Tastes So Sweet (The Everheart Brothers of Texas #3) - Kelly Cain 3/5
Hoopla Audio.
I'm a rule-follower to the core so when someone breaks the rules, I can't back them. Even in a book. If there is a no-fraternization policy, there is a no-fraternization policy! I couldn't support this 'ship so that detracted from the book.

The Rejected Writers' Christmas Wedding (Southlea Bay #3) - Suzanne Kelman 4/5
Kindle Unlimited.
A cute if sometimes annoying end to the Rejected Writers of Southlea Bay. I feel like every time I read another book, I was annoyed. Some of the antics in this trilogy go too far. Poor Flora, my goodness. And aside from the twins' doorbell chime, you'd never know this was set around Christmas so that was a little disappointing. But I really enjoy most of these characters and I will miss them!

Why We Fly - Kimberly Jones & Gilly Segal 2/5
Hoopla Audio.
I'm just the latest in a string of disappointed readers after finishing this book. I can only reiterate what other reviewers have said; it started out strong, it had something to say, and then it got caught up in high school and completely flopped. After someone got suspended, the sole Black participator, NOTHING HAPPENED. What the hell? I was expecting so so much more commentary on racism, social justice, etc and absolutely nothing happened. I was and am a firm supporter of Colin Kaepernick's actions when he knelt during the national anthem during a 2016 football game and I'm so unbelievably disappointed that this book petered out.

Strike the Zither (The Three Kingdoms #1) - Joan He 4/5
Won Finished Hardcover from BookishFirst.com!
I had never heard of The Three Kingdoms until reading Joan He's Author's Note at the end of Strike the Zither. So this is a retelling of The Three Kingdoms with females reimagined into most of the male roles and a couple of pivotal points changed. But it's all new to me! I didn't have a hard time getting into this book at all. I settled right into the story of Zephyr, strategist to Xin Ren. What threw me was what came halfway through! What a twist! It got so much more interesting and fantastical when the twist happened. I have no idea what will be coming in the next books, there was so much swapping sides and backstabbing in this one. I don't think I'll be seeking out The Three Kingdoms so the rest of the series will be a nice surprise to me. I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to the second one, Sound the Gong! I'm excited for the cover reveal because the cover of Strike the Zither is so beautiful!

The Christmas Box (The Christmas Box Trilogy #1) - Richard Paul Evans 4/5
Home Library Hardcover.
A sweet Christmas story about how family comes first. I'm not religious and apparently this book is not very Christian even though it's been touted as Christian fiction, whatever. That's not why I read it. I enjoyed it for the simplicity of the message that family is more important than anything else.
6.
Timepiece (The Christmas Box Trilogy #2) - Richard Paul Evans 4/5
Home Library Hardcover.
A heartstring tugger for sure. Much less religious in all aspects than The Christmas Box but no less full of lessons to be learned. A sweet, sad story, the love story of David and MaryAnne and sweet little Andrea, that, really, is a prequel to The Christmas Box.

The Honeys - Ryan La Sala 4/5
Hoopla Audio.
What the hellllll?? Parts of this gave me chills, damn!! Creepy AF! I will forever be scared of bees now. 🤣 I think the ending lost it, or me, a little bit but overall I really enjoyed this book. The narrator was excellent and I loved the added sound effects. Made me a *little* paranoid! I didn't really know what it was about going into it, like most books I read, and I highly suggest it because WOW you are thrown into the deep end! It's a dramatic first chapter! And the drama continues throughout.

So, This Is Christmas - Tracy Andreen 4/5
Home Library Paperback.
So. Darn. Cute! I've had a string of bad luck with closed door romances, adult and YA, for like months. I thought maybe it was me, maybe I just needed more from my romances. But no! It's them! Because this was so cute. The cover is adorable and so pink. The pages have snowflakes lining the bottom. Oh and the story was just the Christmas story I needed! Dislike to like, a smidgen of fake dating, it was just adorable and so fun. I'm so glad I read it, it warmed my heart. I don't even think it needed a sequel? But I will be reading it because we really didn't get enough of Barrington Academy!

Sunrise (Ashfall #3) - Mike Mullin 4/5
Libby E-Book.
There is no need for Blades of Spring. If you're afraid of this series not getting an ending because the 4th book isn't out, don't worry. Read this series anyway. It's not needed! There is a conclusion in this book. It got really dark but there is a sunrise.
10.
Darla's Story (Ashfall #0.5) - Mike Mullin 3/5
Kindle.
This wasn't needed at all. It gave me nothing to add to the Ashfall trilogy story.

