I've never read a graphic novel so I was wondering if there were any of you out there who could recommend a sort of beginner or introductory graphic novel? I considered reading The Watchmen and have it also serve as a book that was published the year I was born (1986). Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Watchmen is a pretty heavy start for a newbie. There are loads of good comic books out there. I'm hardly a big comic book reader, but I've found it easy to read several wildly different books. The one I read for this challenge was Sex Criminals, which was both funny and thought-provoking, and it had beautiful art too. But yeah, I wouldn't start with Watchmen. I've read that one and it's pretty damn heavy, although it's fantastic. What genre would you like to read?
Honestly, I don't know much about graphic novels at all. My favorite genres to read are sci-fi, mystery/thriller, fantasy, and historical fiction. If it helps any further, My favorite authors are Orson Scott Card, James Rollins, Kurt Vonnegut and Christopher Moore. I own almost every single book published by Orson Scott Card and James Rollins, haha, they take up almost 3 shelves in my book case.
Hmm, I'm not a huge help but the one that I keep hearing good things about is Saga which is sci-fi but there are so many more.I am working my way through Sandman (it's all Neil Gaiman's fault that I've even read a graphic novel!) but I've also read a couple more here and there Sex Criminals is great & I really enjoyed The Wicked + The Divine.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to look further into all of them. I really like Neil Gaiman so I could give Sandman a try. Also, the cover I saw for The Wicked + The Divine is beautiful and that could fulfill the category to pick a book based solely on the cover.
I'm reading The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle (the graphic novel) because it's one of my niece's all time favorites.
I recommend Saga and Y: the Last Man. However, there are so many different genres of graphic novel now that you can try just about anything. Lots of non-fiction now too!
One of the best I've ever read is "My Friend Dahmer," written by a high school acquaintance of Jeffrey Dahmer. Fascinating!
