Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion
Tower Teams X

➜ HOW IT WORKS
Each month, each team needs to read 223 books, and these must include the following minimum number of books in each category:
10 x 100-199
20 x 200-299
30 x 300-399
30 x 400-499
20x 500-599
10x 600+ pages
Note: 223 is the minimum you need to read as a team each month and provided you do that and meet the requirements of those page counts above you are eligible to win.
➜ IMPORTANT RULES
- Books must be />100 pages. For page number questions, please check with your captain who can ask in the Captains group for verification.
- Audiobooks are allowed. For page numbers, use the "default" GR book page numbers. If the "default" is a Large Print version, use the next most popular edition for page numbers. If there is no print / ebook, then the audio book must be longer than 3 hours, and page numbers will be set at 100 pages, no matter how long the audio is
- Books with MPGs Childrens / Kids / Poetry / Play / Graphic Novel / Illustrated / Photography / Art (or which have "Illustrated" in the title or an "Illustrator" contributor in the metadata) must have at least 30,000 words. (Must be a verified count, sites that provide estimated word counts are not valid sources for verifying word count). ArBookFind is a great site to double check (there are also .co.uk and .com.au versions). If in doubt, ask your captain. A good rule of thumb is that if the audio is over 3 hours, the book will be long enough.
- "Re-reads" will be allowed, if it has been six months since you have read the book. This includes listening to the audio version, if you've already read the book.
- Anything with the word "boxed set" in the title on Goodreads can not be used as "one book". They need to be shelved as separate books to count for this challenge.
- Any book in any language will count, as long as it meets the criteria.
FULL RULES HERE (or here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...)

[BOM: + 3 links of answered questions]

I’m super excited for another round of Tower Teams! Nice to see some familiar faces again - and meet the rest of you!
My name is Judy (she/her) and I’ve been all over the place for the past couple of years but for now I’m back home in Germany (and living with my parents… not ideal but oh well! At least we have two mega cute cats!), with a fresh master’s degree under my belt and ready to finally get back to pre-grad school reading levels… and what better time to do that than TT!
I’ve been playing TT since the Harry Potter edition and have been captain or co-captain for TT and wheels a bunch of times. Have you played TT before? Any other team challenges?
What’s your favorite book you’ve read so far in 2023? Mine is… good question actually, but The Chosen was definitely a standout!
One bit of initial housekeeping: Please share the name of your shelf for TT so we can double-check we’ve got the right one!

My taste in books is a bit all over the place and I will read almost anything for points for TT lol (except for high fantasy, already mentioned that in the BOM thread for the... Wyld book, sorry. I hope lots of you will join though ;)). Another big influence on my reading is booksandlala on youtube in case anybody else is enjoying some booktube :)
I'm currently traveling so won't be around as much as I'd like especially in this early stage of ttx, but we'll make it work. Judy has already linked everything you need to know up top and I'm sure there'll always be someone around in case anybody got some more questions :)
Looking forward to meeting some new people and playing with familiar faces too!
(will link my shelf once I'm back home in a couple of days - it should be called z-ttx I think but I'm not sure right now if I've set it up already oops)

I try to take part of Team Towers every year and have been around for awhile, twice as captain, a few times as co-captain, and other times as a member. It's definitely my favorite team related challenge as it gets super competitive and the mods keep it interesting. Always flies by!
I read a variety of genres by mood - Urban fantasy, Paranormal, Cozy Mysteries, Psychological Thrillers, Horror, Occult Detective, Hard-Boiled/Noir Mysteries, Middle-Age Adventure and Fantasy, select YA Mysteries/thrillers, Romance of all kinds. I also dabble in Non-fiction depending on subject and memoir. I read a lot on my collection of e-ink kindles, but also enjoy audiobooks and books.
I tend to binge read and am a big series fan. Been a member of Kindle Unlimited for years, started using multi-cards with Libby a lot the past year, and also a member of Audible Premium Plus for streaming. Besides already owned TBR piles over the years, I definitely never run out of things to read and my "TBR Pile" is ridiculously huge. I'll never run out of books....or catch up!
I have a 21 year old son who is celebrating his 22nd birthday only days after TT begins this year, my parents live across the street and we're all close. I have three furbabies: Malz, an older tabby cat who I have had since he was a small kitten - he stayed frisky and is sleeps with me every night; Oscar, a grey and white 2 year old who is hyper, loves forced hugs and cuddles, and plays with toys often and even plays fetch with balls; Raven, a small boned calico who loves to watch TV.
I like chatty teams and checking in often - I am also HUGE In pre-planning but never get all done that i plan to. I enjoy spreadsheet challenges like this. It's all part of the fun, though :)

