Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 899 comments Hi Jonquil : ) I know we are in a group or two together and have only spoken in passing as we are updating challenges--but that was a long time ago lol. I'm super excited about getting to spend time with you in this challenge and really get to know you!! It's super crazy that we live in the same area!!!

I'm not necessarily the best about planning out my books...I kinda just work things in as I go lol but will get my post spell it out post ready to go before we start.

I hope you and yours are having a great holiday. It's unreal that Sunday will be Jan 1!!!

Jonquil | 290 comments Hi back at ya, Robin.
I couldn't tell from your page where you live.
I grew up in a Brooklyn neighborhood that the police were afraid to enter. I went to a college that required us to work in a coop every other quarter. I was looking for a place to live after graduation since I'd never been anywhere but NYC. I told my adviser I didn't want to be in a city (too hot for summer), or work with kids (been there, done that). He sent me to Vanderbilt Child Psychiatry in Nashville.
The night I arrived, my ride failed to show at the Greyhound station, the taxi driver tried to rip me off, and room where I would living for the next six months was closet-sized with a flea-covered mattress on the floor and rain pouring thru the ceiling onto the mattress. I knew that night that I was home. Nashville has changed A LOT, but I haven't found anyplace better, so here's where I'll die.

I don't have home internet. I go to the library branch across the street. So my response to posts may be slow.
Do you have a middle and last initial? That will bring us closer to reading an equal number of books.
I don't have cable, either, and I taught speedreading to government employees for decades, so I read an average of three books a day. Even so, it feels like I can't get to them fast enough. As a kid, I started reading my library books as I walked home from the library--dangerous on Brooklyn sidewalks, but a nice life skill. :)
I'm looking forward to the next 2 months.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 899 comments Oh wow Jonquil! Such an interesting story/memory of how you got to Nashville : ) I love it!! I live just south of you in Franklin. I was born in West Virginia and we moved here when I was around 7/8 yrs old. Although we have gone back to visit family in WV & OH through the years, it never felt like home. Like you, this is home. I've lived in Nebraska and South Carolina, but find myself right back here lol

No worries on your responses. I totally understand not having internet--it's so expensive, along with everything else these days. There's no better place to be but the library : ) and awesome that it's so close by you. We do have cable...for my mom and step dad...as they are the only ones that watch it. I don't have cable in my room but I don't watch tv anyways. It's rare if I do. I'd rather read or listen to audiobooks.

Yes, my middle name/initial is S(ue) and last name initial is J. So either way you work it out is fine by me or if you just read the 5 letters of my first name- that is ok too : )

On average, I listen or read about 2 books a day. So we are close on our daily reading. I bet that was a fun but possibly challenging job! I read slower than I listen lol Maybe I can pick up some speed reading tips from you. From one avid reader to another, I don't know if we will ever get to our books fast enough. The TBR grows way to fast--on a daily basis lol.

My main source for a lot of my books is the library. I currently have some library books that I've planned for other challenges that will work for your name, but those are subject to change. I enjoy the looking/planning aspect of the challenges. Even if I plan,I get side tracked and tend to read other books and slot them into challenges as I go.

I look forward to the next 2 months as well : ) I think this will be a super fun challenge especially when we get into the bonus tasks.

I always get sidetracked by the covers of "similar books" at the bottom of the Overdrive page. I right click something that looks interesting and it has covers at the bottom of its book page and I right click those interesting ones and before I know it I have 25 windows lined up in my address bar.

message 9: by Jonquil (last edited Dec 29, 2022 06:41AM) (new)

Jonquil | 290 comments The first groups I joined didn't require you to preselect your books for challenges and I was always surprised at how rarely I had to search for a last book or two for the obscure ones -- usually "title that starts with..."

Now I add every book (title) that starts with a vowel, Q, X and Z to my Overdrive and library website wish list. The only downside is the webpage only advances to page seven so I end up jumping 2 screens at a time to get to the book titles that begin with "o".
Not complaining!! I can recall standing in front of the "O" drawer of the Nashville downtown Ben Allen Library flipping through the card catalog before we automated/computerized. I just flashed on a memory of the barcode strips hundreds of volunteers made for the back cover of the library's books on TYPEWRITERS.

My Australian groups challenges require us to preselect our books. Even then, I usually end up switching one or two each month.

