Read 10 books that fit your favorite 20-point tasks from prior seasons. You must state the season and the task (number and brief description) when posting your book claim.

List tasks will work as the list is now. If the task required prior approval, posting a link in the Completed Tasks thread when you claim the book will be sufficient. Older seasons especially may have links to outside sources that no longer work. Please post an updated link for these tasks or ask in the Help thread.

Scoring

20.1-20.10: 20 points

Bonuses (one only):

50 points: 10 tasks, your choice (can double up on a task)
75 points: All one task
75 points: 10 different tasks (could read more than one from a season)
100 points: 10 tasks from 10 different seasons

Please post any questions or comments about the 20- point challenge in this thread.

Elizabeth (Alaska) To make it easier to review prior seasons, the Old Task Overview posts have been collected in this folder:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

If you need/want to look at the old Help threads, they are in the Archives folder. These are more or less in reverse order by season, but not in task number order within a season.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Reminder: You'll need to post the season as well as the task number and brief description.

The challenge does not require you to use tasks 20.1 through 20.10 to get ten different tasks or ten tasks from ten different seasons.

message 5: by Bea (new)

Bea So I am looking at doing 20.4 from different seasons. In 2016 summer, it required a setting of China, Russia or Australia. I am considering a book set in Hong Kong. In 2016, this setting was part of China. Can I use it?

Yes, we will accept Hong Kong as China.

Oh, thank you. That means I have found 10 books for 20.4 from different seasons! Now to read them.

I can't find an equivalent Wikipedia list - you may use this list instead:

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

And the NY Times list is still available:

Joanne (joabroda1) | 597 comments Could you please approve this author as having worked as a journalist (for Fall 2016, Task 20.6 John Buchan). The book is
Little Pink House: A True Story of Defiance and Courage by Jeff Benedict -it is mentioned on the MP under his name

Apple | 1019 comments With Summer 2012 20.4 Literature Map task : Go to Literature Map and type in an author whose work you read this spring (March, April, May). Read a book by another author who comes up on the literature map. While you can repeat this task as many times as you like, you must continue to use the first literature map that you created. Additionally, you must select a different author to read each time you repeat this task. State the author you used to create your Literature Map when claiming points. Can I use the one author, or should I chose different authors, as per the original post? And, if I can use one author, then can it include the originating author?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Apple wrote: "Can I use the one author, or should I chose different authors, as per the original post? And, if I can use one author, then can it include the originating author?"

You will use the map for only one author. You will then use a different author from that same map/author for any repeats. Yes, you can use the original author for one of your reads.

LOL - did I understand your question?

message 17: by Apple (new)

Apple | 1019 comments Yes, since I am doing that one task for a plan, I will use a different author for each of the 10 posts, so I will need to post the originating author for each task. Which is fine, because it looks like all the people I had chosen using one author are going to crossover anyway, I just need to change the source ;) Thanks!

message 18: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited May 19, 2023 03:18PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) You need to use the same source for all of your reads. Just one author's literature map. Maybe I didn't say it very well.

Deedee | 2305 comments I have a question about

Summer 2015
20.10 - Books in Books - Liz M's Task:
Read a book that was mentioned in a novel you read for the Spring or Summer 2015 challenges. The reference must be specific enough to apply to a single title. This task cannot be used for combo points .

It specifies a novel read for the Spring or Summer 2015 challenges. Which challenge quarter would be used for Summer 2023? Thanks

Elizabeth (Alaska) Deedee wrote: "It specifies a novel read for the Spring or Summer 2015 challenges. Which challenge quarter would be used for Summer 2023? Thanks"

You may use Winter or Spring 2023. (I didn't remember that Liz used that current challenge, but we'll give you two challenges that you already have books in the bank, so to speak.)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Anika wrote: "So…say i complete the megafinish and want to do the 20 point tasks again—can i choose a new set of old tasks? (i may have found FAR more than ten that caught my fancy…)"

There is no megafinish. You can repeat any of the challenges as many times as you wish. And yes, you can repeat old 20-pointers from previous rounds without compromising earlier finisher bonuses.