You Can't Touch My Hair: And Other Things I Still Have to Explain - Phoebe Robinson 3/5
Audible.
I enjoy comedians' books and I knew Phoebe Robinson was a comedian so when this was a Daily Deal in 2021, I nabbed it. Welllllll, it was fine. It wasn't great. I'm not familiar with 2 Dope Queens so I have no relation to Phoebe Robinson. Some parts were funny but she's kind of annoying? Sorry. I enjoyed parts of it, good points were made, but ultimately it was pretty mediocre.

Contact - Carl Sagan 2/5
Home Library Hardcover.
Brevity? Who is she? Conciseness? We don't know her. This was boring and rambling. I quickly switched to the audiobook because I was getting glassy-eyed trying to read it. It's just...not interesting. To me. The movie was pretty boring too (saw it probably 15 years ago) and it turns out the ending points are very different between the movie and the book. And I just didn't care for the religious explanation. The characters were so flat, Ellie was so dull.

Yeah, I wanted to like it because...Carl Sagan. Can you even be a fan of science and science fiction if you don't admire everything about him? Turns out the answer is "Yes." Because I did not like this book at all. Had some interesting ideas but didn't do a great job explaining them, IMO.

New Kid (New Kid #1) - Jerry Craft 5/5
Hoopla E-Book.
Great. Just great. Jordan is Black and hasn't hit his growth spurt yet and is starting a new school with a LOT of white people. Jordan has a lot on his plate. This graphic novel shows what Jordan, and a lot of children of color go through and deal with on a daily basis. It was refreshing and eye-opening and kids and adults alike of all races should be reading this. Together if you are a parent. It's easy enough to understand for even elementary school children. Loved it.

The Letter (The Christmas Box Trilogy #3) - Richard Paul Evans 3/5
Hoopla Audio.
Nah this was not needed. Because it wasn't enjoyable and heartwarming. It was upsetting and miserable! The Christmas Box should have been the third book in the trilogy because it is, chronologically. And this should have been the second book. But it was just upsetting.
I realized my books were out of order because I hadn't written 2 reviews yet...and then I realized who cares? 🤣 Freeing.

Within These Wicked Walls - Lauren Blackwood 4/5
Home Library Hardcover.
I really enjoyed this Jane Eyre retelling! It was familiar and new at the same time. I loved the dusty, hot setting of the deserts of Ethiopia (I think it took place there but it was never specifically said). I loved how the house was a character and how well it was done. I went back and forth between the hardcover and the audiobook but enjoyed reading it more than listening to it, though the narrator was very good. But this is a book you want to sink your teeth (eyes) into! I would've liked more time spent on the debtera, besides Andromeda and Jember, and more about the Evil Eye but overall, really enjoyed this one. Looking forward to Blackwood's next book!

Another Dimension of Us - Mike Albo 2/5
Won Finished Hardcover in a Goodreads Giveaway!
Umm hmm. This was something else…and unfortunately not very good. It was messy, it was confusing. It had a lot of interesting potential but it was like two stories were being told at the same time, fighting for the spotlight. They just didn't mesh well together. When they were in the astral plane, it was like what absurd things can I think of to be weird and stand out? ...list... I wanted to like it. I liked Renaldo and Tommy. And I feel like it was not nearly enough in the future for what this future in 2044 was imagined to be. And the astral projection was...there was no explanation. It was supernatural. Time travel would have been better. But again, not in 2044, just 21 years from now.

