K. Karl | 2 comments The novel is based on my time in Africa. In 1977, I was recruited by a representative of Nelson Mandela's African National Congress to go to Swaziland, get a job, buy a car, and smuggle munitions into South Africa. I chose a novel format, rather than memoir, because I love writing fiction. I had two main reasons for writing this book. First, the novel reminds people of the insidious ugliness of apartheid. Second, it tells the tale of a young person grappling with the realities of trying to help improve the world out of a sense of social justice. I hope it can inspire young people to do the same, though I would recommend the Peace Corps over gunrunning.

My book is available on the Read Now section of Netgalley, if you’re interested in reviewing it.

These quotes from paid reviews may help entice you to do a review:

“The fact that the novel is based on the author’s own experiences supporting the ANC in the 1970s and 1980s makes the story worth reading; there are also brief but effective scenes of suspense scattered liberally throughout”—Kirkus Reviews

"The dialogue and characterization both are sharp, and Karl’s smooth, unfussy prose keeps the story flowing smoothly as he illuminates a fresh milieu, avoiding the stereotypes or ginned-up suspense that often compromise stories of white Americans in Africa. Lovers of romance and spy novels with a real-world edge will enjoy this story, which is as light in its telling as it is weighty in its concerns."—BookLife
