Anecdotes of Destiny is a short story collection written by Isak Dinesen (best known for Out of Africa). The stories are mostly set in Norway, and a few involve artists of various types (included a talented chef) who have to balance their driving need to create, with more practical concerns. My two favorites were Babette's Feast and Tempests. Babette's Feast is the most well known story in this collection, and was made into a lovely film (with subtitles). I never forgot the expressions of the actor's faces during the scenes involving the feast. I was glad to finally read the actual story to better understand the characters. My enjoyment of the story was enhanced by my memory of those faces on film. I recommend it.
