Dan left for the service when Eden was young and left her in a not very good situation because he just couldn't stay in that situation himself. I don't blame him for leaving, it was a bad situation all around. He feels guilty for leaving and not being around more, even though he sent every spare dollar he had to his mother.
While I understand the reasons for Dan's leaving and do not blame him for it, his attitude toward his sister is appalling. Not only does he take out his guilt on her, but unfairly judges and shames her. I have never been a fan of Dan (his stalkerish behavior with Sophia is truly creepy) and this book only consolidated my opinion of him. He is a jerk in serious need of an attitude adjustment.
I didn't buy Dan's guilt at leaving Eden for his crappy attitude toward her. If he really felt guilty, he would be more kind, understanding, and loving. My feelings toward Dan go back and forth. In some books, I like him but in others he is a big jerk and pisses me off. This time I am 100% pissed.
Why if you feel guilty for leaving someone innocent behind would you then humiliate and tear her down? I get that the family situation was intolerable and he had to leave but his behavior towards Eden was inexcusable. He’s now part of the problem.
As Lauren noted, his behavior towards Sophia has bordered on predator-ish. He’s arrogant and a know it all, which is why he can’t “hear” anyone, especially the word “no.”
Right now, he’s just a big jerk in my mind. Who does this?