When I participated in The Seasonal Reading Challenge, I used a color-coded spreadsheet to plan and track my books. Starting with my 2nd seasonal challenge I read the books in order, so I had a column that told me when to place the hold at the library. I am a major Introvert. When it appeared that I was again about to be the first finisher of The Seasonal Reading Challenge I just stopped. I really prefer quietly reading in the background. I've tried a few small group team challenges but even that feels like standing on stage in front of the whole school. So I hear my mother's voice (major Extravert) to get out there. I try again. Then I quietly withdraw again. Funny how a team reading group can feel so public and exposed.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 899 comments Oh my..I remember when using Overdrive you could select the letter of the alphabet you wanted to search...by title or author. That's a function that I miss. YESS!! I recall standing in front of the card catalog at Williamson County Public Library, my local library. I use the Nashville Public Library as well, Edmondson Pike Branch--it's the closest one to me. Some day, I will visit the main branch of the NPL. It's amazing how technology has advanced. I haven't thought about a TYPEWRITER in years. I'm not sure if we had to revert back to some of those older ways of doing things that I would even remember how to use the equipment or how to do it.

I would probably struggle with your Australian groups challenges LOL I can plan but generally switch things around multiple times. I think MOST of the challenges I do, you can preplan or not. I have seen a few where preselecting is part of the fun of the challenge.

The SRC is probably the only challenge that I stick with planned books because those tasks are strictly moderated and a little harder sometimes to find books that work. That's probably my favorite challenge of all of them. I was the first finisher last season. I'm challenged when it comes to using spreadsheets. I have a private group here on GR that I use to plan/track all the groups and challenges I participate in. A little old school but me and a SS just don't get along to well. I'm a little intimidated by them but a lot of readers LOVE to use them.

I'm an introvert as well, but most people that meet me aren't aware that I am. I'm a major homebody and prefer to be alone doing my own thing. I hate crowds or large gatherings and avoid them as much as possible. But I can function and do what I have to do when in the large crowd/gathering situations EXCEPT give group or public speeches. Forget that, I refuse lol.

In the past, I've mainly just done Individual challenges and the SRC. I'm starting to participate in a few team challenges. So far, I've been on teams that aren't super active. I read my books, log them in, ask what questions I need answered comment a little here and there and keep reading.

A few years ago, I left all my groups here on GR. Life in general kept me from being active in challenges and my reading slowed down quite a bit, so I just left all the groups. I kept using GR to track my books and to keep up with books in general. The last year or so I started joining some groups again and participating in challenges. The SRC was the first one I rejoined. So I totally understand quietly withdrawing--I do it too! Yes, now that you say that, team reading groups can feel public and exposed.

Jonquil | 290 comments I have my mother's sense of direction. She was a native New Yorker. Having walked from Fifth Avenue to Seventh Avenue, you could ask her to point toward Sixth Avenue and she just couldn't. Why am I mentioning this? Several times I have stumbled across the Edmondson Pike Branch on the way between Davidson and Williamson and it was a surprise each time. I also occasionally shopped near there, that being the only Kohls in Nashville. I figured since I was so close, I'd drive to Edmondson Pike to see if they had things my branch didn't. Got lost every time. Just say "Central Pike" and watch my blood pressure climb.

Jonquil | 290 comments I am loud and talk with my hands (see above about New York) and people have actually ARGUED with me about being an Introvert. I explain what that actually means trait-wise and they tell me I'm wrong.
Ironically, I facilitated in-service seminars for decades to supplement my salary. The clock would strike 9AM and it was TADAH!!!! Then I would go home and curl up under my quilts in the dark and silence and try to recover.
I have a gutter that needs a few nails and I am gathering the strength to get on a ladder where passersby can....OMG...see me. Hopefully I'll let you know how it went later today or tomorrow.

I have a decent sense of direction. I try to remember "landmarks" to help me return to places that I don't visit often or in case I do get lost/turned around. Map reading, driving directions and such has never been a strong point. Thank goodness we now have our phones to give us directions without looking at a map. My BFF lives in Lebanon and I know how to get to her house and I know how to get around Lebanon a little. But when we are talking she will say "You know, over by/off of Central Pike", ummmm no I don't, but ok, and pretend like I do LOL

YAS!! I get that nonsense as well about introverts. But it's ok...just carry on your way and let me be lol I still do that sometimes....curl up in my bed, with all my blanket/pillows, in silence, and recover.

