The Challenge Factory discussion

There has been a resurgence in the last 10 years or so. Sewists from all over the world are bringing the art of quilting back to life.

One way for quilters to enjoy their hobby is to participate in a 'quilt along'. A typical quilt along involves a host posting on a blog or website a different tutorial each week or month that lets quilters at home complete a project by following along.

The Challenge Factory is hosting its first quilt along, and you're invited to join in. To create a beautiful project by the end of the month, you must read at least one book that is inspired by a classic quilt block.

Duration: January 1 - 31, 2023
No page limit.
You can repeat tasks as many times as you'd like.

January's quilt block - 9 patch block

The Nine Patch is a popular pattern used by pioneer women. The earliest homesteaders had neither time or fabric to spare. Most of the quilts they made were utility quilts, quickly sewn together for warmth.

The Nine Patch is one of the simplest and quickest quilts to sew, and because it was a good way to use up every small scrap of fabric available, it was used often.

On the prairie, sewing was an essential skill. Young girls learned to sew blocks before they learned to read. At an early age, often as young as 3 or 4, girls were taught to piece simple blocks such as the Nine Patch. Many were very skilled at piecing a block by age 5.

Edith White, who grew up in the mid-1800's remembered, "Before I was 5 years old, I had pieced one side of a quilt, sitting at my mother's knee half an hour a day. This training was called fireside training."
