I thought we had read it recently enough that I would remember anything. Apparently, my mind retains books less than I thought considering all we read :) There are some reminder points sprinkled in. Thank you! I was hoping Weeks would provide us one too, but I'll take whatever I can get... Managed to narrow the gap in my current read down to 200pages left, I doubt I'll be able to ditch it today, but tomorrow I'll join you--*fingers crossed*.

Up to Ch. 8... Well, we are back at it straight away... I love the White! The Little and Big Jasper is in trouble and the black whales were interesting... Zymun is still an asshole! And Gavin seems to be lost...

Only up to Chapter 3--didn't the last book start the same? With a big leviathan? Way to jump in the action...

Up to Ch. 10... (view spoiler)[ Having The White order Karris to not draft again means she is very close to breaking the halo. And she is testing her:) I guess she did good enough to put her as the person managing her spies...

Tia met Murder Sharp! How creepy is that! And the poor girl once again has to be coerced into doing things she doesn't want to in order to get her papers. That just sucks! It has to be absolutely horrible to be treated like a thing to be bartered over... I hate, HATE, even the thought of slavery... (hide spoiler)]

Ch. 13, about Darjan and his Djinn, I wonder how that will play in the long run, or if it just for us to learn about the 200 demon Djinn whom Lucidinious and his followers are trying to remove from the world...

Ch. 15... Well, if this wasn't a classic "wandering through the desert" episode, I don't know what is. Kind of prophetic, with the voice speaking to Kip and the lady with the message from Orholam, that " he is not worthless, but he is worth less than he thinks he is", and having in mind that he thinks he is the Lightbringer, I guess G-d is telling him he is not... Hmmm...

Her comments on his "sapling" were hilarious!:)))

Up to Ch. 18... (view spoiler)[Teia is oblivious to Ben-hadad obviously trying to tell her that now Kip is gone and he would like to get with her...

Murder Sharp is absolutely horrible! He totally set Teia up, and I am sure he will use it against her somehow...

Gunner is something, isn't he? Gavin should not underestimate him... (hide spoiler)]

Up to Ch. 21.... (view spoiler)[ Finally, Teia is free! And Kip is back! And he told the Andros and Karris that Gavin is alive. I just don't understand why he gave his grandfather an out... The prayer at the end of the chapter was beautiful! The idea of groups of drafters have to manually balance the colors again is very interesting. I guess it was the old way of doing it, before Prisms...

Teia told Ironfist what has been going on with her and now they will tell the White... I think this was the right move. (hide spoiler)]

Up to Ch. 23... Ch. 22 makes me wonder how close is the slave Orholam to the Real Orholam... That was a very interesting conversation between him and Gavin.....

Teia's background story is horrible... I still absolutely adore The White !

Ch 24... Darn it, these types of chapters are so difficult for me to read! I hate this ritual and I hate how it hurts everyone involved! No wonder(view spoiler)[ Gavin drafted Black Luxcin after that... It also reminded me how much he lost when he had to kill his mother... (hide spoiler)]

Ch. 25... Andros allowed Kip to get away with his story, because he is entertaining? I don't know about that. I think Big Red is a very smart tactician and will not give up a possible pawn in his game of chess... And another instance in the gym, makes his Blackguard friends decide he is the Lightbringer...

Ch. 26... I still don't like Liv, and got a kick out of Samila Sayeh, the Blue, doing the calculations on top of her head, while Liv had been struggling to do it for the longest!!! Hahaha! I love Samila and I hate that she joined the Color Prince...

Ch. 27... Liv is told that the black bead in the necklace is dead Black Luxcin and if even a part of it is still alive, it has will of its own, which makes it extremely dangerous and it could eat all the magic in the world... That is a very scary concept! If all the stuff in the dungeon that Gavin made, underneath the colorful Luxcin is black Luxcin, be it dead or almost dead, then the Mad Man in the mirror might have been really a shade of the dead Black Luxcin!!! So it really was talking to his brother!!!

Ch. 28... Kip is having to come to terms with Teia not being a slave, or more exactly, his slave anymore...

He needs more practical classes of drafting for sure! That became blatantly obvious while he was on that island...

Magister Kadha.. That was a very mature stand he took with her, I was very surprised. Going to the White to ask her to be reassigned to a position she would actually thrive at, was awesome! Of course, he had to ask for the White to be his personal tutor, hahaha! He is full of contradictions! Humble and arrogant at the same time! Works for him though.