Ummm, I hope you got that gutter fixed ok. I have issues with heights and ladders, much less the passersby. I would definitely not be doing that myself.

Happy New Year!!! I spent the evening at home. I took my mom to the rehab center where my step-dad is so she could visit for a while. My oldest son lives here as well, and we all just relaxed and did whatever we wanted to. His girlfriend was here too. They watched football, my mom played her computer games, and I read. We cooked tacos and Rotel dip for dinner. Not too much excitement. My youngest son, DIL and grandkids went to one of DIL's sisters house to spend the night. I was invited to go but I just wasn't in the mood lol I hope you had a quiet pleasant evening/night as well.

Jonquil | 290 comments Happy 2023 to you as well!

Sounds like a nice New Year's evening.

I am a homebody for all holidays. I did more when I was younger and people my age were expected to do what other 20/30/40 year-olds were supposed to do. But it became simpler to start my own homebound traditions. I realize that 75% of the population identifies as Extraverts (I used to do seminars on Myers-Briggs) but even I was fascinated by people's reactions to staying at home in 2020. I understand the pain Extraverts feel when they can't connect and I felt so sorry for them. But it was a peaceful, quiet and cozy respite for me.

What kind of computer games does your Mom play? I listened to my last few 2022 books and played Queens Garden Christmas a match-3 game purchased from Big Fish Games before they went off the rails.

Jonquil | 290 comments I didn't quite finish the gutters. It's surprising how time consuming it is to clean and repair a 20 inch section at a time interspersed with repeatedly moving and lining up the ladder.

I am also less than happy about heights, but in quirky ways. I had no trouble looking out the windows on the top floor of the World Trade Center. But I'm terrified of driving over causeways over water in Florida (though I must be snippy and say Florida drivers make Nashvillians look like professional drivers.) I am fine on elevated trains with closed doors but incapable of standing on the platform of an elevated train station. Even staircases without risers (open backs between the stairs) make me swoon.

I won't go near an extension ladder, but feel relatively safe on a sturdy stepladder as long as my chest isn't higher than the platform at the top of the ladder. Perceived danger/safety is a funny thing. I'm sure I look bizarre climbing because it's right foot step one, left foot step one. Breathe. Right foot step two, left foot step two. Breathe. Right foot step three, left foot step three. Stand perfectly still. Don't look down. Slow breaths. Say a pray. Slowly reach up to clear the leaves with right hand while holding on to ladder with left hand.

I hope to finish the remaining 10 foot run on Monday before the rain starts.

Yeah, I'm a homebody for all holidays too. I love my grandchildren and LOVE to be there with them, but on the other hand, a lot of the time, I just don't want to go through the motions of getting dressed, driving the 45 mins to an hour drive to Dickson, hanging out, and the drive home. But, it's also quiet here at home. Right now, it's just me, my mom and oldest son. Even when my step-dad is here, it's quiet. I stay in my room where all my stuff is, my son stays in his room with all his stuff, my mom usually watches tv in the living room or is in dining room/kitchen area on her computer, and step-dad stays in parents room watching tv. LOL I'm glad you had a quiet and peaceful New Year! I've been listening to some audiobooks too.

My mom plays slot games & bejeweled type games. She is vision impaired--legally blind-- so she can't really see well enough to play a lot of different games. Plus, she isn't willing to learn or try. She's really a lot to deal with. Very juvenile in her ways. That's a GREAT big can of worms.

I remember Big Fish Games lol I play games too. A lot of match 3 games and other various ones that I find. I never stay with one for long until I'm playing another. I play some games on Mistplay.

The "O" book I read for your name--hmm let's say I borrowed it from Overdrive, started listening to it, got interested and THEN realized it was book #11 in a series. : / I prefer to read a series in order, but didn't know it until I was almost done with it and looked it up on GR.
So now I'm on hold for book #1 LOL

OMG IF I have to climb a VERY short ladder, I climb it exactly like you. But I'm not climbing any ladder where I am more than 3-5 ft from the ground. I'm glad you did ok and making progress.

When we stayed in Gatlinburg we were in some apartments that they rent out. We were on the 3rd floor and I had trouble looking down when we were out on the balcony. I think maybe because it was very small. Now in an enclosed area, like a hotel room, I'm ok looking out the window from many stories up, but if I was outside in the open, I couldn't do it. I also have that same issue in an open/outside stadium, but not so much in an indoor auditorium. My youngest son is the same way. It's crazy how our minds react to those situations.

