I'm slowly getting into this one, started it while on a road trip and now that I'm home, I'm still having trouble finding time to read more than a few pages at a time. But soon...

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments Yes!

Helen I tried starting a couple of nights ago, realised I'd no idea what I'd read so will leave it til the weekend when I may be more conscious!

Helen I'm once again at the 'what is going on' stage ;)

Just try to push on through. I find, as a first-time reader of this series, that it is better to not worry too much about catching everything or understanding everything. I just keep reading and find that many questions get answered (though not all, and not completely) and it's a great story whether I catch every little thing or not.

One thing that makes this a tough book/series to read is that the usual sense of "good guys" and "bad guys" is not present most of the time for most of the characters. I find I'm "pulling for" characters on all sides of the various conflicts, or nearly all sides.

Maggie K | 298 comments I do really hate mallick Ral though. Hate

Helen Oooh, I recognise the name at least.

David Hedges | 71 comments I'm a bit behind here! I've just finished Gardens of the Moon, and, eventually, really enjoyed it. Is Deadhouse Gates the next in the series? If so, I shall get it and read it :)

No worries about being a bit behind. Feel free to comment in the Gardens of the Moon threads--I love to know what you liked about it.

Helen I know what you mean about eventually enjoying it. Book two is different.

David Hedges | 71 comments Finally started it! And like someone else here am at the "what on earth is going on?" stage. Still, I was like that with Gardens of the Moon too for at least a third of it and ended up loving it. I think I have a slight disappointment that so few of the characters from Gardens of the Moon are present in this one after it took so long to get my head around them all, and there's a feeling of "Oh no, loads of new characters to sort out!" Still, I'm confident that I'll get to like this one too...

Helen I'm at that stage on book three. I preferred book 2 to 1 after thinking along the same lines as you.

Yay! I hope you will comment as you go along, David. And yes, Erikson seems to have a habit of starting books with new characters, new settings, new situations, but over time, they come together. And until they do, it's still pretty compelling writing.

I do refer to the cast of characters and maps in the front and the appendices in the back all the time as I'm reading. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not.

Helen me too!

Daniel (dward526) packed away, but as soon as I unpack I am itching to get this one started.

Helen We'll be here.

Justine (justine_ao) | 636 comments As always! :)
