This year during the spring and fall semester, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) will be honoring the 75th anniversary of military integration through the passage of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 and President Harry S. Truman signing of Executive Order 9981.

The Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 [Pub.L. 80-625, 62 Stat. 356] signed into law the authorization for women to permanently serve in all branches of the United States Armed Forces’ officer and enlisted ranks. To learn about this history, the month of March, Military and Veteran Service’s MAVRC Book Club will be reading “A Defense Weapon Known to Be of Value”: Servicewomen of the Korean War Era by Linda Witt, Judith Bellafaire, Britta Granrud, and Mary Jo Binker (University Press of New England, 2005).
