Play Book Tag discussion

I really liked the premise of this book – that Sherlock Holmes has retired and is living quietly in the countryside when a teenage girl comes into his life and becomes his pupil. Despite never having read a Sherlock Holmes book, I am familiar with the character and a number of the most famous stories. I really liked the character of Mary Russell. She is determined, intelligent, can stand up for herself and does not fit the mould of what young ladies were expected to be like at the time. I also really liked how this first book is not only used to introduce us to Mary, but spans over a number of years to allow her to grow up before the first mystery needs to be solved. I look forward to reading more in this series soon.