Simply Julia: 110 Easy Recipes for Healthy Comfort Food - Julia Turshen 4/5
Home Library Hardcover.
I love reading cookbooks. Like actually reading through each anecdote, all the ingredients, every step of every recipe. I discovered Julia Turshen last year from someone I follow on Instagram. I tabbed up this cookbook like mad. I've owned it for about a year and have made several dishes from it. I'll be going through and making more, I like to cook my way through each cookbook (based on my tabs, not every single recipe) and I will try to remember to keep updating this review!
Update 2/21/23: I have lowered my rating to 4 stars. I don't like that there are no total times on recipes, you have to read through and add it all up. Makes it harder. Lack of photos as well. And I'm nearing the end of what I was interested in cooking and it's about a quarter of the recipes. Also portions are large. Serves 4 is more like serves 6! We are only 2!
I've made:
Stewed Chicken with Sour Cream & Chive Dumplings. Delicious. A good Sunday meal.
Jody's French Lentil & Kale Stew I added spicy Italian sausage to this. Not my favorite but not bad.
Kitchen Sink Frittata. Not my favorite but not bad.
Sesame Rice Bowls with Tofu, Quickles, & Peanut Sauce SO GOOD!! And easy (for me). A definite repeat.
Sizzle Burgers over Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes with Matchstick Carrot Salad. I used ground turkey. Very good. A definite repeat.
Arayes with Yogurt Sauce. Didn't buy lean ground beef so this was greasy and sogged up the pita. Also didn't grill it, went with the cast iron skillet option and that didn't cook the meat before the pita darkened so I put them in the oven and that made the pita soggy. Next time I will make the meat beforehand and drain it, then fill the pita and broil them. Taste was good!!
Ratatouille & Ricotta Pasta Bake. I halved most everything because we're only 2 people. Low on the eggplant, low on the cherry tomatoes as we don't really like both too much (cooked tomatoes blech) but I did not halve the ricotta so this was nice and cheesy and creamy! Yum! But I probably won't make it again anytime soon.
Carrot & Chickpea Korma. Who needs meat? Who needs dairy? This was delicious!! I added frozen peas and ACCIDENTALLY added chili pepper paste (TWO TABLESPOONS) instead of tomato paste! 🤣 It was hot! But very tasty! Amore pastes all look identical and I bought the chili pepper paste instead of the tomato paste.
Turkey Shepherd's Pie. Yum! Loved the potato/cauliflower mash mix. Definite repeat.
Creamy Roasted Tomato & Orzo Soup. Yummy! I love a good tomato soup and the added orzo was perfect. Made grilled cheese as well. Definite repeat.
Roger's Jambalaya. Delicious! Excluded the shrimp and only used one green pepper. Very good! Needs pita for sopping up juices. Definite repeat.
Italian Sausage, Farro, & Tomato Stew. Tasty. Used quinoa instead of farro. Worked well! Also used crushed tomatoes instead of diced and spicy sausage. Definite repeat but less kale.
Zucchini, Green Olive, & Feta Fritters with Palm Springs Pearl Couscous & Citrus Salad. Delicious! Will definitely make again. Maybe not together every time but they did complement each other.
Asparagus & Snap Peas with Peanuts & Basil. I did make the zucchini fritters again and made this with it. This little cold salad was so good!! Will definitely make as a side again.
Breakfast Nachos. Made for supper. The only thing that makes these "breakfast" is the scrambled eggs on top and you can do that for any meal anyway! A lot of nachos but super tasty. Definite repeat.
Sweet & Salty Sesame Peanuts. Hubs loved these! A yummy snack.
Coconut Marble Loaf. Soooo good!! Hubs wants this as his birthday cake! lol.
Spinach & Artichoke Dip Chicken Bake with Buffalo Brussels Sprouts. Threw this over white rice. Liked that vs noodles and kept separate for leftovers so the sauce didn't get absorbed. Probably won't make again anytime soon but the Brussels sprouts were delicious.
Sticky Chicken. Served over white rice and steamed broccoli with leftover gorgonzola cheese (from the Buffalo Brussels Sprouts). Yummy! Definite repeat.
Spinach & Potato Bites. This did not turn out like it probably should have. Flat, kind of tough, very weird. I was disappointed. Also, no picture so I don't know what they're actually supposed to look like. They tasted fine with ketchup, sriracha, or Ranch dressing but presentation was meh.
Card Night Ginger Cookies. Broke out the KitchenAid mixer for this one and I'm glad I did. The mix had me a little worried but never judge it by what it looks like in the middle of the process! These cookies came out good but maybe a little too much molasses. I'll have to see if I need to substitute something else if I halve the molasses next time.
Khao Man Gai. Not a favorite. It was fine. I did use brown rice instead of white and that was a mistake because I have no experience with brown rice, where I have perfected white rice, so the brown rice took forever and was still wet 50 minutes later. But that's on me. The chicken was was fine but the sauce was really good. Probably won't make again.

Right of First Refusal (Radleigh University #2) - Dahlia Adler 3.5/5
Hoopla Audio.
I am NOT a fan of secretly pining for someone who is with someone else. Yes, it happens, I know it happens, but I don't want to be in someone's head who is doing it. Especially when the person he is with is your ROOMMATE. That was a bit ick for me and barely broken up is just...tasteless. Disrespectful. It makes me remember Rory thinking she had dibs on Dean even though he was married (yes a quite bit of a different circumstance for sure) because she had him first. Who had him FIRST does NOT matter. So yeah, a bit rude, IMO. So it was a little hard to get past that.

