The novel version of the acclaimed anime film about surfing, summer love, grief, and a hint of magic.

Carefree Hinako moves to a small seaside town to surf. When her new apartment catches fire, she’s rescued by Minato, a gentle firefighter with a heart of gold. The two soon begin surfing together, and before they know it, they’re falling in love. But their young romance comes to an abrupt halt when tragedy strikes. Now Hinako is determined to rescue Minato, just like he once saved her. A moving tale of love and yearning based on the award-winning anime.

Link (linkarific) | 6 comments I ordered a copy today, so I won't be on the exact schedule, but I will try to keep to the number of days for each section.
UPDATE: Still haven't got my copy... it's running late!!! hopefully by Tuesday.

The schedule is more to avoid spoilers while discussing and so we have some idea about how long it'll take to read the book to schedule the next one. :) Read at your own pace and don't worry about rushing

Iva Ts | 6 comments Haha, for the first part of the reading schedule - I can totally relate to the misgivings of the main heroine with preparing omurice - I have tried making it a few times and the final step with the eggs is indeed the hardest part, despite sounding the easiest. Nice set up for the story up until chapter 2 - good introduction and descriptions.

Just started reading it myself and MAN, this is so easy to get engrossed in.

Agreed on the omurice. I've triced to make it a few times with limited success lol. They're still tasty even if they don't look pretty though.

Howard | 91 comments Finally getting time to read this today and I'm already caught up (most likely just going to finish it today because I want to see have it finishes). The writing style is easy to read and get immersed in. Am I the only one who had to look up what a Shaka was?

Nope! I had to look it up as well since they kept using it;) Once it was described, course I had seen someone use it before, just didn't realize it had a name:)

Indeed, the style is very easy to read, perhaps because it is adapted from the screenplay itself - i can totally see it playing out as a movie.

Read until chapter 4 so far and like how different POV from other characters are thrown in as well, giving us subtle, but additional details.

Iva Ts | 6 comments Finally managed to finish it. It was a nice little read. I liked the messages and descriptions of the surfing actually made me want to try. It is easy to read and I liked the main character and Wasabi. Would have loved it to be a little longer or for us to have explored the characters more, but overall was very enjoyable. It certainly makes me want to see the original movie, just to compare the feel and flow of the story, plus I want to see how the final fire scene is animated.

Jessica Kuna I just finished this novel last night, though I reread the final chapter this morning as I was too busy crying the entire second half of the novel to have the capacity to fully read it through tears last night. I hope to read more novels about this. It was a beautiful depiction of the fragility of being human - from first love to grief to finding who we are.
