Oh my gosh finallyy! Tysm for this! I read El Filibusterismo a year ago because I was eager to see what the 19th century was like in my country and how it differs or is alike to other countries (and also my Filipino teacher said that we would be tackling it in our grade). Anyways, it is poetic and very much commendable, I suppose you could compare it to Les Miserables (which I have watched but haven't read) because of the Reoccuring themes for freedom and independence coupled with romance and crime. In addition, I found social demographics fascinating like how the Chinese were treated and the way the upper class fussed about European history. It's also pretty cool to a country that I live on through hundreds of text-filled pages.
