I can think of some CYOA (and similar) books that do this, and there are quite a few sleuths who operate on the wrong side of the law much of the time. Or maybe look at some true crime or other nonfiction. I'm thinking about reading Hit List.

Amy (amyml88) | 113 comments I read The Burglar Who Counted the Spoons. I haven't read a Bernie book in ages. As usual, he acts as detective as much as he burgles. Fun series, and this was a quick read.

Cheryl (6of8) | 197 comments Okay, I am going to be legalistic about this, but I am a lawyer, so that is probably authorized.

I read Bloodsworth by Tim Junkin which discusses the case of the first death row inmate exonerated by DNA evidence. He was innocent of the crime he was accused of and convicted of and imprisoned for, which means that he truly was not a criminal because he was not guilty but legally he was a convicted criminal. Excellent book in terms of making the investigation and the legal and scientific aspects quite readable.

Jacqie | 93 comments I finished the Tide Child trilogy by R.J. Barker. I'll specifically note The Bone Ship's Wake, the last in the trilogy, because we've definitely got pirates in that one. If you love epic fantasy at all, if you like nautical adventures with pirates, sea serpents, magic, war, this is a great series for you.

I've really enjoyed that series! I was caught up at one point, but I don't think I've read that one.

All I managed for July was The Stardust Thief. I enjoyed it, but I think listening to the audiobook while driving didn't do me any favors for understanding everything, so I might re-read it if I come across a print copy.

Cheryl (6of8) | 197 comments I started Dodger by Terry Pratchett which definitely fit the theme, but I got side tracked by a quilting project and didn't get it finished in July. Still, I definitely recommend if you are looking for an enjoyable read that's a little out of the ordinary. This is not from Discworld but is instead an adventure in Dickensian London (literally Dickensian, as Dickens is one of the main characters).

There are a few more he's released in the last few years, but not too many. You can probably get caught right back up pretty quickly!