I live in a suburb of Philadelphia with my husband and his cat. My daughter got engaged several months ago so we are planning a wedding for December 2023.🥰 During the day I'm a part-time CPA/tax accountant at a national accounting firm so I’m coming off of my busy season.
I prefer a real book to an e-book but about 4 years ago I started listening to audiobooks when my work commute changed, and I love them as well and that has increased my reading. I am a big library user and actually served on the Board of Directors of a local library where I grew up for 25 years and am currently on the Board of Directors of the local library where I live now, of course I am the treasurer!
I'll read almost anything if I have to for the team, but my favorites are Historical Fiction, Fiction, Mystery and Thriller. I'm not a fan of SciFi but I do like Fantasy.
My favorite book so far this year has been The House of Eve.
My TTX shelf is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I am in the US (Texas). I rarely can post during the work day, but will definitely read posts daily. My shelf is tt10 .
The genres I prefer are cozy mysteries, UF and romance. I rarely read books over 500 pages, so hopefully others are into the chunky books.

My shelf is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
I have a few five star reads for this year but most are sports romance books. The only one that isn't, that I think most people will like is Nine Liars. I love this series.

I'm also curious how some of the spreadsheet goals work and how that will count with the rainbow colors.

I'm Beatrice and I live in Italy. It's my first time taking part in Tower Teams and I'm super excited for it! Lovely to get to know all of you :)
I'm a big mood reader and like a bit of everything, but mostly I've been gravitating towards fantasy, cozy mysteries and historical fiction. I started commuting again recently so audiobooks have been a big help, though I still prefer physical books.
My TT shelf is https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I read a lot of different genres, depending on my mood. Lately I've been enjoying cozy mystery, thriller, historical, and contemporary. My favorite book so far this year is probably The Sound of Light.

I've also got multiple library cards in Libby, I'm sharing a couple with friends who live in different cities 😅 we'll also have a planning spreadsheet ready to go soon :)
I really love the back-to-basics towers challenge too, I've only ever played the themed ones! (which were super cool, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it's nice when things are a little simpler ;) )

Thanks for checking in!! Hope you're enjoying your cruise :)

Hi Diane! Thanks for giving an update how often you'll be around. And I'm sure we've got people who read bigger books too, it's cool that we can really use the smaller ones in this challenge format!

Nice to meet you Anna! I gather you're really into sports 👀 that's kind of my whole thing (besides reading) and it always feels like there aren't many of us who like both out here 😅

Nice to meet you! Tower Teams is so fun even if it sometimes seems a little overwhelming (especially at the start) - just shout if you have any questions! (And I'm actually going to Italy over the weekend hehe!)

I'm Natasha (she/they) and I'm from New Jersey, USA. I'm a librarian who works at two different libraries and I'm also a part time nature photographer.
I love science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction (1800s and earlier), history, science, physics, medical history, and literary criticism.
This is my 4th time doing Tower Teams. I think my favorite book I've read so far in 2023 is Felix Ever After.
My Tower Teams shelf is: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I'm Robin(she/her) and live in Tennessee-- just south of the Nashville area--USA. I'm 25 and been holding the last 26 years--wishful thinking😂 I have two grown sons ages 32 and 29, 2 grandsons ages 5 and 4, 2 step granddaughters ages 8 and 14. I have no furbabies of my own--😭 I lost one in 2020 and the the other one in 2022. I have one 7 mo. old grand-furbaby named Freya(American Bully Pit) Currently I'm unemployed and live with my elderly mother and TRY to help take care of her.
I've been a member of GR for 10+ years and participated in lots of groups/challenges. I remember when TTs was first created and I participated the first couple of years. RL got kind of crazy--I had to stop participating in groups/challenges for several years-- I just couldn't keep up with everything. I've been active again the last couple years.
I read across all genres--historical fiction, cozy mysteries, mysteries, classics, general fiction, YA, juvenile fiction,LGBTQ and graphic novels being my favorites. Romance,PN, fantasy, horror, and sci-fi being my least favorites but I will read them. Non-fiction is my least read genre but I do like the memoirs, biographies, and auto biographies if they are written like fiction. I will also dabble in other NF categories of interest.
I'm a mood reader so generally have 5-10+ books on the go at all times. Although I have a TBR of 300+ owned books, I tend to overlook them and go to the library a couple of times of week instead. I prefer physical and audiobooks over ebooks. I have multi library cards but I mainly use my local library and the Nashville library. I still use Overdrive because I detest the Libby app.
I am a challenge addict. When I started participating again, I SWORE that I wouldn't overload myself with them. But guess what? I didn't listen. It can get time consuming updating them. I've never been a captain/co-captain in a team challenge although I was willing to try it this time--I didn't make the cut 🤷♀
On average, I read 2-4 books per day. I don't watch tv and pretty much always have an audiobook playing at 2-3X normal speed LOL I'm also a speed reader. I don't really care for big/chunky books but will read them or anything else needed for a team challenge.
I intended on checking in yesterday but got sidetracked with reading/tracking my last few books for UNO--imagine that. I'm sure that hasn't ever happened to any of you, right? lol I see a few familiar faces from other groups/challenges and happy to be in a group with you. I also look forward to meeting, reading and playing with those of you I don't know as well.
I'm super excited as I see one of my all time favorite GR friends on this team--🤗 to Erin "Proud Book Hoarder"
I will probably be checking in multiple times per day. Besides reading, I spend a lot of time here on GR.
Now that I've bored you all to tears, I will close by saying it's nice to meet you all and I look forward to reading, chatting and playing with all of you!! I hope you all are reading lots of great books!! Remember to throw a little self care in there as well. You deserve it!!

