Sophia was clearly in denial. She wanted to be in what she considered to be a safe relationship with someone who she would not get too attached to or love too much, so it would not be as devastating if she lost them. She underestimated both her feelings for Dave and his for her.
I always believed that Sophia loving Decker was a safe place for her to hide to recover from her trauma and reconcile her past. Decker had made it very well known he had no feelings for Sophia. I think it was time for Sophia to move on with her life and Dave was "safe". I don't think she wanted to fall in love with him.
That’s a great point, Anita, about Decker being a safe place for Sophia to hover…a relationship that was doomed from the start. To Lauren’s point, Sophia just assumed Dave was a rebound and her heart wasn’t as committed as it was with Decker. I loved how she and Dave came together.
I was completely in the Decker/Sophia camp (don’t even remember this outcome!) but completely jumped into the Dave/Sophia camp. Their love story is beautiful.

I always wanted Sophia/Decker too. I wanted them to have an HEA after their awful first meeting. I wanted that to be about more than a blow job. Decker was so eaten up with guilt about not realizing Sophia was in real danger and about how he treated her. I wanted these two to have honest conversations instead of avoiding each other.
Well, they got that honest conversation, while much too late, and it was excellent. They both walked away whole.
I gave up on Sophia and Decker a few books back when I realized he was never going to get over his guilt and it became obvious that there was more between Dave and Sophia than friendship.
