Booknblues | 12211 comments When I was a kid we had a marshy swamp that we used to cross at times to get to the creek and cross it to the woods on the other side. To go around the swamp was much longer and we usually chose the quick way, jumping from hassock to hassock and hopping not to fall in and get all muddy and slimy with the possibility of losing a shoe. Overall, we didn't view the swamp as a pleasant place and that feeling has remained with me until recently.

Recently, I have been about the positive environmental impacts of wetlands. They are home to so much flora and fauna. They are helpful in this time of climate change as they sequester carbon.

Annie Proulx has written an interesting book on the subject Fen, Bog and Swamp: A Short History of Peatland Destruction and Its Role in the Climate Crisis and I was excited to read it.

She does go off in some interesting tangents which I was happy to read about. I also was glad to be informed about the impacts of draining the wetlands and restoration projects.

There were parts of the book which bogged down a little for me and at times I felt a bit swamped, but all in all I did not sink in the mire.

😁😆

Great review. I might pick this one up too. And the Beaverland books you mentioned. My husband will end up reading this book, even though it will be like preaching to the choir.

Going along with a theme in my review, it is never bad for the choir to be well versed.

Holly R W | 3160 comments Fran, your review triggered some nice memories for me. My dad used to love the outdoors. Every Sunday growing up, my family would go to woods and marshes. A few years back, my dad (in his 90's) reminisced, with a smile: "I can't count how many times I would fish one of you (kids) out of a marsh when you fell in!"

Also. there is a huge wetlands area about two hours away from me. It's near Lake Erie. My husband and I like to go birding there. It's full of wildlife and magical. ;0)

Theresa | 15750 comments I am adding this to my TBR - had noticed it in passing but after just reading Where the Crawdads Sing, it appeals to me - to read more about this topic. Growing up not far from BnB, there were definitely wetlands, bogs and such around, usually where many small streams fed into a pond or creek. Not a lot and not big and we all tended to keep away and respect them -- probably warned by my dad. Once or twice he plowed or mowed hay too close to one and ended up with the tractor stuck.

BnB - you are triggering these days many farm memories from my youth!

I seem to have fallen into a wetland rabbit hole after reading Beaverland: How One Weird Rodent Made America and of course, I am always up for anything farm related.

I need to get hold of a copy of Where the Crawdads Sing. I tried it in audio and just couldn't do it.

She talked about a couple of wetlands in Indiana as well as one in Ohio.

There is! I'm really interested in their impact on the environment and restoration at the moment.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8458 comments This reminds me that Hubby and I need to visit the Horicon Marsh in the fall to witness the great migration!

I've loved the books I've read by Annie Proulx. My father also instilled a love of the outdoors in us. We frequently camped on our summer vacations ... and we didn't have a tent! Of course, in our area of Texas we had more scrubland than marsh ...