We are all going to have an absolute blast. Little doubt about it before, but now it's really official :)

I'm Melanie and I live in New Jersey, USA with my husband and our 2 cats including the very handsome orange boy that is my profile picture. I work in finance and thankfully have been WFH since 2020 so I have time to pop on here pretty frequently throughout the day.
I am primarily a romance reader (historical, contemporary, suspense, paranormal) but I also read a lot of mystery/thriller books with the occasional urban fantasy or sci-fi. I also read comics/graphic novels and manga but those won't be useful for this challenge. As to what I don't read, I do not like literary fiction or high/epic fantasy with very limited exceptions but otherwise there aren't really any genres I actively avoid. (One exception to my high/epic fantasy dislike is actually the May BOM Kings of the Wyld which I highly recommend.)
I'm a pretty quick reader, I can read about 100-150 words per hour. I normally only read 1 book at a time (and finish most books in 1 sitting), but I've been trying out reading multiple books at once this year (currently in the middle of 9! books at the moment). Not too sure how much I like it, but I told myself I'd give it until at least halfway through the year before I decide if I'll continue to read this way.
Here is my TT shelf for the challenge.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
I'm looking forward to the challenge starting with you all. Now I just need to finish up the books I have on the go already before May 1st gets here.

I also work from home mainly since 2020, which I love and can't imagine changing again.

I love sports! I grew up in Alabama and have been a Crimson Tide fan since diapers. Went to my first game as an infant and graduated from University of Alabama with both bachelor's and master's. I love the Atlanta Braves and it's currently fun to watch them. I like college football better than NFL but I did watch some Eagles last year. Winter is time to catch up on reading for me but I do watch some sports then too.
Hi everyone! Looks like we are going to have a diverse and fun team. I also am a speed reader and can listen to audiobooks on 3x speed for the most part. That's how I get those chunky ones done a little easier.

Hi Melanie!! It's nice to meet you🙂 I have a "start-itis" issue. I can never decide which of the 100 library books I want to start first. Before I know it, I have 9, 10, 11 of them started and none finished. But I love having more than one on the go as I'm a mood reader!

Oh no!! Not a Crimson Tide lover🤪 My step-dad/brothers and all his family are from Alabama and Crimson fans. My family is from West Virginia/Ohio so we are Buckeye fans and when the need arises, Tennessee fans!
I know we are in other groups together and have seen each other in passing, but it's exciting to FINALLY be on a team together!!!
YAY!! Another speed reader/listener!

UMMMM don't speak to soon🤣 We may get on your nerves and drive you to grabbing that bottle of wine🍾🍷
Naw!!! I think we all are going to have lots of fun and work well together!! Lots of diversity in what we read as team!!
Years ago when I first started listening to audiobooks, I couldn't listen to anything faster than the normal speed. But now that I've gotten used to listening, I can't listen any slower than 2-3X lol.

It's nice to meet you all😁
I look forward to having fun, chatting and reading with all of you!

Hi Natasha - good to see you again! :) I loved Felix Ever After, too (and was actually really surprised by how much I enjoyed it)!

Nice to meet you Robin!!! Very impressed by how many books you read at the same time... I usually feel like I'm on the high end with 3-5 😅

Hi Melanie! :) good to hear an endorsement for Kings of the Wyld - I've been debating whether I should read it for years and decided to take the plunge for the bonus points here... I like high/epic fantasy but it doesn't really sound like my vibe

Yep! Here's the links & I'll also throw it up in the pinned posts: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
It might still change a little (and if you have suggestions I'm always happy to listen) but for now this is what we're going with. I've input a book that I hope I'll read asap as an example.

Oh yeah same!!! I started out tentatively going to 1.25x and was like wow that's already pretty fast... by now I'll lose my mind if it's slower than 2.0x! It depends on the type of book (and narrator) how fast I can go though

."
Don't worry, I can't dance either, although I seem to think I can if I get tipsy lol

Great, thank you!

@Erin - I am somewhat picky on narrators as well. If start listening and can't get into the narrator voice or accent, I'll have to stop. Some books also have too many characters with odd names, and I can tell from the beginning it's not going to be a good audiobook for me. The highest speed I usually use 1.2 because like you, I lose focus.
