Theresa | 16076 comments Ah, the very beautiful scintillating, extremely wealthy, but not so bright Rosemary is poisoned by cyanide in her champagne at her birthday celebration in one of London's most fashionable restaurants. The packet with the remainder of the poison was in her evening purse. That coupled with evidence of depression after a serious bout of flu brought in a finding of suicide. Six months later, anonymous letters suggest it was murder. And so, the widower takes steps to unmask the murderer, and Christie provides us with yet another very cleverly constructed whodunit. I was merrily led down the garden path, absolutely convinced from practically page 1 as to who it was...but doubts crept in, yet I clung to my conviction. Alas, I was totally wrong! Fortunatley for all, Colonel Race (this is the 4th and last of her mysteries in which he features) and inspector Kemp with the help of another character find the proper villain. Brava, Dame Agatha for once again pulling the wool over my eyes!

While reading this I discovered that it was the expansion of short story Christie published circa 1935 for Poirot called The Yellow Iris. I found a free copy online and read it. Charming as it was, it makes a much better full length mystery with no Poirot or Miss Marple needed.
