A sweet lady librarian who loves to knit.

An 11 year old girl, who plays the french horn.

Here's mine. I guess I'm up against myself at the moment.

THE LIBRARIAN

(view spoiler)[(In a small out of the way Library on the outskirts of town. An old, female librarian sits behind her desk knitting. A short 30-year-old man, a History teacher, sits at a desk amongst a pile of leather-bound books. The sound of a French horn plays very poorly in the background.)

Teacher: Excuse me?

(The Librarian continues to knit without acknowledging the Teacher.)

Teacher: (A little louder) Excuse me?

(The Librarian still knits without acknowledging the Teacher.)

Teacher: (Stands up as books fall around him and begins yelling) Excuse me!

(The Librarian looks up from her knitting and smiles.)

Teacher: Are you even listening? I said “Excuse me”.

Librarian: (stops knitting.) Can I help you?

Teacher: I am trying to prepare some lessons for my students and I just wanted to know why you allow all that noise in the library.

Librarian: (looks puzzled) Well, of course. This library is for every one – so we do not only allow boys in the library. If we started excluding people, then we’d find ourselves in the midst of an uproar.

Teacher: (sighs in frustration) I didn’t say “boys”, I said “noise” – like a racket!

Librarian: (smiles, as she looks the Teacher up and down) Yes, well, it’s a rather handsome jacket. My husband used to wear one similar to that, except it was more chocolate in colour.

Teacher: (looks at his jacket and then at the Librarian) Oh, forget it! I’ll find who’s blowing that trumpet myself.

Librarian: (shakes her head) No. We don’t allow eating in the library. You’ll have to eat your crumpet outside. We don’t want to get our books dirty, now, do we? (giggles and returns to her knitting)

(Teacher walks around the library and finds an 11-year-old girl hidden away at the back of the library, playing the French horn)

Teacher: (covers his ears and shouts) Excuse me, miss!

Girl: (stops playing) Oh, hi!

Teacher: (unblocks his ears) You do know that you’re in a library, don’t you?

Girl: (smiles sweetly) Well, I didn’t think I was in a football stadium.

Teacher: There’s no need to be rude, miss. You’ll need to leave the library. You do understand that there are people trying to read and you blowing the French horn does not allow us to concentrate.

Girl: The Librarian said that it was fine.

Teacher: I’m sure she didn’t.

Girl: She did. I’ll ask her again.

(Girl leaves her things and goes across to the Librarian’s desk. Teacher follows.)

Girl: I’m sorry to interrupt your knitting, ma’am, but this man doesn’t believe that you let me play the French horn at the back of the library.

Librarian: (puts down her knitting) Well, of course, you sweet little girl. You’ll find everything you need at the back of the library.

Girl: (turns to Teacher) See – she let me.

Teacher: (gives a fake smile to the Librarian) I’m sorry, Ma’am, but did you actually hear what that girl was really saying?

Librarian: (puts a hand to her chest) I beg your pardon? How dare you! We are an equal opportunity library and if you don’t like it, you can leave, sir! What have I to fear if that girl is praying? You need to be a little more open minded, sir. First you want us to outcast girls and now you turn on religious beliefs. It’s uncultured people like you who are ruining this world for everyone else! Girls have as much right to be in this library as boys – no matter what their religious preference is!

Teacher: (looks at the Girl and then at the Librarian) No, you misheard me. The girl is blowing the French horn!

Librarian: Well, of course she is – she’s a volunteer! All our volunteers are helping to grow the back lawn! Maybe you should return to your seat and mind your own business, sir. (turns to the Girl) Don’t mind him, dear, you go back there and finish up the lawn… and… (glares at Teacher) and pray as much as you like.

Girl: (smiles sweetly and curtseys) Thank you, ma’am. (turns to the Teacher and smiles knowingly) Well, I’ll be off to blow my horn, sir.

Librarian: Thank you, dear.

Teacher: (points at Girl accusingly) She said she was going to blow her horn!

Librarian: (looks sternly at Teacher) Sir, I think it’s best if you leave now. You are not welcome in this library. On top of your sexist and anti-religious views, you stoop to down and out lying!

Teacher: But she said she was going to blow her horn!

Librarian: (points to the door angrily) Sir, she did not have any corn with her, otherwise I would have instructed her to eat it outside, like I told you to do with your crumpet. Now leave before I call the police.

Teacher: (grabs his things, as Girl begins playing the French horn again) Fine – I can’t put up with the racket anyway! (Teacher leaves library)

Librarian: (sits down and continues her knitting, while the French horn plays) The nerve of some people… and why doesn’t he get rid of the jacket if he doesn't like it. Silly, man. (hide spoiler)]

Ok, just to give Travis some competition :D, here's mine. Sort of a fast story, so I apologize for formatting, spelling, crap sentence structure, and cliche. (and if someone wants to give me a heads' up on how to do indenting here, that would make this piece imminently more readable!)

(sorry, now that this contest is closed, I'm deleting this entry. I have submitted the story to a contest, and need to avoid copyright issues. :) )

oops, sorry, my librarian was neither sweet nor loved to knit LOL.

Oh well. I'll leave it, and bow to Travis' superior skills in following directions :D
