I know our group stops at books written (or about) the time after 1939 but you may be interested in Dear Mother, Love Daddy: The World War II Letters of Roscoe and Gladys Yegerlehner: May 1942-September 1942 by Deborah Sweeney. I chose 1939 because I feel after WWII the world became a much different place.
