The Albuquerque Police Department has an asset that they have been unaware of so far: forensic photographer Rita Todacheene sees the ghosts of murder victims. Rita is a native Navajo and grew up on the reservation with her grandmother. She has always seen spirits but was warned to keep her visions a secret. Rita has lived by that rule but this latest ghost will not leave her alone. After photographing a particularly grisly suicide of a young mother named Erma, Rita is constantly haunted by Erma's spirit insisting that she was murdered. She threatens to never leave Rita a day's peace until she solves the crime. Rita's investigation leads her to a dark and seamy underworld of drug cartels, crooked cops and multiple murders. When she photographs something she should not have seen, Rita herself becomes the hunted.
Rita is a great character and would definitely make for an interesting protagonist in a series. Her backstory takes up at least half of the book and it highlights the path she took to become a gifted photographer. I enjoyed it.