It was touching when the White gave him her Januce card and said she would like someone to understand her one day... Kind of made me sad for her. And she assigned him Karris as his tutor! I wonder how Karris will feel about that...

Ch. 29... Dazen's dream of his brother being killed... I wonder what that was all about...

Ch. 30... Another ship takeover, with young Antonio Malargos trying to free the slaves

Ch. 31... Arys Sub Red and Murder Sharp!!! Another very difficult chapter to read... I actually found myself really rooting for her, but alas, Murder Sharp lived up to his name once again! Very strong chapter!

Ch. 32... Andros made himself a Promacos, cheating and manipulating to the end, the Blackheart! He is so easy to hate, but you just can't help but respect him... And we have the new Green, but somehow her ship was detained just enough for her to be late... Karris needs to learn how to play this game fast, or he will keep on winning...

Ch. 33... Kip looking for Rea Siluz, and the reaction of the librarian tells me that she is not a tutor or a librarian there... Then where did she come from?

He also meets the young Quintin, who is struggling with false modesty:)))

Ch. 34... Kip gets blocked from going to Yello Luxcin class again and has to get another permit to enter the forbidden libraries from Big Red... At least he got to go to a class on Luxcin engineering.

Andross denying Teia a medal just seems petty and ridiculous! He just doesn't want anyone not under his power to prosper in any way, does he?!

Ch. 35... Gunner didn't kill Gavin and Gavin helped Gunner up onto the ship's deck...

Ch. 36... Kip and Andross play again, while Greenwoody is being his usual despicable self! Andross once again kicks Kip's ass and tells him, if he wants to become The Prism, he needs to find him the stolen cards by a certain date... Kip also told Big Red about Zymun being a snake, with no feelings or anything to humanise him at all... I wonder if Andross will take that under consideration...

Ch. 37... The High Luxiats are trying to move the important books out of the libraries where Kip can now go... Sneaky!

Ch. 38... Teia at her first meeting with the Order... That story was very interesting. So, the Lightbringer is a rogue Mistwalker, who stole the secrets of the glasses and went into the regular folks, preaching against the Braxians, who believed that Human Will is the power in the world, not any g-ds... This sounds awfully a lot like the story of Prometheus and Lucifer... They go against a doctrine in order to benefit the people... (hide spoiler)]

I'm finding this book is going down smoother than the ones before it. I don't know what it is about third books in a series--but so far, all of this month's #3s in the BR scene have been my favorites to date...

Chapter 8--(view spoiler)[Teia's paryl scene was so cool! Leaving hidden messages in the air... I wasn't expecting her to run, but it does seem like the wise choice. And connected to the Broken Eye--the people who assassinated that card-maker! Very curious to see how they are tied in to everything... antagonist? ally? connected to Grandpa Guile or the Color Prince or none of it? Where do they stand in this war of colors? (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 9--more than that, I think... (view spoiler)[Hints that the White is nearing the end... the order to stop casting just as she’d done...herself ... testing a weapon... the White is grooming Karris to be her successor... (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 10--(view spoiler)[Why is one set of papers the only record of Teia's status? Shouldn't the papers just be an official document, and the actual situation a matter of public record? And didn't Kip file things in proper places? Or leave a will? I am rather annoyed that she is so simply caught this way... did she actually go check? And doesn't joining the Blackguards manumit her anyway? I find it hard to believe that Teia's ownership can be "stolen" like this--she is Kip's slave as a matter of record. Someone else showing up with her papers should just show that other person is a thief. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 11. Okay. Orholam. I found that funny too. Fukkelot--Tourrettes?

Just a cute quote. I like how both Kip & Teia have a tendency to talk to themselves third-person-y. I think Gavin does it sometimes too...

Still liking the innovative ways Weeks comes up with for using luxin...

I am doing kindle for this and I am noticing a ton of things much more than on audio.

The manumission papers thing didn't make sense to me either... But I have a very hard time dealing with the slavery issue on all fronts, so I kind of reject all aspects of it and didn't think deeper on it... But yeah, you would think there should be other back-ups and ways to prove ownership...

Ch. 39... So, the Blinding Knife is not able to return the powers back to the person they took them from? Or maybe you need some type of ritual or something? It's sad Gavin couldn't get his colors back... I don't think Antonius is right in taking him to his aunt's home, since she obviously hates him...

Ch. 40... The squad in the library are kind of hilarious. However, the rituals of the pagans' worship that Cruxer read about, and them being just a fraction of the type, are horrifying! The conversation that followed was very interesting... The squad explains again why they think Kip is the Lightbringer and Cruxer once again shows why he is the perfect leader of the Blackguard around Kip...

