Colored Cities #2Duration: March 1 - May 31, 2023
Object: Read one book for each city.
If using the cover option, please post the cover.
The Cities
1. Blue Ball, Pennsylvania
The name originates from the Blue Ball Hotel, built more than two hundred years ago by John Wallace in Earl Town. He hung a blue ball out front from a post and called it "The Sign of the Blue Ball". Locals soon began calling the town "Blue Ball" after the inn. In 1833, Earl Town officially changed its name to Blue Ball. During Prohibition, the inn changed its name to Blue Ball Hotel.
🔵 Read a book with a blue cover OR with an inn or hotel important to the story OR set more than two hundred years ago.
2. Gray, Georgia
Gray was founded in the 1850s and named for local resident James M. Gray. In 1905, the seat of Jones County was transferred to Gray.
🔘 Read a book with a gray cover OR with a character named James, Gray or Jones OR with 18 or 19 in the publication date.
3. Green Grass, South Dakota
🟢 Read a book with a green cover OR with a Native American character OR whose title is two words beginning with the same letter.
4. Gold Beach, Oregon
The community was originally named Ellensburg in the 1850s, but later took the name Gold Beach after a beach near the mouth of the Rogue River where hundreds of placer mines extracted gold. Mailboats based in Gold Beach have been delivering mail upstream to Agness since 1895, one of only two rural mailboat routes remaining in the U.S.
🔅 Read a book with a gold cover OR set near a river OR with a mail carrier character.
5. Orange, Connecticut
The town is named after William III of England, who was Prince of Orange from birth. The Henry F. Miller house is an international style house (developed in the 1920s and 1930s) at 30 Derby Avenue in Orange, Connecticut on the United States National Register of Historic Places. The house was one of the area's first modern houses and was featured in the New Haven Register as "The House of Tomorrow".
🟠 Read a book with an orange cover OR with a prince in the story OR whose title is an address.
6. Rose Hill, Kansas
Rose Hill, Kansas was named by J.H. Lowery, in 1869. At the time, the government provided incentives for railroad workers and farmers to “Go West, Young Man, Go West” and settle the land. Mr. Lowery built a home about one mile south of the current elementary school where he planted roses, shrubs, and trees.
🌸 Read a book with a rose colored cover OR where someone builds a home OR by an author who uses initials.
7. Vermilion, Ohio
Vermilion was initially settled in the early 19th century and incorporated as a village in 1837. The city took its name from the nearby Vermilion River. It developed as a fishing and small-boat harbor. In 1847, the Congress of the United States built the Vermilion Lighthouse to aid navigation on Lake Erie. As commerce grew in larger nearby cities, the Vermilion River proved inadequate to large commercial traffic. Later, recreational boating became very popular. During the early 20th century, the area became known as a resort community, featuring many beaches and cottages. Most structures were eventually converted to year-round use; many still are used as summer homes or vacation houses.
🔴 Read a book with a red cover OR set in a resort community OR where a character has a boat.
8. Silver Plume, Colorado
Silver Plume is a former silver mining camp along Clear Creek in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Clifford Griffin became the manager of the 7:30, and was much loved by his miners for his kindness. Every evening he would sit near the edge of a nearby cliff and play his violin. Due to the incredible acoustics of the valley, the entire town could step outside and listen to his concerts.
🔘 Read a book with a silver cover OR where a character is much loved OR with a number (of any kind) in the title.
🏳️9. White Plains, New York
To early traders it was known as "the White Plains", either from the white balsam which was said to have covered it, or from the heavy mist that local tradition suggests hovered over the swamplands near the Bronx River. Following World War II, White Plains' downtown area developed into what amounted to a "destination" shopping district featuring branch stores of many famous New York-based department and specialty stores. Some of these retail locations were the first large-scale suburban stores built in the United States and ushered in the eventual post-war building boom.

Finished 4/3
10. Yellow Pine, Idaho
Yellow Pine was a small settlement that was established just after the Thunder Mountain gold rush. It was a simple stopping place for miners on their way to and from the gold fields. It was originally called Yellow Pine Basin.
Henry Abstein, the first patentee in the area, homesteaded 160 acres (0.65 km2) north and east of the present townsite. Although his primary interest was mining, he was also an active horticulturist and many of the apple trees that he planted are still living today.

The Vibrant Years by Sonali Dev 03.29.238.
