Lsophia | 162 comments There's a Trixie Belden book that starts that way. It's The Mystery of the Emeralds by Kathryn Kenny. It was published in 1965, so it would have been around in the 1970s.

(She also cheats and leaves herself a note because she always forgets).

Lsophia's suggestion of The Mystery of the Emeralds by Kathryn Kenny looks very promising.

Quote from the book:
- Chapter 1: "Rabbit! Rabbit!"
Trixie Belden awoke slowly, with the sound of a summer rain beating against her window. She half-opened her eyes, stretched her arms above her head, and then, catching sight of a large sign tied to the foot of her bed, yelled out, "Rabbit! Rabbit!"
... "Well, ever since I was Bobby's age I've been trying to remember to say 'Rabbit! Rabbit!' and make a wish just before going to sleep on the last night of the month. If you say it again in the morning, before you've said another word, your wish comes true."

"Don't be silly, Rachel, this is the first of July. Which reminds me — you can do Rabbit, Rabbit. Then you'll have good luck all month."

Rabbit, Rabbit is a game — well, not exactly a game, more like a superstitious thing you do on the first of every month. My Aunt Kate taught it to me when I was very little and I taught it to Rachel. In the morning, on the first, you have to get out of bed at the end, turn around to the right three times, and say "Rabbit, Rabbit" with each turn. Then you're supposed to have good luck for the whole month. Actually, I can't remember ever having had good luck for any full month. I had forgotten to do it myself that morning but now that I remembered it, I couldn't see why Rachel shouldn't have an opportunity for good luck . . . the little dear.

Unfortunately, I didn't see any other likely candidates. There is Words of Stone, but the 1992 publication date is far too late.

"In a way, he compared it to Nova’s practice of saying 'Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit' for good luck on the first day of each month. It had to be her first words spoken or else it didn’t work. Nova was far from superstitious, and yet, if she forgot to say it, she seemed annoyed with herself all morning."

Closing thread until you unprivate your profile, which we have already asked you to do once. Private profiles are too much work to moderate. We can't see all the threads you've started.
