In this novel, Armstrong Todd has been sent from Chicago to spend the summer with his relatives in segregated rural Mississippi. He is killed for speaking a few words of innocuous French to a white woman. The book then shows the effects of his death on the communities in both Mississippi and Chicago, and on his friends and family as well as the killer’s family. Whilst racism and its effects were covered in detail, so was poverty, injustice, alcoholism and domestic abuse among others. This book had lots of characters, but each of the main characters had a distinctive voice and they felt both authentic and memorable, as did the setting Campbell wrote about.
