Borrowed from the library between ~2015-2018 and seemed new at the time.. began with a woman meeting a man at the post office and bicycling home, seemed like it was set in the countryside in the UK. Didn’t get a chance to finish before I returned it & the NYPL doesn’t keep records of physical check outs.

I think that this is a strange guess, but maybe Tamar by Mal Peet? It's a bit of a wild guess, but the book includes what you were talking about, but it doesn't start with the encounter at the post office. Hope this helps!