Out on Good Behavior (Radleigh University #3) - Dahlia Adler 4/5
Hoopla Audio.
Why was this so short?! I wanted everything for Frankie! But I read (listened to) this in an afternoon. I loved that Frankie was unapologetically sexual. GOOD. FOR. HER. She's been my favorite character through the trilogy so I was glad she got her own book and she got to dissect some of her feelings and wants and needs. I also really liked Samara and liked that TWO side characters from the previous books got their time to shine.

Not my favorite of the series but a contender for second place! I enjoyed traveling with the renaissance faire! And I'm glad Dex got his HEA even though he was kind of an asshole in Well Played. I liked Louisa in Well Matched so I'm glad she also got her HEA!

I loved it more the second time around! I gave it 4 stars the first time and that was on e-book. This time was on paperback and I was able to savor it more. Could be because I was interacting with the author as I was re-reading it, that's pretty awesome! 😎 Can't wait to start re-reading The Girl in the Tower in February! Follow @arden_katherine on Instagram for the readalong! I read it for the first time almost exactly 5 years ago!

While We Were Dating (The Wedding Date #6) - Jasmine Guillory 4/5
Home Library Paperback.
Not my favorite of the series. It sits pretty even with most of them. And it was longer than all of them! The colors on the covers are a bit too neon. lol. The story was cute, I really liked Ben and Anna together. Sad that this series has come to an end.

Galatea - Madeline Miller 5/5
Home Library Hardcover.
This lil bebe was not worth what I paid for it. I bought the Waterstones edition (I live in the US) and I did not know it was only 56 pages and the tiniest hardcover book I've ever seen in my LIFE. 🤣 It's adorable but definitely silly to be in print. I will treasure it forever. lol. I liked the story but I feel like Miller could have filled this mythology out and made it into a full-length novel. I've read her other books, she could've done it! This was just a taste of Pygmalion and his statue. I loved it but I wanted more. I wanted everything for Galatea.

Her Every Fear - Peter Swanson 3/5
Home Library Paperback.
Maaaaybe Peter Swanson is not for me. This is only my second novel by him so I'll probably try at least one more. But I don't know. This just didn't hit for me. I felt like the trauma Kate had previously gone through didn't necessarily do anything for the current plot. All women, regardless if they've been through trauma or not, would have had similar reactions to the current plot because we live on edge folks. We have to. The book was just so middle of the road. Did I like it better than Nine Lives? Yes.

How to Sell a Haunted House - Grady Hendrix 4/5
Home Library Hardcover.
This was my first Grady Hendrix book but it won't be my last! I was CREEPED OUT for most of this book!!! I would urge you to NOT read reviews for this one. Please go in blind. Only read the synopsis and go off of that! Please! I feel like a lot of reviews spoil the book with far too many details! This book had me scared, confused, and thrilled all at once! One thing I didn't like was that there wasn't an explanation for one piece of the puzzle: (view spoiler) But overall, this was sad sad story about a highly dysfunctional family who did not handle grief and tragedy well AT ALL.["br"]>["br"]>

Can't capture lightning in a bottle twice. This just didn't have the same impact as We Were Liars. You already know what it took till the end of We Were Liars to find out. Soooo there was no big reveal, no build-up, no excitement. Meh. Too bad.

Irish Tales of the Fairies and the Ghost World - Jeremiah Curtin 2/5
Home Library Paperback.
I had this book in my Amazon Wishlist for YEARS. Over 10. I did a little splurge at the end of 2022 and bought the 5 cheapest physical books on my Wishlist. This was one of them at $6.95. It's only 128 pages and I did not know it was originally written in like 1895. So it's old. It's dull. It's boring. A lot duller than I thought it would be. They were not the fairy stories I was looking for!

Chasing Your Tail (Whitman Street Cat Cafe #3) - Kate McMurray 3/5
Hoopla E-Book.
I just didn't vibe with this series. It was fine. Nothing really stood out for me as being above and beyond a normal, mediocre romcom. The characters didn't stand out. The romance didn't stand out. The spice didn't stand out. So this just gets 3 stars for being run-of-the-mill.
Forgot this one. Read it in mid-January before the Dahlia Adler books. Oops!

