise(she/her) and I'm so excited to play uno this year! I think this is my 3rd year playing? Maybe 4th?

I live in the U.S. (Iowa) and work in a public library. It's a very bad job for keeping my tbr under control. I have three boys that all run in high school or college, so I spend a lot of time at track meets and running events. I'm not afraid to pull out my Kindle in the bleachers. 😂

I wanted to pop in and say hi, but I'm on my phone right now. I'll try to link my shelf...if I can't get it to work from the mobile site, I'll come back and fix it later.
My shelf: uno-2023

Looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Here are some book recommendations from me:
Mary Jane
Nothing to See Here
I love The Thursday Murder Club series (they're like The Golden Girls meet James Bond. I love the whole series).

message 17: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 755 comments Clarification Question:
So once the planning spreadsheet is up and running, we can start adding books we think we'll read/are planning to read, correct? Then we'll come back and enter the date finished after they are read AND move them to the uno shelf.

Will captains enter all the books from the tracking/planning sheet onto the official team sheet or do you want us to do that?

My book recommendations would be:
Red rising
The final empire
Gideon

Elen | 759 comments Denise wrote: "So once the planning spreadsheet is up and running, we can start adding books we think we'll read/are planning to read, correct? Then we'll come back and enter the date finished after they are read AND move them to the uno shelf."

Correct.

There are two ways to go: add books beforehand, then edit them as you read/finish. Or add only when you are done with the book.

Denise wrote: "Will captains enter all the books from the tracking/planning sheet onto the official team sheet or do you want us to do that?

Official SS is only for captains, so yes, we'll do it.

Ina ✨ (inaisreading) | 67 comments Added some books from my February TBR onto the planning sheet - I have one yellow cover that we can use (fits for Yellow 0 afaik) so I can prioritize that when February starts, and I'll most likely get to others as well sooner or later 🥰 I've been doing pretty good with my TBRs lately despite being a pretty big mood reader so I hope February won't be too much 😬

Are colour cards difficult to finish?

I also added some books to the planning, so far i have three books that I definitely will read.

message 29: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 748 comments Yellow tends to be the hardest cover color and then red/green. Blue never seems to be as much of an issue.

message 30: by Thirza (new)

Thirza | 43 comments Just added a book i thought was blue, but the site TinEyes says it is gray😅

message 31: by Lexi (last edited Jan 19, 2023 12:28PM) (new)

Lexi | 748 comments I use Tineye more for percent than the color. If it says grey, I am fine with blue but if it says 40% then I won't say it is 50%

message 32: by Susan (new)

Susan | 20 comments I'm Susan (she/her) and live in Louisville KY. I got involved in these challenges with my daughter Lexi and enjoy how it gives us books in common to talk about as well as book searches. I've done UNO once before.
My go to genres are mysteries, fantasy, science fiction and literary fiction as well as historical fiction. My favorite periods are Elizabethan England as well as late 19th and early 20th century. I am so over WWII I have to confess.

My favorite recent books are: The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton; Fight Night by

Hello! I have a few WWII novels I'd eventually like to read, but I got a little burned out on WWII, also. Someday I'll circle back around to them.

Along these same lines...I have this book here to read and would like to read it in Feb or March. Tin eye says it's orange, but it looks pretty yellow to me. I guess I could buy that it's light orange or orangish yellow. I'm fine either way, but curious what others think. Yellow enough?

message 44: by Denise (last edited Jan 20, 2023 08:14AM) (new)

Denise (drams5) | 755 comments Thanks for the feedback! It looks like Leslie Ann is planning to read the exact same yellow book for the 8 card. I'll hang on to mine and either read it as reverse or use it in March or for a mini. I'll plan to read for the yellow 2 though.

Also - a heads up that GR notifications are a little wonky again, Or at least they are for me. I'll try to just check this group every day, but I admit I normally rely on the notifications.

I liked the spooky, creepy stuff. But I do remember in maybe 7th(?) grade, a whole bunch of us read this little gem and thought it was the best book ever. Pretty sure we all ordered it from a Scholastic book flyer.
