Finally catching up on finishing this book, which I started way back in January.

I've read several Melanie Dickerson novels, and I have to admit that this one surprised me by disappointing me a bit.

Reason #1 was that there were a good 50 pages or so where nothing much was happening except feelings and a very slow burn. I do like slow burns, and Dickerson usually does these well, but usually there's something else urgent going on with the "suspense" plot.

Reason #2 was that (view spoiler)[the two main characters were both solidly betrothed (and for Gabe it wasn't something that happened in his infancy, so he did it willingly), and both of them continued to engage in the courtship without doing more than cross their fingers that they could ditch their respective betrotheds later on. Even worse, they seemed to be counting on God to make that happen. It just lowered my ability to root for the two of them. I kept crossing my own fingers, hoping that Dickerson would find a brill way to extricate Sophie and Gabe from what felt like a dishonorable situation. (hide spoiler)]

Congrats on finishing the book! You make several good points. I'm sorry that was disappointing. I was concerned that the two of them were betrothed too. I was hoping to hear more about Britta's betrothed and how that came about. I think that would've been interesting.
