POSSIBLY SOLVED > Scholastic fair book about a journey to the center of the earth style adventure looking for monsters, dark tone, possibly horror but perhaps adventure, lots of illustrations some of which were almost body-horror, fiction written as non-fiction

Daniel Dezendorf | 2 comments Book would have been in the scholastic book fair about 2010-2011, I remember it was a large book, similar to the "spiderwick's guide to the fantastical world around you" that was recently published. Book had a very dark tone, the opening involved an article about the narrator going missing, I think his name had "Heart" or "Love" in it? There were really creepy illustrations (full color), one of an imprint of a six fingered hand that set the narrator on his lifelong quest to prove monsters exist. He built a submersible similar to Captain Nemo's vessel, I believe even following in his footsteps. There was an underground petrified forest with a plant creature that absorbed everything it came across, incorperating them into it's form much like the thing in John Carpenter's "The Thing". The book had a code hidden in the pages, with a decoding device in the back that revealed "they're real" or "they're here" should you use it on the correct pages.

Daniel Dezendorf | 2 comments Update: I think I located the book, but I can't be 100% sure as I can't find any illustrations to verify. The book would be "Field Guide to Monsters" by Darren Zenko, and it sadly appears to be out of print. If anyone has a copy or can get a snapshot of a few pages, I'd be greatly appreciate it as google brings up nothing helpful.

(otherwise, if you can find it offered on Abebooks or similar, you can often request photos. Bookfinder.com is my go-to)

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5606 comments If it's not Field Guide to Monsters, it might be World of Monsters - Edgar Wishbone by Marc McBride - it has colour illustrations and the premise is that it's the journal of a monster hunter who has gone missing.
Edit: This ebay listing has a couple of pictures of the insides - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275458439643