It's 4:30 in the morning and I really should be sleeping. I've been reading and catching up on GR and cat napping. Today, my oldest son will be off from work because the holiday fell on a Sunday. I will have to take my mom down the street(3 min trip) and drop her off to visit with my step-dad around 11 am. Go back and pick her up some time between 2-4 pm. Other than that, I don't think there's any big plans for the day.

I hope you get some reading time in and enjoy what you are reading. I did get some books finished that I need to log in. I also need to do a lot of challenge updates that I let fall behind.

Have a great day and looking to hearing back from you soon!

This reminded me of TPAC. Have you ever been in the their balcony?
The first row has a low rail so the people sitting there can see over it. That means it's about knee high when you're standing, Since they serve alcohol I'm amazed no one has ever gone over the rail into the laps of the people below.

Let's erase that image with a positive one. A friend had Broadway at TPAC season tickets and her husband had no interest in seeing My Fair Lady so she invited me. We were waiting as the last group of people filed in and a man in the third row stood up next to his companion. He started to sing Happy Birthday and in a classic Nashville moment everyone in the auditorium joined in. When we got to the birthday boy's name everyone paused in anticipation and the instigator sang out even louder and we all followed suit. Only in Nashville.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 899 comments Good Morning!!!

I have been to TPAC, but it's been quite some time ago. Yikes, that's a really low railing.

LOL very classic Nashville moment for the whole auditorium to start singing. I can hear everyone singing and then all of a sudden pause at the name, but can also hear someone inserting something else like "birthday boy" or "mister" in place of the name.

Speaking of plays--I used to love to go to Chaffin's Dinner Barn. So sad that after 53 years it closed. Such a fun place to eat and see great plays. I haven't been to see a play in many many years. Just something that I never really had the time to get out and go do.

Yay!! I bet you are! I haven't been doing much. I was sitting here thinking I would really like to do some deep cleaning and rearrange my room. It's been quite a while since I've done it, but it's a lot of work. It takes me a couple of days. Just don't know if I have the motivation and energy to get started. I also need to clean out some dresser drawers & junk drawers, as we like to call them--those ones that are just a catch all for everything. We'll see if I do it or not lol

I hope all is going well for you. I've haven't been feeling well. Not really sick, just not feeling myself, if you will. So I've just been taking it easy and getting some reading done and just the necessary every day chores.

I have several books on the go and hope to finish up a lot of them by the end of the week. I need to find my J and Q books. I'm over half way through my L book and started my N book. Hopefully by the end of the day I will have one if not two of them completed : )

Jonquil | 290 comments I'm sorry that you've been under the weather. Nerd fact: we really are affected by the air pressure, humidity and temperature. Talk to Californians about the Santa Ana winds. Some of us are more susceptible to specific changes. And the impact of light deprivation has been a media darling for the past few years. It's possible these powerful fronts have been causing you to react.

Personally, I think cold, short winter days are the perfect opportunity to hunker down. Drink that tea you forgot you like. Read books you wouldn't want the librarian to see. Accomplish nothing all day long. There's a reason Spring cleaning is "spring" cleaning not summer scrubbing or winter uncluttering. They sell all those organizing and storage devices in January. I was in Walmart today and the storage containers were stacked in the aisles where the Christmas stuff was last month.

Whatever you are motivated to do or not do, enjoy it!

I also used to teach organizing classes. They were third in popularity after 1- Self Esteem and 2- Stress Management. Says a lot about our culture (but enabled me to pay my heating bill).

I read your N and liked it, hope you are enjoying it. Adding book 3 to my TBR since the series seems to have fallen off my radar.

Thank you! I have muscle, bone and joint issues as well as a plethora of other medical issues and I definitely think you "nailed it" I'm not sick as in cold, flu, or other illness per se, but just an overall body feeling of not feeling well...nothing specific.

I love breathing in the cold crisp fresh air, but my body says stay under those covers and stay warm. During these days, if the only accomplishments I make are finished books, I'm happy with that.

They have the marketing for those storage containers and devices timed just right. Right after Christmas when people are packing away decorations, making space for all the unnecessary gifts and preparing for spring cleaning.