Ch. 41... Karris got Kip a bunch of color tutors! Finally! He needs this badly!!!
During their training Kip is able to hide his knowledge of Zymun, as Big Red asked him during their meeting. The Red's view on Orholam and divinity makes perfect sense when you know what he is like... Once again Big Red gave him an ultimatum... I hate how manipulative he is and arrogant about it! I wish Kip and Gavin outwit him!!!!
It's good to have Winsen back:)

Ch. 42... Prophet Orholam is pissed that Gavin doesn't admit even to himself that he has drafted Black Luxin and asked him if he saw "Them"? More and more I am thinking The Djinn are important here... He is also surprised that he has drafted White Luxin too... And because he chooses to remember the Black, but not the White, he has failed and will be stricken blind... This was hard to read...

Gavin threw the Blinding Knife to the pirates before jumping in the river to escape...

Ch. 43... Dramatic escape swim ended by an evil dolphin:)

Ch. 44... Another test/exercise for the squad. They were actually good at deciphering their true mission. Cruxer truly delved in what it means for Kip to be in the Blackguard and him being the Lightbringer... They also spoke about one of them dying for Kip... Another very poignant moment... They also said that Kip fits better for the role of Lightbringer than his dad, because he is an outsider, a bastard from a different country, while his father is as an insider as they get, being born Guile ... I also completely agree with Cruxer's logic about why the Lightbringer is needed at this point in time, since obviously The Luxiats are doing a piss-poor job and things need to change...

Ch. 45... Tia going all stabby was kind of awesome!!! The words of the dude before she stabbed him though, made me very uncomfortable. There had been a pagan goddess by her name, and he asked her for her blessing while dying... I am really, really hoping she has nothing to do with those "gods"... (hide spoiler)]

Ch. 46... Eirene Malargos has Gavin and she is not happy... Apparently the river dolphins are trained, not magicked. He is not given any good choices, and her promise to "remove one of his testicles and crush the other. Then if he somehow manages to have a son, she will castrate the child"... What a sweet lady! I think she carries some resentment towards him...

Ch. 47 ... Kip's take on responsibility for Teia's kill and all the actions of the squad, was a nice bonding moment... His interpretation of the weaknesses of the Chromeria and the good points of their opponents, but still standing for making the Chromeria better, not taking it down, kind of reminded me of every time when someone yells at protesters here in the US, to "Love it or leave it!"... You can't sleep on the mistakes and weaknesses of the country you love, so you have to find a way to affect change. Kip had a really good point! Chromeria teaches that drafters are equal to all others, and servants to the people, while the Color Prince and his people preach that they are above all others by the will of the g-ds...

Ch. 48... Andross established The Lighthuard... By the name, I am starting to think that he believes himself to be The Lightbringer... The Chromeria is steady loosing the war and I feel like The Blackguard is being under minded at every turn. So many of them dead:(((

Ch. 49... Teia is a Lightsplitter! How cool is that! And what are the implications? Could she be the Lightbringer???

Ch. 50... The meeting between Teia and Karris made it even more certain - my two favorite characters are 1. Teia and 2. Karris! 3 is the White, 4. is Gavin and 5. is Kip:))) (hide spoiler)]

Yeah this chapter was a detour from the regular... very curious to see how these card-sessions fit in to the whole... (view spoiler)[the whole way he talked about Orholam v. his gods sounded like his people worshipped the color "gods"--and with them manifesting in the world... and how he had that voice in his head that liked one color over another... and knew Karris's namesake--she was a White, wasn't she? One of the Greats?

There's two pieces going on right now--the political stuff with Grandpa Guile and the Color Prince etc, but also the world's increasing color imbalance and the manifestation of color-gods... (hide spoiler)]

And yeah... Master Sharp's move there...grrr made me mad. And so much worse, her being color blind... possibly missing some of the red blood on her... (hide spoiler)]

I notice the same thing when I do physical over audio... I've been trying to do these big complicated books on physical to catch the details, and leaving the small ones to audio...

Some things in the book still don't add up logically for me, but I think I'm getting better at ignoring them... though I would've liked a line or two like "she had yet to file her papers, so there was no record, and with no other copies of her manumission files in existence, without those files, her ownership would revert to Kip's next of kin... Andross Guile." Something like that--that would've made my brain stop arguing with the book...

