Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Do you buy books online, if so where?
Amazon, Kobo, Book Depository?

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Koren help I can't figure out how to make this an actual poll where you can vote.

message 3: by Julie (new)

Julie (julielill) | 1682 comments I rarely buy books. I work at the library and usually get them all from there though if I do buy books I try to get them through an independent bookseller.

I'm not sure how I got here, but to create a poll go to the polls tab on the right side of the home screen and on the right side it says create a poll. Does anyone have any other ideas?

message 5: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments All it did was make this discussion, there didn't seem to be any thing where you put in things to vote.

Oh well can people just say if they buy books online where.
I don't buy books online either! I just get my info about them online.

But it seems Goodreads has changed and they no longer with Amazon but suggesting people buy books from Book Depository or Kobo. Never heard of Kobo.

Apparently not in the United States. My Amazon Kindle account and my Goodreads account are still connected.

I'm not sure why you can't create a poll. It worked for me. I just made up something to see if it worked and it did. It's still there because I don't see a place to delete it.

I went to the page of a book I'm reading now and where it said I could buy the book there was a drop down box and there was a list of 14 places I could go to buy the book. Amazon was one of them.

message 8: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Only got two places for any books I look up - Book Depository and Kobo. The Kobo site doesn't even link to the corresponding book title.

I have not had great experiences ordering books online.

The Library has a far better service IMHO.

message 9: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Ok I figured out how to make one - but not sure why its not showing up on here?

You have to go to Polls on right hand side or this link https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/1...

Kobo is an ereader like Kindle but you have to buy books from their site. You can also get elibrary books on certain platforms that will work on a Kobo.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Anyone got a Kindle or Kobo here? What is your experience of it? Anyone got both and want to compare?

message 12: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Is Kobo just a dyslexic version of Book?

Why does it have to start with K also. Couldn't they call it Obok? Or Okob. Or maybe Koob.

I have the Kindle app on my phone, which works just as well as an e reader. I have an old Barnes and Noble reader that I hardly ever use.

message 14: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments I have an ipad but I only use it for Libby e-books. I'll only borrow them if I can't find any paper copies.

I used to have a Kobo, it was nice then one day it just died. I have the app on my phone now.

Bought a Kindle, it is much different from the Kobo and from the app, still getting used to it.

message 16: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments Are they expensive? It seems the e-books themselves are cheap as chips, but the device might be expensive. You never see them in shops. Maybe you can only get the devices online.

Amazon owns Goodreads!

I buy books on Amazon, or I go to Carol's Paperbacks, sometimes Barnes & Noble, sometimes Thriftbooks, or of course addALL.com. Once in a while I make a major expedition to the Classic Book Shop, or King's Bookstore.

message 18: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments I'm impatient to book buy for the school library but have to wait. Have to deal with school bureaucracy. Again.

message 19: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 2027 comments I forgot to mention E.R. Hamilton. They have a staggeringly huge catalog of remaindered books, movies, TV shows and music discs of all kinds.

message 21: by Selina (new)

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments There's a new thing for NZ bookshops to buy online called Bookhub.
They will also tell you which store has it so you can go there in person if you want.

Haven't checked it out yet only heard about it the other day. All the bookshops businesses in NZ are joining it.

This almost sounds like an anti-Amazon. It supports rather than undermines local bookstores.

I didn't know book of the month club was still around. I used to belong to it (or something like it) a long time ago, before I could just download from the library.

Sarah Vigue (sarahvigue) | 9 comments Amazon is probably where I get the majority of my books but sometimes I just google where to find the best deal. Then in person it might be from theology class so a private group. I try to stay out of Barnes & Noble as that's an expensive habit! lol

I used to love BOTM club!!!

Hummingbird | 36 comments Amazon mainly tbh cause that's where I buy books that are not in English. I used to read more English literature, but that has since changed for linguistic reasons. I also used to buy from B&N I think some years back.

I wish we had a local book store. The closest is 60 miles away so I stop when I get in the area, just to support local. I recently heard there is a used book store in that town so I hope to stop there next time.

Where in the midwest do you live Koren? Is it rural/small town and not many shops where you are? Do you have a supermarket/grocery store? Do they still sell magazines and newspapers?

Surely someone can see a gap in the market where you are and set up a business!

I wish. From time to time some sort of book store will open but it never lasts long. Yes, I live in a small, rural community in southern Minnesota. Walmart has a small book section. We do have a nice library but the nonfiction section keeps getting smaller. No worries, though. We can download books from the library and there is always online. But when I get to a town with a bookstore it is nice to browse the real thing.

Grr someone needs to spend more on the non-fiction for your library

Just since I wrote at the end of October, they rearranged all of the shelves and put more fiction on the nonfiction side and made the nonfiction smaller. Nonfiction is only 6 rows now. I'll have to count the fiction rows but I think there must be at least 20.

I would imagine they are going to do what is most popular. The books on tape section is bigger than the nonfiction section. There must not be a lot of nonfiction readers in my area. The librarian in my small town library says she knows without looking when a book comes in for me.

Selina (literatelibrarian) | 3104 comments I went to the Scholastic Book Sale and Lucky Book Shop and bought a box full of books for $70 for the school library.
They only have sales once a term and its crowded as and they weigh the books instead of pricing them.

It's held at their distributors warehouse and have to drive all across town to get there.

message 38: by Selina (new)

Now they are not even making as many books on CDs and trying to get you to stream them, at least at my library that's the case.
