2020 In Literature discussion

More than anything, I enjoyed Yang's explanation of the origin of his idea at the end. The development of the Asian American superhero was a topic I knew nothing about before now.

However, I tried handing it to my 13 year old who usually likes action, adventures AND graphic novels, and it did not appeal.... What did you think?

I have to agree with your teen's assessment. The story seems to be a lot more cultural/historical than superhero-based. I liked it, especially since it includes an Asian superhero, but it didn't have the excitement of a standard graphic novel.

I loved it but I love pretty much anything by Gene Luen Yang. I hope teens that are into classic comics will pick it up.

So far of the Hub list, this is my favorite of the graphic novels. A story that follows a logical storyline yet, entertaining too.

I worked in a MS last year and The Shadow Hero was checked out all year and I had holds for it.

Shadow Hero is my favorite Yang book so far. I have trouble getting students to check-out American Born Chinese and only 1 student checked out Boxers this past year, but I think I can sell this book. It has all the right aspects, superhero, criminals and family. I too enjoyed the end credits.