The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot - Marianne Cronin 4/5
Home Library Paperback.
I really enjoyed this one. I went back and forth between the audiobook and the paperback. I loved the narrator for Lenni but didn't like the narrator for Margot. Lenni is a typical 17-year-old; snarky, rude, annoying, think she knows everything. Lenni is dying. Margot is old. That's all. She's just too old to be caring for herself. An incident in the care home brought her to the hospital for a short stay. Lenni and Margot meet in the hospital and become fast friends who decide to tell their stories to each other through words and art. Margot, having a lived a lot more, has more stories. But they find common ground in the 100 years they have cumulatively lived. I really liked Arthur and how well he handled Lenni. This was a sweet, sad found family novel.

The Hermes Protocol - Chris M. Arnone 2/5
Won paperback ARC from BookishFirst.com!
I wanted to give this a good, honest go. It seemed interesting from the excerpt. Futuristic science fiction. The cover was cool, I was into it. But the first thing that threw me was the extremely consistent use of they/them. Look, even if you're writing a futuristic novel, you have to remember that present-day people are reading it. Not people from the future. So when every character's pronouns are they/them, it gets very confusing very quickly. Even more confusing when several other characters are he/them. WHO ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! I would rather have read their names over and over again instead of they/them pronouns. That would have been less confusing. And every time Elise met someone new, she wasn't allowed to assume their gender based on appearance so every new character was they/them until there was any dialogue and the character confirmed their pronouns. It made it so hard to get into and really detracted from the story which was kind of cool but was bogged down by all of these gender neutralities.

When No One Is Watching - Alyssa Cole 4/5
Home Library Paperback.
This went in places I had no idea it was going. Crazy plot twists! It reminded me of The Other Black Girl so IYKYK. Not quite as sci-fi as The Other Black Girl but that kind of twist. I don't know if that makes sense. But I really liked this book. I felt the heat (literally and figuratively), the animosity, the fear. It was palpable. Gentrification has come to this Brooklyn neighborhood, Gifford Place, and the current residents aren't happy, as to be expected. White people are invading and weird things start happening. This was my first Alyssa Cole novel and I own a couple of her romance novels so I will definitely be reading more!

Promise Boys - Nick Brooks 4/5
Won finished hardcover from BookishFirst.com!
I really liked Promise Boys. I liked that it was short and it had a slew of POVs but more because it was a mixed media format than because you needed to keep track of who was whom. A principal is dead and three young men of color are the suspects. These young men were not the only men of color in this private preparatory school but they became prime suspects for various reasons, each having some sort of altercation with the white principal prior to his being found murdered. It's juicy. It's a juicy story. I love how not all that you think is true, in numerous ways, in how characters are relating to other characters in this book. This prep school though was abysmal. No talking in class, in the halls, at lunch, they had to follow a blue line in the hallway like they're five-year-olds. It was messed up. That's now how you get upstanding, fine young men. To not be allowed to communicate with their peers, how weird is that?! An important part of school, public and private, is socialization. So this control freak of a principal I already didn't care about in this book! But the relationships that the characters created and fostered despite being in bad circumstances and hard to relate to situations was what made this book for me. I really enjoyed it.

Wicked Beauty (Dark Olympus #3) - Katee Robert 4/5
Kindle.
I'm really enjoying the plot development in these novels. Aside from the smut, there's an actual continuous storyline! And this one revolves around the next Ares. The competition is fierce and Helen is a great character. Achilles and Patroclus aren't so bad themselves. This triad was delightful. I loved that more aspects of Greek mythology are being pulled into the story as well.

Home Library Hardcover.
Loved it. I loved it so much. So much that I reevaluated and updated my rating for We Hunt the Flame and gave that 5 stars too. I tabbed a lot in both of these books. Faizal writes some really beautiful, lyrical, romantic lines. The zumra, I loved them. They all had their strengths and weaknesses and you get to know all of them. I feel like this is how people feel about the Crows? I haven't read any of the Grishaverse yet (or watched S&B) but if the Crows are anything like this group, I can understand the love! I'm so excited for A Tempest of Tea!

The Boy Who Lost Fairyland (Fairyland #4) - Catherynne M. Valente 3.5/5
Home Library Hardcover.
Maybe 3.5. I liked this one just a smidge less than the others. I don't know, I just didn't feel any connection to Hawthorn when we've spent so much time with September! I didn't care about him or his adventures. I think it would've been different if each book focused on a different character, like the very similar Wayward Children series, but it's just been September until and only this book. So meh. It was fine.

Took me far too long to finish this series! But now I'm done! And I'm glad. I feel like the series lost its way and just went for quirky by the end here. I actually don't really remember much about this one, probably because I ended up listening to most of it instead of reading it. Because I just wanted to be done with it. lol.