The most motivation I've had so far has only been the brain power to think it all through lol It's such a big chore. I just can't stand clutter. Although I keep everything neat and organized, it's a challenge sometimes when all your belongings are in one room. I'm one of those people that likes to move the furniture around to change the look/feel of a room every few months. PLUS the cleaning aspect of it.

I hope this finds you doing well. This weather is a little strange for us. It's nice, but I'm wondering if mother nature is up to some sort of trickery for the nasty icy cold days to come. I can't imagine it staying this way up until spring.

I really enjoyed my "N" book. I will continue with the series.

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 899 comments I think our next step is to post our spell outs here in theCheck in thread and get other tasks we can work on. I will post our completion post links there and see what happens : )

I LOVE THIS!! How delightful! It's like have a city house and a country house and a hideaway without the stress of movers and vans!

The closest I ever get to this is changing out my quilt. The October one has stars and eyes that glow in the dark.

Of course, I already told you, lol but I live south of Nashville in Williamson County. Franklin is a very historic town. The Battle of Franklin was fought here so lots of Civil War historical sites.

For this task, I will probably read:
Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics
Dolly Parton, Songteller My Life in Lyrics by Dolly Parton

In this memoir, Dolly talks about her home in Brentwood TN, growing up in the mountains of East TN, Nashville, and Dollywood located in Pigeon Forge in East TN.

I'm always struggling when some variation of this task pops up LOL It seems I've read a lot of the books the local authors have written like Robert Hicks, Tamera Alexander, Ann Patchett and the handful of others.

Due to my limited storage space, I don't keep many quilts. I would love to change them out based on the season. Some day, I will take that on. I LOVE the description of your October quilt. I would stay in the dark all the time just to see the eyes LOL

My grandmother stored them flat between the mattress and boxspring. Strangely it protects them as well as stashing them away.

Amanda (porkchop0911) | 807 comments Totally crazy and off the wall question!!

Would you rather be reincarnated as a cat or dog?

Task: Read a book with a dog/cat on cover or mentioned in the book (read for what your partner chooses

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) | 899 comments Ok Jonquil LOL

I'm an animal lover with the exception being snakes....YIKES!!! Snakes are probably the one thing that I fear more than anything else. Dead or alive, it's still a snake.

Although I like cats, dogs are my favorite. Prefer big dogs over little dogs. Looks like you get to read a book with a dog on the cover or in the book : )

I really don't have a preference, both have pluses and minuses, so I'm staying neutral and letting the reincarnation dice fall as they may. Since Robin expressed an interest in dogs over cats, she gets to read the dog option.

I will be reading Guardian K-9 on Call Linda O. Johnston

YAY!!! You're too kind : ) I love dogs. I lost my great dane/pit bull mix November 10th 2020. And then lost my bull mastiff September 9th 2022. I feel so lost without them : (

Aaawww, I'm so sorry Robin. The house must seem so empty without them, especially since dogs that large never quite understand that they are not truly lap dogs. I hope flashes of memory warm your heart at surprising moments.

Thanks! I do think about them often. I have considered adopting another dog, but I'm having mixed emotions about that. It's a big responsibility, but also very rewarding and lots of company!

Amanda (porkchop0911) | 807 comments Happy Weekend guys!!

Question 3

What is your favorite decade?

Task: Read a book that was set in your partners favorite decade.

message 47: by Jonquil (new)

Jonquil | 290 comments Hmmmm, this is hard. For everything that made me feel warm and fuzzy there were dark and unfortunate things.
I'm going to ignore what was happening in the world during any decade and go with architecture, furnishings, clothing, jewelry, and crafts. That puts me in the 1920s.
I checked Listopia and found many lists for set in the 1920s.
Hope you can find something you'll enjoy, Robin.

Wow!! This is crazy lol The SRC is themed the 1920's this season. So I thought, I like the 1850's up to present day but really enjoying the books I've been reading for the SRC set in the 1920's, so I'll pick that decade for Jonquil.

And BINGO!!! Look what you picked : )

So go ahead and read the 1920's as well!!!

Jonquil | 290 comments Terrific, that worked out well!

I got excited about several books only to find that they were previously Overdrive books but the leases had expired - yank away that football!!
On my 8th attempt, I located A Medal for Murder by Frances Brody. I clicked that "borrow" button somewhat aggressively but I'm all set.
