I was pretty sure Nash was alive and they had faked his death to give him some space from the Agency. I have no idea what they had over Nash to make him work for them again.
They threatened to hurt or kill Tess to get him to do what they wanted. I never thought he was dead. Why would Brockmann kill off a character who had already had his own story? That would not be good for readership.
The first time I read this book, I remembered being shocked that Brockmann would kill off a major character like Nash. I kept waiting for someone to say it was all a mistake after they were told that he had died at the hospital. I didn't even think about the fact that they were faking his death to get him out from under the Agency.
Nash’s bizarre behavior rattled me and I should have made the connection to the Agency. I’m not sure it was Tess they used as leverage, though. That’s still an open question for me.