Ch. 51... Tremblefist is better than Ironfist! And that was a very tender brotherly love moment!<3

Ch. 52... Karris drinking with another awesome female character - Marissia, was another strong emotional moment! Weeks is doing a great job tugging on the heartstrings in this book!

Ch. 53... Samila Sayeh's card sees what that black Luxin necklace can do... Not a good idea to put it on, for sure!

Ch. 54... So Marissia is Still going to help with the spi network. That is good!

Ch. 55... Kip remembered in his dream that his father is not The Prism anymore... I love how he sees Gavin's action to protect him as a sign that maybe he is worth something, if a man like Gavin is willing to risk his own life to save him...

Quentin finally confirmed that The Blinding Knife has something to do with Confirming the new Prism. I like Quentin, but I am beginning to really hate the current High Luxiats! (hide spoiler)]

Nirkatze, exactly! He kind of assumed we would understand that her ownership would revert to basically Big Red, but we can't really know that, since we are not privy to the rules of this world regarding slave ownership... But as you said, I try to ignore those things, because at this point I really care about the characters and want to know what will happen... I find the story fascinating and I am completely engrossed!

I almost wish I could have been a beta reader for these books... so many of the things that bug me could have been fixed with a few spare lines of ass-covering... but yeah, I'm in to the story now!

I thought the council scene was interesting too--I didn't see Kip's new version of events as giving Andross an out, but rather, of him recognizing that neither he nor Andross held a winning hand of cards, and offering a truce for the time being... he's still thinking Nine Kings, I think. I also liked how Andross maneuvered him into a private meeting... curious to see what wager/punishment Grandpa Guile comes up with next...

I kind of wish Teia would get angry more than scared at the whole murder set-up thing--but I'm glad she's finally talking to folks about the theft blackmail part... and it makes sense that her first reaction would be to hermit and worry--she's been dealing with slavery longer than she's been a Blackguard-in-training... Definitely some interesting religious stuff going on in this one... (view spoiler)[First that lady with Kip, now the galley slave with Gavin... and the White's prayer... I hope we get more insight into the whole pantheon, with Orholam and the color-gods too... looks like we're going that way...

And the bit about Gavin turning on Dazen when he told him he was lightsplitting--His older brother had taken Dazen’s gift as a betrayal, as Dazen taking away the one thing that made him special.--if Gavin was a made Prism, with the Knife, then he wasn't special... and Gavin being a natural Prism means he was...

I like "Orholam"'s game with Orholam--saying "oh God says he'll do this" and then Orholam would have to do it... (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 23--(view spoiler)[So glad Teia spilled all! And I love seeing the White at her manipulationest--for good! She really is the opposite of Andross...

Really curious--that line about bringing the Broken Eye "back into the fold"--will we get an Assassin training arc, with Teia and Kip jumping through hoops to join the Broken Eye? That'd be one way to get Kip away from Grandpa Guile again... (hide spoiler)]

I really like the touches Gavin's mother added--(view spoiler)[reminding Gavin to make these last moments special... very poignant... and her advice/admonition: "we are all frauds."

I really have to wonder if the Freeing used to be done with the Blinding Knife, and if it thus was not an event that had to end with death...

This chapter reminds me of the Arc of a Scythe books--to be able to give these people compassion in death is a sacrifice of one's own soul...

And the list of people meeting him in his dream makes me think of Rand al'Thor's list of women... I do appreciate the variety in people and ways Gavin interacted with them at their end, given in a terse list--and how the list changes from their sins to their attributes as Gavin gets more horrified and weary... and then to how they reacted at their death, as if their death-faces were flickering before his eyes as his nightmare crescendos...

And very curious about the qualities of black luxin. (hide spoiler)]

Ch. 24 was masterfully done! Very nightmarish in nature and very vivid. I think the author's best touch was at going from the deeply personal at first, to the superficial towards the end, when his psyche was unable to take any more... And the moment he broke! That was very strong!!!

Through Chapter 46--work week tends to wipe the floor with me, so I've been reading but haven't really been thinking while reading, you know?

@Choko--I love reading all of your chapter blow-by-blow thoughts! It's a really nice summary & reminder too, especially since my brain is kind of in a fugue state...

General thoughts through 46--(view spoiler)[I find the Lightbringer prophecies really tantalizing--but also appreciate how Cruxer warned that the prophecies have been potentially corrupted by language and time, not to mention not knowing what is a real prophecy and what is fake.

Prophecy-wise--killed both Gods and Kings could be Kip or Gavin... and even the origins bit, with Cruxer being sure it wouldn't be Gavin--could be, since his taking his brother's place could be construed as coming from mysterious background... both are geniuses of magic...

