How can there be a "page count" on an e-book?

Amazon includes page counts for the majority of the Kindle editions on their sites. Because page counts can vary due to the device being used, the Goodreads policy is to use Amazon for Kindle editions.

Ebooks are digital versions not sold on Amazon but through publishers and other vendors (i.e. Kobo). The Goodreads policy is to use the publisher's website for ebooks.