Duh me….I knew there was no megafinish, just slipped my mind when I was trying to figure out how to explain my question…
I think I’m still not asking right,
But I think I’m answering my own question as I try to ask it more clearly…
I think what was throwing me off is I was envisioning it more like a classic sub-challenge, where once all ten books are completed you basically wipe the slate clean and start over within the framework of the sub-challenge…I was hoping that on the completion of the my ten 20-point books, I could wipe them out to choose ten different previous-season tasks….but, duh, even though it *feels* like a sub-challenge since we have so much freedom to construct the challenge, it wouldn’t be the case. Once we choose our ten former-season tasks and a read a book to fulfill them, they’re then essentially set in stone.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Anika wrote: "Once we choose our ten former-season tasks and a read a book to fulfill them, they’re then essentially set in stone."

No, your thinking was right to start with.

You'll read for the 20-pointers and claim which ever finishers bonus applies.

Your slate is now clean. You can choose the same 20 pointers or all new ones or some new and some previously read for. Repeating one you've read in a previous round won't affect the appropriate finisher bonus for either round.

Example:

Round 1: Read for this season's 20.6 and tasks from 9 other seasons. Get the 100 point finisher bonus

Round 2: Same scenario.

Basically, summer is an opportunity to read to your heart's content, though we've established some parameters.

Yay!!!! Thank you for clarifying!! Oh, I’m so excited…I found, like, 30 old tasks I wanted to revisit and hated having to decide which I had to edit out :-D now I can read ‘em all!!! You just made my whole summer <3

Rebekah (bekalynn) I want to do task 10.10 group reads, which is in every season. Do I need to give a season and read one of the group reads selections from that season, or can I pick a group reads book from any season?

Never mind. I now see only 20 pt tasks from the past qualify.

Yes. An opportunity to get to something on your list ...

Elizabeth (Alaska) You should start numbering your task claims with 20.1 and continuing 20.2, 20.3, etc.. It doesn't matter what the original task number was.

Apple | 1019 comments I am planning on doing Winter 2020/21 20.5 Africa

In honor of Chinua Achebe, read one of the top 225 books from the list Africa (fiction and nonfiction).

Out of Africa is #13 on the referenced list https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/8...

but I am wondering if Out of Africa / Shadows on the Grass will be okay to use?

(Knitting a blanket, and I can get this as an audiobook, which will let me keep knitting ;) )

You can actually read (listen to) any edition you wish for your own records. The combination title includes the list title. Please list only Out of Africa for your claim.

Joanna (walker) | 2320 comments What ruling on the length of this book that does not appear to have a print edition:

The Grift of the Magi by Ally Carter

Amazon claims the print length is 119 pages and describes this as a novella: https://www.amazon.com/Grift-Magi-Hei...

Elizabeth (Alaska) Joanna wrote: "What ruling on the length of this book that does not appear to have a print edition:

With all digital editions, we have to accept the default. It shows 105 pages. Long enough to be used, short enough if you needed it for a novella task.

message 42: by Ann (new)

Ann (lit_chick_77) | 551 comments Here’s a letter/spirit question. Could both of these tasks be claimed?

Fall 2017
20.7 Single Word (Lagullande's task)
Read a book with a title consisting of a single word. All words count for this task.

Winter 10/11
20.3 – Shortest Day/Month of the Year
Winter contains the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, as well as February, the shortest month of the year. Read a book with a short title...so short that it only consists of one word. For this task, no subtitles are allowed.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yes. I assume you wish to earn the 10 different season bonus. As these come from different seasons, you could use both of them. I’m sure there are other tasks that were duplicated in our 13+ years.

Rosemary | 4435 comments I would like to use La Celestina by Fernando de Rojas
for the Summer 18 task:
"20.4 The Piano Teacher - Both The Piano Teacher and The Piano Teacher are debut novels. Read an author's debut novel."

Information at this link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernand...

As he wrote it when still a student and isn't known to have written anything else, will that work?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yes.

message 46: by Rosemary (last edited Jun 29, 2023 07:48AM) (new)

Rosemary | 4435 comments Thank you - but I have the book form the library now, and it is set out like a play. It's been called the first European novel, but I see on closer reading of the Wikipedia article that there is some discussion about whether it is a novel or a drama, and I think I will find a different task for it, where it fits more confidently. There are plenty to choose from!

Rebekah (bekalynn) In planning round 2, I planned on using the SU 2013 season task #20.10.
SU 2013 - 20.10 World Series
Read a novel set primarily (more than half) in one of the cities which has won a world series World Series Champions locations
World Series Champions (non-Excel link)

Since that season, Houston has won a couple of World Series Championships, so would it be alright to read a book based in Houston for this task?
