What did you guys think about this book?

It is not a bad book but it lacked many things, I never empathized with any character, the narration was not my style and many things did not make sense; I gave it 2 stars. Nevertheless, it was a good plot twist.

I agree with Shubham that a parts of this book didn't make a lot of sense. However, i was still riveted to it until the end. It captivated my attention and propelled me to the surprising end. I started to read his next book, The Maidens ,but quit partway through because it just wasn't as interesting.

way to hyped up especially since i guessed the plot twist 👁👄👁

I loved this book. It was the first and best thriller I've read and the plot twist was so unexpected that I sat and stared at my walls for a long time after finishing the book.

I read that book a few months ago. I was incredibly surprised by the plot twist at the end. I really loved this one.

It was OK. Really enjoy mystery/thriller books but found this to be a little depressing. No one in a good spot.

after it came out that Theo's wife (fiance, girlfriend? idk I forgot) cheated I felt like I knew what happend. I guessed the ending -_-
but I still found it really entertaining. I would probably rate it a 3.5

" This book was a little bit dissapointing for me, having in mind how popular it was. I couldn't relate to any of characters, and i've read it during one evening. It was OK, but i have read much better thrillers"

Probably one of the best books I have ever read- the plot twist was insane (maybe its just me but I didn't see it coming) and after finishing the book I literally want to read it again just to see things from a different perspective after knowing the plot twist if that makes sense

I found the writing style to be very descriptive and captivating. Initially, I liked Theo and felt sorry for him, but my feelings changed as I grew to dislike him while feeling more sympathy for Alicia. Overall, I think the story had a fair ending.

I really liked the book. It was such a great pace and very straight to the point; not that much unnecessary fillers. However, I have to admit that the plot twist did not wow me. It was more like "Ohhh, this makes so much sense now." But overall, a pretty good read.

It suffered from a mix of first-novel and written-for-filming syndromes for me. Short chapters, over dramatised moments, it didn't read brilliantly to me. Saying that, i found that by the end the character motivations were excellently thought out and the plot twists were immaculate. I don't think books need to have a definite Ending, the uncertainly was fine with me.

I loved the plot twist. I thought it was going to be Max that killed Gabriel out of jealousy. I even ended up finishing the book in one day because I needed to know what was going to happen. Totally unexpected. I really enjoyed it!

LOVED!! An awesome thriller that was a quick and easy read. I was expecting to be wary with this book, expected to think it was slow and maybe a bit boring but I fell in love and flew through it in one day.

I absolutely loved this book. I did not see the twist coming until it was there.

SPOILER'S AHEAD!!!!!!
Very good book. I thought that the plot twist was crazy and I definitely wouldn't have guessed that Theo's wife cheating had anything to do with how Gabriel died!!! I thought it was very cool that the author linked Alicia's story to a Shakespeare play! The book was gripping from the beginning, I liked that the chapters were short but always ended off with suspense. The only problem I had was the ending. I wish it wasn't so broad. I know this was done so that you can use you're imagination, but I would rather know what will end up happening to the characters. But that's okay and there's nothing I would change about the book!! Definitely had fun reading and as soon as I was done a forced my mom to read it too lol!!

Everyone was recommending this book to me and telling me how it kept them guessing - so I went into this blind and read it in one seating. It kind of felt like the quality of the plot (the writing was fairly decent) kind of declined as you went on - though there were moments that I genuinely enjoyed seeing piece together. But I feel as if a great many books of this genre enjoy their plot-twists so much that they are painfully predictable. Like I figured it out and was just waiting for the book to finally reveal itself. Not to say that books that allow for the reader to figure it out before them are bad - it's just that the way this plot twist is presented.

I personally loved this book and have recommended it to several people, the plot twist that came at the end was completely out of left field !

This book made me feel like I wasted my time tbh. I felt like the entirety of what I read was rendered useless due to the plot twist. It seemed like the author was trying to make something work that just so blatantly could not.

one of the first thriller books i have read and i LOVED it , the full circule moment at the end i did not see the twist coming at all. 5 start still after few years 5 stars

I liked the way the twists were executed more than the actual twists themselves. I don't understand all of the hate on this book! I loved the slow buildup with all of Theo's analyses on Alicia. Possibly my favorite part of the book. I think what really sold me though was the symbolism in the painting, and how clever that whole plotline was.

