Welcome to our inaugural BINGO Challenge. This is a year-long challenge that can be played in a variety of ways.

Regular: say BINGO! You’ve read books that fit in the 5 categories presented on the bingo card in a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line.
Blackout: BIGNO! Italian Bingo, you’ve read all the categories of books on the card.
Mix it up:( BONIG! Use the card as a way to inspire your reading life. Cross out as many categories of books that you’ve read which interest you.
Rules. There are not many…..
1. You can only use a book once. It can only be used for one category, even if it fits many.
2. The books need to be started and finished in 2023

This is the first time we have done this....I think your approach is good. I am thinking I am going to also aim for multiple Bingos - perhaps culminating in a 'blackout' where I have completed all categroies.

I think I'll start with
I1) Not set in the UK
I2) One word title - Ravished by Amanda Quick
I3) A theme that you rarely read
I4) A new release
I5) Features amnesia (real or fake)

My plan is to select and read these over the next 2 months

My first HR for the year was Ravished by Amanda Quick...so I have a quick win with the 'one word' title. An enjoyable read

I will put these underneath the tracking posts.
Some of the themes are a little obscure and harder to find (eg. grey eyed hero) but hopefully this can generate some discussion among the group.

There is no time period - readers can do this at their own pace. Some will likely just do a row or two and others may black out the whole card. If the latter is the case with a number of readers, then we could consider a second BINGO later in the year. As this is the first time we have done this......it is a learning process and we are kind of making it up as we go!!

Maybe I'm missing it, but I think there is "new author to you" but not "new author" in the categories? So if that's correct, then there is difference between "new author to you" and "debut novel."

But "new author to you" and "never read author" do seem very similar, and I think most people probably mean "never read anything by" when they say "new author to me."

But for the purposes of this challenge, I could interpret "new author to you" as referring to one that I've never heard of until at the time I decide to pick a book for that category and then I go look for names of HR authors I've never heard of before (maybe by looking at a list or online book access sites, or by wandering around in a library or bookstore for example) versus "never read author" could be one I'm very aware of but have never gotten around to reading anything by.

Just my 2 cents!

message 35: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 584 comments Thanks very much, Cath!

The idea of the "new author to me" being one I've never heard of before while the "never read author" being a familiar but unread author makes more sense. I'm going with that when deciding what to read!

Whoops.....my bad. 'New author to you' and 'Never read author' would be the same.
I am going to change G2 from "Never read author' to 'Hero or heroine have a child/children'.

'Debut novel' is the first novel written by an author.

Cam (no2camels) | 6 comments I just read "Imperfect Illusions" which is a M/M WWI Romance. It is also "fantasy" because the characters have magical talents, but the war background is pretty accurate. Was also a very quick read.

It checks a few boxes: not set in UK, theme rarely read, a kind of amnesia (though that may be pushing it), part of the book is "working class setting."
