Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments April 1 - 7 is the week to observe the golden rule. It's good to do it all the time, but this week brings special emphasis to it.

The challenge for April is to real a book with the root word gold or root word Rule is in the title or author's name. That's it. Pretty simple right?

General Rules:

1. The book may be in any format - paperback, ebook, audiobook.
2. The book may be combined with the Year Long Challenge and the Group Themed Read.
3. The book must be started and read between April 1 -April 30, 2023 (based on your local time zone).
4. The challenge is for one book. You may read more books if you chose but you may only report one.
5. The book must be 175 pages or more determined by the issue you read.

In the case of ebooks & audiobooks, use the hardcover or paperback edition to determine page length. From the book page, select “all editions”, then select the first paper edition as your guide. If reading an ebook and there is no paper edition, the ebook book must be at least 250 pages. If reading an audiobook and there is no paper edition, your book must be a minimum of 6 hours long.

Scoring:

Title:

5 pts - if the title contains both "gold" or "rule", including embedded or modified.
4 pts - if the title contains "gold" or "rule" as is without it embedded or modified.

Author:
5 pts - if the author's name is either "gold" or "rule" as is without it embedded or modified.
4 pts - if the author is male and deceased.

Genre:
5 pts - non-fiction
4 pts - historical fiction
3 pts - mystery

Pages:
1 pt - 200-299
2 pts - 300 - 399
3 pts - 400 - 499
4 pts - 500 - 599

Bonus Points (3 pts each)

◾ April Fool's day - Set in April
◾ Alcohol Awareness Month - Alcohol beverage on the cover
◾ Fiddler's Frolic - Title has two words that start with the same letter, doesn't have to be F, but take an extra point if it is.

Margo | 11674 comments Hmm, maybe not so simple but challenging 😉

The only book I have on my shelf that fits is Rules for Perfect Murders which I've meaning to get to for a while.

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments I think I will read Witches Steeped in Gold and get it off my tbr.

Sharon Hopper | 2439 comments I think I will read Everything She Ever Wanted by Ann Rule. Very challenging but great gophering fun. I wanted to find a book I already owned.

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 2316 comments I have The Golden Couple earmarked for an April Challenge so it will fit perfectly here

Kristie | 19334 comments That was a really good book, Marie. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I've found a few that will work. I'm not sure what I'm going with yet. I might read The Off Limits Rule or True Fiction by Lee Goldberg. I think this is first time that I'm happy the search function on my TBR includes words that are imbedded in the author's name. lol

message 7: by Nistha (new)

Nistha | 1009 comments I also have The Golden Couple in my TBR! Also considering Memoirs of a Geisha or The House with the Golden Door

message 8: by Fiona (new)

Fiona | 1166 comments I think I'm gonna read Three Swedish Mountain Men by Lily Gold

message 9: by Grainne (new)

Grainne Coughlan | 1368 comments I am deciding between The Golden Spoon or Golden Poppies The first one is a new release while the second one has good reviews so maybe I'll try both.

Emma, subtitles don't usually count and I didn't see anything in the rules that states they're being allowed this time. Janice will have the final say, but I just wanted to point it out before you get your heart set on your book.

It's been an established rule with all our challenges over a number of years, so we'll send you back to your gophering Emma.

Emma R. | 197 comments That definitely shows I should not do my gophering while at work. I totally knew that was a rule, but it slipped my brain. Sorry!

Janice (jamasc) | 60095 comments I started my selection yesterday, and within an hour, I'd decided I'd had enough. So now I'm back to the drawing board to find another book, except I don't have anything that fits.

message 16: by Jane Reads (new)

Jane Reads | 297 comments I'm reading Trojan Gold for this challenge. It will also be my book for Puzzle 6, Task 4 - book set in Germany.

message 17: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I have The Lady in Gold: The Extraordinary Tale of Gustav Klimt's Masterpiece, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer on my tbr. I think I bought it once in a Kindle sale. I'm going to give it a try.

Atleast this way we know, you aren't making it any easier for yourself. It's fair for all, lol.