Then there was a bit about crushing things... or breaking things... I don't remember what. And Kip getting the name Breaker--but Gavin also broke a lot of the world with the Prism's War...

The Black Luxin & White Luxin is interesting... it seems that Black comes from the darkest part of humanity--and has power over the darkest part too. I also didn't realize (forgot?) that Hellstone--the Luxically inert stone that Gavin used to make his brother's prison was denuded Black Luxin... I don't remember what happened with White Luxin except that it was something in that battle in book 1.... is it the opposite of Black then? A Luxin formed from hope? But other than possibly allow someone to control a color god, what does Black Luxin do?

I like how the sessions of the Blackguard cadre in the library means we're getting a little more of a glimpse into the magic system... I feel like we know the most about Paryl so far, for all that we've seen other colors drafted more often. Blue, green, and yellow seem most useful for physical construction... some Superviolet too. Red for fire? Orange for lubricant? Sub-red also does fire... and then Orange has that curse-aspect which is forbidden, and green goes wild, blue & superviolet both do logic... what does yellow do, emotionally? If that one teacher is any indication... enhances arrogance and pride?

Andross Guile--I'm really starting to enjoy him as an antagonist. Loved to hate him at the beginning, but also now starting to admire him--sign of good writing! I dread his sessions with Kip, but I also appreciate how his pushing has made Kip grow... and look forward to his eventual downfall (@author--please?) (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 47 (view spoiler)[I really love seeing how much Kip is growing in this book--especially in knowledge and application, intelligence. His ability to strategize with Nine Kings--have to thank Grandpa Guile for that, as much as hate him--and seeing him start applying that in real life, like when he thinks through his possible responses and plays in a conversation... makes me think of how folks talk about Chess being a game of life...

And I love how he just... takes apart the whole government and his comrades in his analysis chat here...

@Choko--I really like how you compared it with U.S. protesters, and the comparison between the Chromeria & Color Prince... though I'm really looking forward to someone on the Chromeria side finally realizing that Slavery is wrong and hopefully doing Something About It. Was a bit disappointed in Gavin for thinking about it--and then dismissing it. "Oh, I'm nice when I have sex with my slaves, so I'm not a bad guy." Oh yes you are. He should have stayed a galley slave longer.

I don't get "wife, rash, bed, whore"?

It's a little bittersweet, how Kip is starting to be with the Blackguards--that conversation earlier with Cruxer, about how Kip is never going to make full Blackguard... politics, and destiny... he won't be allowed in their power structure, but he'll still always be one of them, regardless... and his chat with Cruxer about his girlfriend--Kip'll never let their deaths be worthless...

In some ways, his position is similar to Karris'--once inside, now outside (though Kip isn't quite outside yet)--but we never got to see Karris' comraderie with her fellow troops. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 48 (view spoiler)[I like these little reminders we get of the problems in nature--beyond the political maneuvering, there's this whole other problem and mystery going on...

Wait--Blackguards are slaves? Did I interpret that line right?? And not all Blackguards are drafters, right? (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 49 (view spoiler)["Orholam's poxy gemsack!" adding that to my repertoire of curses, for sure.

I find Teia's test interesting--she thinks logically when blue, neutral when in yellow, feels trapped & needs freedom for green--all the emotions! So I guess that answers my question about the emotional impact of yellow...

So it seems that lightsplitting is not a Prism-only thing? It has to be a combination of lightsplitting and being a full-spectrum polychrome? Or more? What exactly makes a Prism a Prism?

I thought that it was lightsplitting that made the prismatic eyes, and that meant a Prism could draft without compunction--never worrying about breaking the halo. But no?

Also--thinking about the Blinding Knife--how Gavin is now color blind... and one of the prophecies of the Lightbringiner is that he will restore the Blind? I wonder if that means Gavin will get his colors back somehow--and that'll be a hint on who our Lightbringer might be? Definitely wondering about the knife--it takes, how does it give? I think it hurt Gavin (unlike the previous times when there was no wound) because there wasn't anything to take this time... (hide spoiler)]

Oh man I really enjoyed this series. Had many flaws, but the magic was awesome and had some very intriguing characters... Loved to hate ol Andross Guile :D

LOL I agree about red herrings... it could be anyone... makes me think of Fall of a Kingdom--Hilari Bell's Farsala trilogy which had multiple people all end up become part of a legend, a conglomeration of traits and deeds that added up in aggregate to one ideal.
