I first wanted to read this book because I heard Jay Baruchel offerring a strong case for the book on CBC's Canada Reads. Essentially saying the book offers strongs insights into what it is to be Canadian. One of the reoccurring categories of books that I read is novels that explore "what it is to be Canadian", so naturally the book ended up on the reading list.

That led to the book being something of a letdown in that I didn't find much of the book to have a current ring. Maybe this has something to do with the english speaking part of Canada becoming less monolithic?

And if the theme of solitude is something that is divisable in more than two, fine, but it's not something that is really explored in the book. Paul ends up being a pretty unremarkable character too. Young man who has a somewhat unique perspective but fails to harness talents is a pretty overserved market.
