This is my second book for this category as my mother is no longer around to ask her favorite. I chose the other from my memory of her loving Agatha Christie, and this one because I chose to ask my mother in-law what her favorite was. She gave me two choices, This book, and Gone with the Wind. But, since this one is one I had not read, I chose this.
As expected with a classic, and, one that was written over 200 years ago, you get very expressive language, and quite a trip through imagery, and commentary. Defoe was making quite the statement with this book, and from also reading some of the scholarly papers surrounding this book, I can see why it has lasted for years.
I can also tell why my mother in law enjoyed it.
It is, however, not a quick read. It is one that I found I needed to read, take time to absorb the text, and then come back to later. I also took the time to read commentary around each part I read from different sources so that I could better understand, and appreciate the message being given.
I do not think I would have chose this book to read had my mother in-law pointed it out. Its basic plot is not what I normally read, but it is a worthy tome, and I would recommend it for the category of over 100 years old book.
