~Ostara~
{19, female, Avani}

Ostara smiled as her mother put down a plate in front of her. Mashed Takara, a potato-like root only found in the Avani Empire, topped with Fried Flouderfin. One of her favorites. She dug in as her mother spewed bullshit about Ostara abandoning the family and going against the Avani culture. Ostara did her best to tune her mother out. Her brother, Otoyo, was failing to hide his laughter. Mom's speech was so irrational it was circling around and around. An insecure way of saying don't leave me here after all I've done for you. Finally she shut up and the meal continued peacefully.
Ostara was to leave in the morning. Otoyo planned to escort her to the tunnel exits. It would be a long walk, the nearest tunnel to the surface was a bit out of town. It'd be worth ut though, or so Ostara could only hope. She prayed she was making the right choice as she knew her parents likely wouldn't welcome her back quite as warmly.
Ostara cleaned the living space for the last time. She used cold water for dishes, which reminded her of the first tunnel she had ever helped burrow. It was supposed to be used to allow easier connection with the above ground world, but now was used for water collection. The burrowing path led straight into a pond, soaking all the workers with cold water.

With a sigh she settled onto her thin mattress. Ostara wasn't sure if she was feeling sad or excited. Maybe scared. Either way she had a very hard time sleeping, and she found herself waking up even more than usual. With a sigh she gets up to prepare a traditional breakfast for her and her brother.

((Sorry about typos and such, I'm currently using a phone and it's not going well :)))

First Person POV

My brother woke up to pan bread and seedling. He was ecstatic. As much as I wish I could be sad about leaving home, I'm not. It's only him I'll miss. After a quiet breakfast, we gather our travel packs and leave.
The walking is excruciating. My legs already burn and we're only to the city center. I get to pass by all my childhood favorite shops. Miss Kawan's bakery, the toy shop, and of course The Curious Library. Miss Kawan waves to us as we pass by. Otoyo called out to her a good morning. I'll probably miss her most.
The main exit is huge. Broken light rays shine in our eyes. It's bright as hell. A sweet smell hits my nose, something I recognize as grass. Otoyo hugs me tightly and tells me he loves me and will miss me desperately. I smile back at him and wink. He knows what I'm saying. I take a deep breath and continue out the tunnel. It's terrible, my eyes burn and I feel like I can't breathe. I push on.

Ostara wakes up in a small clearing. While she did use the main Avani entrance, it was still intended to be taken by vehicle. The nearest city, Chrysos, was still a while out. At least it's the fifth day (Friday), so she could speak. If she sees anyone. She woke up early enough the light wasn't too bad yet. Thank gods.
She rose and stumbled along an uneven pathway. She pulled some dried fruit-like tubers out of her bag. They weren't fresh, so they ended up being a bit too tough. Whatever.
Hours pass and she's still walking. The sun is starting to get unbearable and Ostara quickens her pace. Finally, she reaches what she thinks is the town. Brightly colored tents line the concrete a bit to the east. She stumbles towards them.
