I did enjoy this book, but I felt that it went into a lot more detail about certain areas than I would have wanted, for example when talking about boats, and this detracted from the story that developed around Kabuo and Hatsue. A large part of the story focuses on Kabuo when he is on trial for murdering a fellow fisherman. It is clear that history plays a large role, and that the dispute goes back to when Kabuo and other Japanese Americans were interned in camps during WW2. The book jumped around in time quite a lot, which did make it hard to follow what was going on at times, and the trial seemed to go on for too long before much actually happened.

I read this a long time ago but remember liking it but thinking it was a slow mover though it suited it. I had to laugh at your comment about the trial go on for too long before anything happened -- that's alas very true of real life trials!
I loved the atmosphere of this book. Yes, I realized it jumped around to provide the backstory. I gave it five stars.

I rather enjoyed the way the author handled the courtroom drama - instead of a standard Q&A, it provides flashbacks which I thought gave me what the testimony would have been, without all the detailed courtroom procedures that can get repetitive.

I seem to have been reading quite a lot of slow-paced books recently, maybe it's time for me to read a couple of thrillers.
