Lt. Eve Dallas is just home from a long overdue vacation when she responds to a call of an unattended death. The victim is Martin Greenleaf, retired Internal Affairs Captain. At first glance, the scene appears to be suicide, but the closer Eve examines the body, the more suspicious she becomes.

An unlocked open window, a loving wife and family, a too-perfect suicide note—Eve's gut says it's a homicide. After all, Greenleaf put a lot of dirty cops away during his forty-seven years in Internal Affairs. It could very well be payback—and she will not rest until the case is closed.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3072 comments Can't wait. I hope it starts with her vacation. I love those little insights into Eve and Roarke's world.

Oh, that would be nice!

Barbara "Cookie" Serfaty Williams (goodreadscomcookiew1801) | 1573 comments Sounds like a great story. Can wait for Eve and Roarke’s next adventure

I alway love the parts where we see into their lives also.

Lynn (ftbooklover) | 132 comments Looking forward to this one.

ElectricOutcast (electicoutcast) | 647 comments If there's one thing about this volume that I'm already breathing a partial sigh of relief, it's the fact that at least an established character ain't being killed off. Because that was my fear when I read the blurb, and my mind immediately thought back to Promises and look how that turned out.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
As best as I can tell, this is his first mention.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3072 comments It isn't a good idea to advance in Internal Affairs in the Eve Dallas world. Webster's crooked boss was killed and now this guy. One positive thought: I suspect that we will get an update on Don Webster and Darcia Angelo

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
I hope so! It’s been a minute.

ElectricOutcast (electicoutcast) | 647 comments Not gonna lie, for reasons I prefer not to disclose, I didn't like Webster as a character. But since he's mostly behaved himself after the events of Judgement, I can tolerate him a little better as a character.

About "Promises" - I never thought of "Ammy" as an established character.

The publisher has agreed to sponsor a sweepstakes (giveaway) exclusive to members of the JDR group! It will begin on August 14. I’ll send out a broadcast message on that date with the link.

Brenda | 223 comments Will it only be for the US people Jonetta?

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
Unfortunately, yes.

Susan, it was an unsolicited offer! I love this publisher.

I'm so glad Nora has gone with St. Martins Press! They really do go above & beyond for their authors and their readers.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3072 comments Yea! I don't get too many of these giveaways, but I did get an ARC for Inheritance. That is a first for me from Nora.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
That's great, Sharon!

Sad - but never mind! I wish you all the best of luck :)

Michelle | 2669 comments Brenda I know what you mean. Sad but I remember one year is was open to all. In fact little old me in South Africa won something. A lovely Keyring .

( just click on page 5. There's a photo of the keyring)

So we just need to hang in there. Sometimes we all get to participate.

Brenda | 223 comments That is really nice Michelle! I bet you were thrilled to receive it 😊

It has to do with the wide variety and complexity of international sweepstakes laws, which differ by country.

I googled the topic and was stunned by the multitude of examples. Not sure when all of this changed but it is today’s reality.

Brenda | 223 comments Thanks Jonetta for doing that. Things just go from bad to worse in most cases! At least you guys can enter without issues. I was sad when Goodreads stopped including Australia (and probably other countries) in their giveaway program. Now it's only available to US subscribers (or was last time I looked)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
And that’s the reason why. Some of the rules are too onerous for a simple book giveaway. Countries should consider creating a list of exclusions or exemptions if the value is under $50. That would solve the problem.

Brenda | 223 comments They probably put it in the "too hard basket"!

We have one of our Australian publishers now doing monthly giveaways of ARCs within our group, which is lovely.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15104 comments Mod
Oh, that is!

ElectricOutcast (electicoutcast) | 647 comments Currently on Chapter Seventeen right now, will probably finish this volume in the afternoon.

Edit: Finished it a few hours ago and let me just say that this is possibly one of most out of left field installments of the Eve Dallas/Roarke series. If you haven't started the book yet, you'll find out why when you get into it.

Maggie | 1579 comments Starting it now!

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3072 comments I finished. I liked it--a lot!

I agree, chapter 1, the best part of the book. Some of the book was a bit slow.

ElectricOutcast (electicoutcast) | 647 comments Just left a more formal review of this volume, I think it's my best review yet because of how I managed to be vague about moments that happen in the book: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

TinaNoir | 106 comments I admit I laughed at one point when Eve says to Webster that he only met Darcia "a few months ago." In my head I am like, 'Naw, he met her in 2011 when Treachery in Death came out!" LOL.

Actually, this book has more than one call back to Treachery, most notably Jenkinson's prolific use of the F-bombs! Probably why I am enjoying it so much. And I am only halfway through.