Pretty good read for those who are just starting to read books but apart from a couple of good twists it felt pretty average. Not worth calling it a thriller imo.

I thought the book was really good - I liked seeing from both perspectives from Theo and of Alicia. The only complaint that I have is that it ended way too abruptly. It felt like book ended in the middle of a conversation (which it literally did). I just wanted maybe a little bit more. Overall, really good

This is one of my first reads under this genre and I liked it very much! I really Iiked the pacing and the plot twist - I had to put down the book for a while to process what I had just read. It's quite different compared to other books I've read where you could see character development (although maybe that's just something common with books under this genre? I'm not so sure haha)

I loved this book. In the beginning, I thought it was a bit silly, but then it kept getting more and more exciting. I know a lot of people figured out the plot twist, but I didn’t, it really took me by surprise.

I read this book sometime last year at a time that I was only just getting back into the reading habit. I found myself curious to find out why Alicia wasn't speaking but I did have a slight prediction about the end. Overall, I did think that it was a good read with twists and turns and would like to see what a possible second book might entail.

I enjoyed reading this book. It did drag a bit but I kept on reading. The twist at the end though made it worth reading.

this was the first thriller i ever read and i LOVE IT. the twist rocked me to my core. will i ever read it again now that i've read probably 100+ thrillers, probably not because i dont want the magic/memory spoiled. but this book will always be a 5 star for me

It was ok.

The book was a fantasy created out of a single person mind with no research. It lacked consistency and loose threads on so many levels. It felt like the twist and turns of plots were added just for the sake of adding them

I enjoyed the book, but I began to suspect that a major plot twist was coming halfway through. I thought that it might be Teo who was mentally unstable and being treated in the hospital, rather than Alicia. :D
and all these investigated was in his head. so I was expecting an ending like this. (view spoiler)

This book is what started my book reading journey and it was really good ! Like I had to tell my mama about the plot along the way good.

I loved this book! The narration, the plot, the twists and the ending. The characters are so interesting. One of the best books ive ever read.

This book was slow paced, and I had so much run-around I couldn't even remember the previous pages. It took me about a month to finish. It's a pretty justified twist, but I'm not sure. I'm not into it.

I enjoyed the book, but personally I think this book was slow paced. The characters were interesting, and the plot twist was fine too! I'm not sure about his psychiatric practices; I feel there's something not quite right. But I think it's not a big deal, so everything still makes sense.

Yes, maybe this book is a bit similar to a classic Agatha Christie mystery but Christie would've represented the characters far better way. I didn't like this novel because it was slow-paced but because I felt like Alex Michaelides was more concerned with the ending, the twists and turns than the rest of the details in the novel. I won't deny the fact that it perfectly fits into the genre but there were several loose threads. Michaelides failed to portray Theo as a psychotherapist, the Grove only had female patients and most importantly Alicia's traumatic experiences were never acknowledged seriously.

Very very average for a thriller book. I felt it was very slow starting and took a long time to pull the story out. The twist was somewhat exciting but waited over 250 pages for the twist and then the story ended very abruptly.

Not sure it's as good as it's been hyped up to be!

I was getting frustrated with this book until the twist in the end. I knew that something was up and was trying to figure out who had really killed her husband after ruling the obvious suspect out. It was a pretty hard to believe concept, but I really enjoyed it overall.

I liked it, read it in one sitting. Very gripping but it was a bit predictable, and infuriating.

this book is ordinary. and I don't understand why people like it.

Well, at first I was very excited, but in the end it was a little bit boring.

Read the book when i was just getting back into reading, i loved it back then

Just finished and I really enjoyed it. The plot twist makes me want to read it again

I listened to this as an audiobook and absolutely loved it! It pulled me in right away and while I did anticipate the plot twist a bit towards the end, it was still a nice surprise when all was fully revealed.

I didn't really enjoy this book as I saw the plot twist coming from a mile away. Starting to dislike books about mental institutions, as they can be extremely repetitive but this one had a little bit of a flair.

While it's a bit messy, all anyone wants is an ending that leaves you shocked and like wtf. This was that book. Hot take but it was my all time fav of 2023

Ok spoiler by the reels and videos of this book. But seriously the plot twist it had was mind boggling. And love the character development.
Totally recommend this book to newcomers.

I enjoyed it, but I see how it could be seen as “messy.”

The book was very engaging, and I personally never saw the main twist coming, but I found the motives of some characters a little hard to believe
